Those were the words of former Australian Prime Minister John Howard before he radically changed Australia's gun laws and - many believe - rid the country of gun violence on a large scale.

What is there to enlighten? With a little research you’ll find that owning pistols in NZ is possible and they are not illegal. All you need is a B cat endorsement on your firearms license, and you can buy a pistol or revolver. However, it is illegal to possess any firearm without a license. I know plenty of Kiwis that legally own pistols.

The Washington Post is still calling the shooter "Right Wing"

    https://townhall.com/columnists/john...twing-n2543264

But, but, he says the country that most aligns with his values is the PRC? And he calls himself an 'eco-fascist'?

    Yup, definitely 'right wing'

Yup. There's already talks about how to shut him down from using his trial as a pulpit (he's representing himself).

In fact I did do a bit of research before posting and that is why I wrote "Only for a very special reason can a licence be obtained for handguns, and it is rare.". The "illegal" comment was in context of Lulu implying handguns are already pretty much a general thing and not merely "possible". They are not generally found in many households. Look at the rigamarole one has to go through, and that is for sporting pistols only.
If you know plenty of Kiwis that legally own pistols, you have a very select social circle of sports target shooters. I know none. Kiwi 2 degrees and all that

There should be one more headline after a closed trial. "On X date, the mosque murderer was put down."

. I think Davis was referring to Tax, although he'd have better made the comment wrt Tex.

I say let him have his attempt at a pulpit in court. The judge will very soon have him in contempt, and I'm sure some journos covering the trial will be discreet about what they report. Mind you, I'm all for free speech, and I would not ban him from saying what he wants to say... in the proper forum, eg a sopa box in Cathedral Square. Court trial is not a proper forum. Also, if he does try to use the trial as a soap box, I want to read about it; Let the world see what deranged nutters he and his ilk are.

Free speech does not mean people saying whatever they want. I admire your optimism but the unfortunate fact is that many people support the scumbags views and allowing him publicity won't decrease that number. He said his primary influence was Breivik and that lunatics widely disseminated schizophrenic nonsense did nothing to reduce support for him.

I disagree. I think he will suffer for decades inside a Kiwi max prison. He has already had threats from a couple of the toughest gangs that have members inside.
Yes, he's a waste of oxygen, but I'm nasty enough to want to know he's suffering...and at the hands of coloured people.

    its already too late.

his name, his photo and his "manifesto" and indeed the video of his outrage are already out there, in many cases disseminated by those who would wish him shut down.

virtue signalling by politicians, however well intentioned, is meaningless when confronting an incident as nightmarish as this one.

why even put him on trial, given the world wide publicity it will garner.

he did it, he filmed himself doing it. he is guilty of murder, terrorism call it what you will, there is no defense.

put him in front of a judge for 60 seconds, whose only task will be to pronounce sentence and lock him up in solitary until he passes away or hangs himself.

Agree, but he would basically be opining. He's allowed to say (and I want him to be heard saying it), "I like Trump's position on white people" and things like that, especially when juxtaposed with comments such as "Muslims are the invaders".
It can only be good overall to be able to demonise him not just for his murders but for his ideology also. Having him spout it will result in that.
Guy that murdered 50 people holds ideals that are typically white supremacist. Gives white supremacists an even worse name. Basically they've been viewed as dim-witted rednecks who hold sometimes violent rallies and whom Trump thinks are decent people. This could be quite important in people seeing the evil that is white supremacism.

Also, as in this case, an en vogue phrase speakers/writers commonly misuse in their desperation to sound trendy.

No it isn't. You're confusing tenses.

How this is handled will be a template and an example to others considering similar actions that the notoriety they crave will be severely restricted.

Your catch-all 'virtue signalling' hobby horse has nothing to do with it.

Nothing can undo the damage already caused. Trial in closed court, conviction, execution, cremation, ashes flushed down nearest public toilet.

And 99% of people don't care. Always amazed me how upset people get about the puny amount of their individual taxes spent in criminal justice. It would be a lot easier to take if they just admitted they liked the idea of killing criminals instead of pretending it's about the 5 bucks a year taken from their individual incomes.
