Hydrogen is idiotic and has been idiotic since I was a youth. Some drawbacks are they are not allowed to use closed parking garages and the tanks are empty in the morning because the hydrogen evaporates. Maybe possible for buses which drive a predetermined mileage evey day and arrive mostly empty at the depot for the night. Complete garbage for private cars. They were mostly abandoned 40 years ago because of lack of a sensible tank solution and the situation has not changed. It can be stored as a gas but the capacity is abysmal. More can be stored in liquid form but that's extremely cold and as I mentioned it evaporates over night and poses a major hazard in closed spaces.

That it comes up now again is just a detractor from electric battery solutions.

Doesn't matter if they burn or crash, few cars here and a couple dead there; that's how the first generation works, though tech advances in our own lifetime are good enough assurance that much better is on the way.

Otto doesn't drink, isn't reckless, won't speeds, is not prone to road rage or other emotional outage, and mile for mile under variable conditions if he is not safer than the average human driver he soon will be.

The argument of the Tesla short sellers changes with the time of day. One says they can't deliver, which was true for a while. Next day it is now that they have worked off their backlog they can no longer sell what they produce and point to reduced deliveries in the US once they got over the backlog. While in reality they started selling to Europe.

Their share price has dropped somewhat. I think the share value of Tesla being higher than Daimler was somewhat exaggerated. They will get there but they need time to grow. You don't go from boutique seller of high end fan articles to mass producer in a year or two.

California now has the 5th largest economy in the world. If you take away trucks and SUV's the Tesla model 3 is the 3rd best selling car in the state, second half of 2018. Powerful news and a big change over the internal combustion engine.

I don't think it's supposed to be a running timeline for the video. It is just a From>To time and date (From 16.14:28 on 26-01-2019 to 20.29:51 on 21-04-2019). Could it perhaps be the file name?

So actually Elon Musk said they will have the software for autonomous driving really finished and loaded into their cars by end of next year. But then they need approval of the authorities which will take a while. Drivers will be able to use it but need to keep their hands on the wheel.

I wonder how the method of Tesla to improve on their software on a daily basis will affect the certification.

BTW I have a friend who actually bought a Tesla model 3 two weeks ago. He is extremely happy with the car. It exceeded even his high expectations. More importantly his wife who was quite unhappy about the purchase is now completely happy with it too.

He bought the version with the lowest engine power available. It takes a full 4.7 seconds from 0 to 100km/s. There are sports cars on the street which can beat that.

The self driving software already handles driving on the highway end to end very well. He tried it. Not yet driving in the City.

His problem is that all the big manufacturers are getting into the electric business and they can probably produce much cheaper once they ramp up mass production.

Probably why he's getting into the Tesla Roadster.

It was always his goal that all manufacturers go electric. He has a major head start with electric cars. The other manufacturers are just finding out that you can not build an electric car by taking out the engine and tank and replace them with batteries and an electric motor.

I have spoken with Musk. We are setting up a final certification site in Bangkok Asoke area.

Software developers are having problems detecting and avoiding collisions with motosi taxis, kids selling flowers, soi dogs and folks offering window cleaning services. Preliminary test results show a 50% chance of colliding with these street denisens.

Will take years to perfect the SW. Until then Tesla will market the squashing of a few street obstacles as a free value add option.

There is an article on that batteryfire that started this thread on Teslarati. SpaceX have determined a reason for the fire and have issued a software update to all Teslas with a similar battery setup. They claim it will eliminate this risk and also increase battery life.

They don't say that the changes would make charging somewhat slower but I guess that will be the case.

Why not? Not exactly but almost. Who has got experience with e.g. electric forklifts, electric bikes, even with electric lawn mower, can see how simple it's built and how simple can be handled with.

When imagined the combustion engine, quite complicated nowadays, hence not so cheap. That's all replaced with a simple electric motor and some kind of electronic control.

Yes, then the batteries, but that's not problem. The problem is the hegemony of the car industry and their prices.

For easy comparison one should look on the electric bike - I had driven it every day for a time period, twice daily 5 km, sometimes more. The motor is incorporated direct in the wheel, no gear, no chain, quite a small battery - could be much larger. Anyway, so easy to drive and not to care for the gasoline filling (mostly overdone with the engine oil addition), not to car for the dirt in the carburettor, gear, chain and many others.

