Anti-Trump populist poised to clinch Mexican presidency

MEXICO CITY — Mexicans on Sunday appear likely to elect a left-wing populist president who has campaigned on standing up to President Donald Trump, potentially ushering in a more confrontational era of U.S.-Mexico relations on everything from immigration policy to trade.

Andrés Manuel López Obrador, a former mayor of Mexico City who styles himself as a champion for rural Mexico, has enjoyed a double-digit lead over the other top candidates from the country’s major parties for months.

His vows to eradicate violence and official corruption — long unaddressed by outgoing Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto’s ruling PRI party — have played a major role in lifting him to the head of the pack. But his pledge to defend Mexicans from Trump, coupled with his nationalistic rhetoric, has also bolstered his standing with Mexican voters.

López Obrador traveled through the U.S. after Trump was elected to advocate for Mexican immigrants living in the states and even published a book called "Oye, Trump" ("Listen Up, Trump") that condemns Trump’s plans to build a border wall and “his attempts to persecute migrant workers.”
Mexico “will never be the piñata of any foreign government,” López Obrador, 64, told more than 90,000 supporters at a rally here to close out his campaign on Wednesday.

I can't help but think if he is able to get rid of violence and corruption that the Mexicans will stay in Mexico instead of trying to illegally sneak into the USA. This I think would make him a good buddy of Trump. I don't see him creating many new markets for perishable vegetables that pour into the USA. I don't think he wants to alienate the farmers who are his base. I see nothing but roses in the American Mexico future.

That's a good point. I think the immigration problem is about criminals coming to the USA not workers.

For sure the US does not need imported criminals, they have enough of their own as testified by the prison population.

Almost seven in every 10 foreign prisoners in US jails are Mexicans, a US government report has revealed.
A report by the US Government Accountability Office also states that between 2005 and 2010, there was a 7% increase in the number of foreign inmates in federal prisons.
Local prisons, have seen a 35% increase in the number of jailed foreigners.
The GAO reports that 68% of the 55,000 foreigners in US prisons are Mexican nationals.

I attempted to educate you about North and South America. "Mexico has 98% more murders than the USA. Murder rate 5 times more than USA. I guess you have never been to Mexico."

I used to live close to there and always carried a gun because of the illegals running around my property at night.

I ran a business and my brother in law had a ranch. I had to make deposits in the bank. I wore a bullet proof vest and carried a shotgun. My brother in law carried a Colt in a holster as he was a cowboy type. I was in South East Asia for two tours in the late 1960's. I carried a gun there too. Not a Rambo type as I didn't much get along with Special forces types because they kept stealing my jeep and I liked subdued insignia and I wore underwear. Maybe a trip to a border town in Mexico would be in order for you so you could update your knowledge of things Mexican. Women are hot tempered and eat spicy food - a bit like Thai women but larger breasts. They seem to put on a lot of weight after childbirth. Did I tell you I'm a disabled vet and my health care is paid for in Thailand? That's the reason I could retire here. Thai hospitals direct bill the VA. Nice system. Saves America money and I think the health care is much better than the VA system in the States or Mexico for those who live in border areas or have retired in Mexico.
