Russian Studies Fellow Arrested in Photo Shop

Sounds like the sane minded people you like to quote....

Vladimir N. Brovkin, a fellow with the Davis Center for Russian Studies, was arrested in a Beacon Hill photo shop on February 13, Brovkin confirmed yesterday.

"He just went berserk," said James Kim, the 29-year-old employee on duty at the time of the incident. "He came in [and was] in a bad mood, and he let everything out on me."

Brovkin, formerly an associate professor of Russian studies, was charged with destruction of property after he became enraged and knocked the cash register and other merchandise to the floor, Kim said. He estimated that there were about $600 in damages.

Kim, who was working alone at the time of the incident, said that Brovkin, who came in with his wife, became very angry when his pictures were not ready and demanded that Kim call the lab and have the negatives returned.

Brovkin confirmed his arrest and said that he has a scheduled court appearance, but denied that he initiated the conflict.

Brovkin, who said that he is a long-time customer of Mr. Foto, said he is accustomed to having pictures returned in one day.

According to Brovkin, he told Kim, "I'm the customer and I'm the boss here, so call the manager and give me my property back."

Kim said he called the lab and when he informed Brovkin that the photos would not be available for three days, Brovkin began yelling at him.

"There was no way I could deal with his anger," Kim said. "He went crazy, he just lost it."

So he had a meltdown and was arrested...he's not wrong here:

When they were in power, the Westernizers, the friends of America, the free marketers, in the early 1990s, they plunged the country into shock therapy: prices skyrocketed, people lost their life savings. Factories closed, salaries were not paid, and starvation and poverty hit the country. Criminal gangs divided up the peoples’ property. A bunch of oligarchs privatized what was built over the Soviet years. Suddenly, there appeared huge corporations with Western participation that began to own Russian natural resources: Russian aluminum, steel, everything. Tens of billions of stolen assets were moved overseas through a myriad of off shore schemes. The Westernizer rulers of Russia proved themselves to be stooges of Western companies, thieves and robbers of natural resources. Elections showed a dozen parties of all kinds including for example the Love beer party. In the provinces, power was usurped by mafia bosses, criminal gangs, who terrorized opponents, killed journalists, turned kindergartens into private mansions, created private armies that disregarded local police. In some places they turned police into auxiliary criminal force.

Oh stop trying to blame the West. As soon as Putin could pull the strings, he turned the country into his personal bank account.

I think it was a John Oliver piece that pointed out that Vlad's collection of high-end watches was on a magnitude of xxxx% more than his stated income and assets.

Russia is free and sovereign and proud and strong, everything one can dream of. One has to be either stupid or blind not to see it.
(I think the first possibility is "highly likely"...)

I read the whole article. Comparing the stability of certain democracies with a virtual totalitarian state like Russia is being selective to prove a certain view. Governments are prone to be unstable in democracies because the people can throw them out. Democracies have journalists that tend to be on both sides of the political spectrum and can report as they choose giving a variety of opinion ditto with TV stations. In Russia there is only Vlads viewpoint if you A: value your life or you wish to keep your job. Or B: dont want to be closed down on some trumped up charge and your TV or newspaper license revoked.
Anti government protests are tightly controlled if allowed at all. Nobody pretends demomcracies are perfect bu how many people would be game to satirise Vlad in Russia on TV the way Trump is satirised in America on TV.
Whilst I would agree that Nato has expanded too close to Russia, The Crimea, Georgia and Ukraine would have gone some way to justifying Nato expansion. Russia economically cannot survive without the west but Vlad needs to keep the population in a xenophobic rhetoric against the west to mask the ills of economic stagnation and poverty.

He doesn't seem to be doing too bad a job for the average Russian actually, although that by no means solely accounts for his stellar and buoyant domestic popularity. Suffice to say, drunken buffoon Yeltsin was not a hard act to follow.

    Russia Real Wage Growth 1998-2018

Real wages in Russia increased 9.7 percent year-on-year in February of 2018, easing from an upwardly revised 11.3 percent gain in the previous month and beating market expectations of a 6.0 percent rise. Average nominal wages advanced 12.1 percent to RUB 39,800 while annual inflation rate was steady at 2.2 percent, the lowest level since the series began in 1991. Meantime, real disposable income rose 4.4 percent after a flat reading in January. Wage Growth in Russia averaged 5.74 percent from 1998 until 2018, reaching an all time high of 27.20 percent in December of 2001 and a record low of -41.40 percent in January of 1999.

Percentages are decieving. Avg salary of 52k rubs ($900) is hardly something to crow about. Avg Thai wage is $500 per month so Russians are a bit better off.