Here in Thailand, there are zillions of motorcycles, up-country mostly the shitty Hondas, Yamaha, 100ccm, all for 60 - 80,000 B, what cost so much for the 5 - 10 km daily drive? The electric ones for less than half would do better, but there is no promotion and Thai people do not do otherwise than the neighbour.

The results of the joint investigation showed that the pre-facelift Model S did not have any system detects. Instead, initial findings pointed to a single battery module as the cause of the blaze, which was caught in a parking lot surveillance camera.

In order to avoid similar incidents from happening, Tesla has revised the charge and thermal management settings on Model S and Model X units, which feature the same systems as the ill-fated vehicle from Shanghai. The Silicon Valley-based company noted that the fix, which was rolled out through an over-the-air update, would help protect the vehicles’ batteries while improving longevity.

    https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-fixe...ssue-shanghai/

Tesla says single battery module caused car fire in Shanghai, has changed vehicle settings

(Reuters) - Electric vehicle (EV) maker Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) said on Friday a single battery module caused a car to catch fire in Shanghai and it had revised its vehicle settings to further protect its batteries following an investigation into the incident.

The company said in a statement posted on its Weibo social media account that the joint investigation team had conducted an investigation and analysis of the battery, software, manufacturing data and vehicle history.

The investigation found no system defect, and the initial findings show the incident was caused by a single battery module located at the front of the vehicle, Tesla said.

Japanese battery manufacturer Panasonic (6752.T) supplies Tesla with battery cells, but not modules, which are a group of cells joined together.

The company has revised the charge and thermal management settings on Model S and Model X vehicles via an over-the-air (OTA) software update, to help further protect the battery and improve battery longevity, the statement said.

A parked Tesla Model S caught fire in Shanghai on April 21.

Tesla has said its EVs are about 10 times less likely to experience a fire than petrol-powered cars.

Tesla's local competitor Nio Inc (NIO.N) said on Weibo on Thursday that some battery modules in its cars might have safety issues as well, and that it would recall 4,803 units after three fire incidents in China.

Safety of electric vehicles is a growing issue in China, the world's largest new energy vehicle (NEV) market, where 1.3 million NEVs were sold last year.

China's industry ministry asked carmakers this month to carry out safety investigations on waterproof protection, high-voltage harnesses, in-vehicle charging devices, and battery boxes in their cars.

Elon Musk explains why Tesla’s Cybertruck windows smashed during presentation
(see the video in the link)

Softening things up with a sledgehammer beforehand didn’t help

The unveiling of Tesla’s Cybertruck last week was full of surprises, but none more shocking than the moment when lead designer Franz von Holzhausen smashed two of the vehicle’s “armor glass” windows onstage with a metal ball. It certainly wasn’t the result CEO Elon Musk was expecting, who could be heard muttering “oh my fucking god” under his breath before being forced to complete his presentation in front of the fractured panes.

But Musk says he knows what went wrong, and explained things on Twitter. Right before the metal ball test, von Holzhausen smacked the door with a sledgehammer on stage to prove its durability (and unlike the glass, it was fine), and Musk says this impact “cracked base of glass,” which is why the windows subsequently smashed when hit by the ball.

This seems plausible, especially as Musk also shared a slow motion video of von Holzhausen performing the same exact test before the event, with the ball bouncing harmlessly off the window. The combined impacts likely weakened the glass, setting the stage for the eventual smash. (Though why the back window broke as well isn’t clear: the passenger door didn’t get whomped by the sledgehammer.)

Yup. Sledgehammer impact on door cracked base of glass, which is why steel ball didn’t bounce off. Should have done steel ball on window, *then* sledgehammer the door. Next time …

At any rate, the smashed glass was just one moment in an event which gave viewers plenty to talk about without the on-stage mishaps. The divisive design and impressive specs of the Cybertruck have caught the world’s attention, and since the unveiling Musk has been drip-feeding bits of information on Twitter to keep people engaged.

Solar panels on the roof that charge the car as it drives? We’re doing it, says Musk. A new matte black finish? “Sure,” he says. The Tesla CEO even suggested a second, “smaller” version of the Cybertruck would make sense in the “long term.”

We’ll have to wait and see how many of these promises become a reality (remember: Musk has been predicting Teslas will have “full self driving” capability for years) but there’s certainly a lot of interest in the Cybertruck. As of Monday morning, Musk said the company had received more than 200,000 preorders for the vehicle, “with no advertising & no paid endorsement.” All it took was a few smashed windows instead.
