Small comfort but it's better than knowing more than one loser did it.

The shooter was disarmed by a courageous congregant at the 2nd mosque. The shooter then fled and was eventually caught by police. Had this brave young man not pounced, there would have been many more dead.

The psychopath was a fitness freak, so the Lynwood pouncer did well and was lucky.

He apparently was originally targeting a Mosque in Dunedin (where he'd been living) but switched his attention to ChCh for some reason.

When I first heard of this it was through a friend last night online. Shooter inside a mosque was the first thing I heard. I immediately assumed US white supremacist/Trumpanzee. I was shocked as hell to find out this happened in the land of the Shire.

I think a lot of people are in shock that it has happened in NZ, not for wank-bauble reasons that have already been bleated in this thread by the usual suspects though. It's definitely going to have some pretty far-reaching consequences but not those the gunman intended.

I honestly think it's much worse when things are just reported as general populace will just not care about another news and another massacre in some corner of the world. People absolutely need to see this shit. I remember the day when I made a decision to leave Yugoslavia. It was when I saw body parts everywhere on 8 o'clock news reporting a bomb attack. Completely uncensored. Until then I didn't even believe there was a war in my country.

I watched it and I really don't know why and really, really wish I hadn't.

"There were five guns used by the primary perpetrator," she said at a news conference in Wellington. "There were two semi-automatic weapons and two shotguns. The offender was in possession of a gun license. I'm advised this was acquired in November of 2017. A lever-action firearm was also found."

She said the suspect, identified as Brenton Tarrant, obtained a gun license in November 2017 and began purchasing guns legally in December 2017.

"While work is being done as to the chain of events that lead to both the holding of this gun license and the possession of these weapons, I can tell you one thing right now. Our gun laws will change." Ardern said.

It's not their business, but it is definitely in their interest. Australia's baning of guns has always been a sore point to the NRA because it's so compellingly obvious that gun control worked. If NZ does similar, there's another argument against the NRA's idiocy.
Mind you, NZ's history is so tame, complete gun control won't reap significant changes, even over a long time. Aramoana (14 dead in a mass shooting in 1990) is the only other mass shooting I can think of in NZ.
I saw a statistic today: this one massacre resulted in more deaths than deaths from all the murders in an average year. Put's another perspective on the import of this tragedy for Kiwis.

I just hope NZ's legal system is geared up to do proper justice. The will will be there, but maybe not the statutes. He'll possibly be out before he's 70, but they should throw away the key. I look forward to hearing how fellow maximum security inmates treat him.

Just because something horrific is there does not mean we have to expose ourselves to it. The sick fkk who carried out the attack is a product of the malaise which has infected our social media. We should be fundamentally re-assessing how these platforms are used or mis-used.

Yes, the details of organizations etc may vary, but in all cases they are based on the hatred of a different group. In some cases the basis is skin colour, in others religion, in others tribal affiliation.
