Saudi Arabia 'secretly' sells Istanbul consulate where Khashoggi was murdered

Saudi Arabia is trying to quietly sell off its Istanbul consulate, Turkish media reported on Tuesday.

The revelation comes as the first anniversary of the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the consulate approaches.

The Saudi foreign ministry has "secretly and quickly" sold the consulate buildings in central Istanbul, HaberTurk reported.

The consulate's new owners have not been revealed, but the buildings were reportedly sold for around a third of their value.

The sale has also not been publicly confirmed by the kingdom.

Saudi Arabia will soon move its consulate to a new premesis in Istanbul's northern Sariyer district near the US Consulate.

According to Turkish legal experts, the sale of the embassy - still considered a crime scene by the Turkish authorities - will enable its most thorough investigation by officials yet.

The reported sale comes just two weeks ahead of the first anniversary of Khashoggi's killing, which is widely believed to have been ordered by Mohammad bin Salman, the Saudi crown prince and de-facto ruler.

A report by a UN expert released earlier this year placed the blame for the brutal murder squarely on Saudi Arabia, while new recordings released earlier this month by the Turkish press provided yet more evidence that top-level officials had plotted his vicious murder.

The transcript revealed for the first time Khashoggi's last words.

"I have asthma. Please, you'll strangle me", he said before he died.

He did order it - so what?

Khashoggi murder 'happened under my watch,' Saudi crown prince tells PBS

RIYADH (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia’s crown prince said he bears responsibility for the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi last year by Saudi operatives “because it happened under my watch,” according to a PBS documentary to be broadcast next week.

It is the first time that Mohammed bin Salman, the kingdom’s de facto ruler, has publicly indicated personal accountability for the killing inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul by operatives seen as close to him. The CIA and some Western governments have said they believe he ordered it, but Saudi officials say he had no role.

The death sparked a global uproar, tarnishing the crown prince’s image and imperiling ambitious plans to diversify the economy of the world’s top oil exporter and open up cloistered Saudi society. He has not since visited the United States or Europe.

“It happened under my watch. I get all the responsibility, because it happened under my watch,” he told PBS’ Martin Smith, according to a preview of a documentary, “The Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia,” set to air on Oct. 1, ahead of the one-year anniversary of Khashoggi’s death.

Jamal Khashoggi murder: Turkey puts 20 Saudis on trial in absentia

Twenty Saudi nationals have gone on trial in absentia in Turkey for the murder of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018.

Khashoggi, a prominent critic of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was killed by a team of Saudi agents inside the kingdom's consulate in Istanbul.

The defendants include two former aides to the prince, who denies involvement.

Saudi Arabia, which rejected Turkey's extradition request, convicted eight people over the murder last year.

Five were sentenced to death for directly participating in the killing, while three others were handed prison sentences for covering up the crime.

The Saudi trial was dismissed as "the antithesis of justice" by a UN Special Rapporteur Agnes Callamard, who concluded that Khashoggi was "the victim of a deliberate, premeditated execution" for which the Saudi state was responsible.

    What happened at the trial?

Khashoggi's Turkish fiancée, Hatice Cengiz, was one of those who testified at the opening session.

She later told journalists gathered outside the courtroom that she found the process spiritually and psychologically debilitating.

Ms Cengiz expressed confidence in the Turkish judicial system and declared: "Our search for justice will continue in Turkey as well as in everywhere we can."

    Your allegiance is well known.

Your approach to world affairs is that of someone supporting a sports team.

Everything done by your team is OK.

Discussing anything with you is as worthwhile as trying to have a sensible discussion about football with the 'ManYoo!' cadre on here.

Though at least most of them can construct an understandable sentence in English.

    But here goes anyway.

Please read the following slowly and carefully:

Anyone with a working understanding of the English language knows that conceding something happened 'on your watch' is not an admission that you ordered it.

^Not quite understand your post (sorry my poor English)...
Anyway, it's quite comforting that the world can move forward, put it behind us, not to be bothered as it had been e.g. for months long with Skripals' case, not to mention how much the UK taxpayers had to spend their money for...

So, the business can go on without any sanctions, the jobs are very important and the Houthis have not stopped the missile firing...

So, you 'think' (using that term loosely) that an attack that endangered hundreds of thousands of people in mainland Britain should be comparable in importance to one person being murdered in an Embassy in Turkey.

That makes about as much sense as you usually do.

Is it just me or is fairly well every post of his 'whataboutism' and anti-western, while praising those bastions of liberty; China and Russia?

It seems to be...but then I generally lose the will to live about four words into his tortuous sentences, and need to watch a cat video.

Al-Jazeera just airing in-depth story of Jamal Kashoggi's assassination. However, not so exciting - and outrageous for the international community - as the Navalny's intoxication...

    Christ, he's off again...

So the interest in the Salisbury poisonings was much higher than in the Turkish embassy murder, which was front page news for weeks, which is lower than the poisoning of someone probably few people know of because of bias against Russia.

All that matters to you in these incidents was whether or not Russia was implicated.

    Right?

The Kashoggi incident is a blessing for Erdogan; as long as he's whining about it and keeping the oh so easily outraged media distracted, nobody's watching the more serious stuff like his latest proxy war crimes against Armenia.

As ever, he'll push all the way to whichever red line Putin or Macron or some other power draws, and then back off to lick his wounds and plan his next distraction from domestic and economic catastrophe.

Won't be long now, before someone decides enough is enough and he's decked.

    Funny (dis)similarity of two cases:

-with miraculous healing and millions on propaganda, however, wasting billions of investments so much needed to keep Europe warm

-with heinous crime and miraculous disappearance of a body, however, spending/gaining billions on weaponry so much needed for further murdering/destroying
