So Muslims peaceably doing their own thing are slaughtered by a racist white guy, another racist white guy blames Muslims.

You have said some brainless and nasty shit in your time Booners but that might just take the cake.

This tragedy ain't the first, won't be the last and the right wing perpetrators are no better than the islamists who have carried out similar atrocities - its heartening however to see TD come together with one voice and condemn this act and not get into the usual shitfest of one-upmanship

oh dear, we better now prepare ourselves for an onslaught, nay, a veritable tsunami of virtue signalling, hypocritical, patronising, mawkish, pretentious, high minded rhetoric as politicians and high horse riding civic and religious leaders worldwide rub onions into their eyes and announce via televised sound bites their "deeply felt" meaningless commiserations with the victims, their families and the population of new zealand in their day of horror.

That's from the NZ PM, taxi. And very well said too.

You can go share and express your sympathies for the perpetrator on the DH thread version. It's appropriate.

since when has a politician ever felt sympathy for anything.

    New Zealand mosque shooting:

Extremists saw nation as ‘a target‑rich environment’

    bernard lagan, sydney

Before today’s terrorist attack in New Zealand, the minister for climate change getting a black eye from a man in a park was enough to shock New Zealanders.

Yesterday’s assault on the minister, James Shaw, as he walked through public gardens to his office in parliament in Wellington, was seen as an extremist attack by New Zealanders, who have long believed themselves to be of little interest to the world’s extremists.

That view changed today when at least 49 people were killed in attacks on two mosques during Friday prayers. One of the assaults was streamed live on social media.

This assault was planned by far-right extremists, apparently in response to immigration over the past 15 years.

In a grim manifesto posted online, Brenton Tarrant, a 28-year-old white Australian, said that the massacres were “to show the invaders that our lands will never be their lands, our homelands are our own”.

He explained why he chose Christchurch: New Zealand was just too easy. Mr Tarrant wrote that although the attack had taken two years to plan, New Zealand was not the original choice. Christchurch was decided on three months ago because New Zealand was “as target-rich an environment as anywhere else in the West”.

Even before the shooting, the alleged gunman posted links to a white extremist manifesto on Twitter and the online forum 8chan. These included a link to what appeared to be his Facebook page, where he suggested that he would broadcast a live video of the attack. The four people arrested over the mosque attacks were not on any watch lists. Social media sites took down the footage but it was still being shared by other users hours later.

Winston Peters, the deputy prime minister, said that New Zealand had lost its innocence.

This was a misplaced innocence. It allowed the country to airily ban American nuclear warships when another Labour prime minister, David Lange came to power in the mid-1980s — a decision that ended its security and intelligence sharing pact with Australia and the United States and deeply aggrieved the UK.

When Margaret Thatcher dispatched Baroness Young to admonish Mr Lange, he called out as she left his office: “You’ve forgotten your broomstick.”

From then on, New Zealand allowed its defence and security to slide. It even mothballed all its jet fighters in 2001 and the airforce is little more than a freight and surveillance service .

There has been a thaw in recent years and New Zealand is a member of West’s “Five Eyes” intelligence network but it spends little on intelligence gathering, defence and security. It likes to portray itself as largely harmless and as cleverly following an independent foreign policy.

New Zealanders convinced themselves long ago that the country they call “Godzone” was somehow immune. No longer.
blinkered left leaning liberal ideology allows extremism to take root, it has happened in the uk, and it has happened in europe, and now your country is sadly and unfortunately getting a taste of it.

I've only been tangentially aware of her to this point as NZ politics bores me to death.

But she handled that one speech well and spoke some truths and under the circumstances spoke well and with comfort for a shocked nation -- I was impressed.

And you're right, night and day comparison to anything Trump has uttered.

.To the question about whether he was a fascist, he says “The nation with the closest political and social values to my own is the People’s Republic of China"

He says that when he was young, he was a communist, then an anarchist and finally, a libertarian before coming to be an ‘eco-fascist’...

Yeah, it was good and NZ is rallying behind her.
I think it would have been better if she had said "perpetrated" rather than "perpetuated", but I'm sure she'll live it down, unlike Trump's multitude of malopropisms and gaffes.

Australian thinks NZ is his homeland...or "our lands?" Where is that coming from? I guess he's referring to "western" nations in general...

I saw somewhere that this maniac hoped this incident would kick off a civil war in the United States. WTF?

edit: pretty sure we won't need his help for that...

That's the kind of genius we're dealing with here: Australian 'immigrant' to NZ shoots immigrants in NZ to 'protest' against immigrants in Europe and the US.

As much as I'd like to villify Trump, it was Cheney and Rumsfeld manipulatiing Village Idiot Bush that really set things rolling.

I'm not Trump fan and I'd sure as fuckery not defend the orange douchebag but in fairness I don't think he did. This sort of shit has been around for a long time -- just look at the history of anti-immigrant 'they're out breeding us!' rhetoric even here on TD, it precedes him by years.

However what he has done is amplified it and given it an acceptable face and a stronger voice. Racists and douchebags are emboldened. One of the gunmen identified him by name as a symbol for the White struggle.

But then I've just typed all that and realised it's semantics anyway... He has injected poison into the world, more of it.

He started it during his campaign. First the Mexicans were rapists, then he wanted to ban muslims because he didn't know "what the hell was going on".

And the baldy orange cunto still doesn't know.

One of the questions about an attack like this is this.....

How often is the shooter(s) taken alive? Are they wanting a show triai so they can have a world stage to expouse their beliefs?
