Mark Domingo served for the US military in Afghanistan
A US Army veteran who converted to Islam and discussed launching various terror attacks throughout Southern California has been arrested for plotting to bomb a rally organised by Nazi sympathisers as retribution for the New Zealand mosque attacks.
Key points:
- Mark Domingo as a trained soldier who intended to inflict maximum damage, authorities said
- He had suggested attacks on Jews, police officers, churches, a military facility, and Southern California freeways
- The FBI said it was the kind of case that 'keeps us up at night'
Mark Domingo, an infantryman who served a combat stint in Afghanistan, was arrested on Friday after visiting a park in Long Beach where, authorities said, he planned to plant home-made explosive devices made with nail-filled pressure cookers in advance of the rally on Sunday.
Mr Domingo, 26, was arrested on a charge of providing material support to terrorists.
A criminal complaint said he had been planning since March to "manufacture and use a weapon of mass destruction in order to commit mass murder".
US Attorney Nick Hanna told a news conference that Mr Domingo supported violent jihad, and that he spoke about becoming a martyr and pledging allegiance to the Islamic State group if it established a presence in the United States.
