Southern California is ablaze - again

Ferocious wildfires rage across Southern California as new fire breaks out in Los Angeles

Ferocious wildfires continued to rage across Southern California on Wednesday, destroying hundreds of homes and forcing thousands of
residents to flee as forecasters and officials warned that dangerous fires could endanger the region for days.

The wave of fires that broke out early this week spread quickly and mercilessly, with the largest blaze expanding across a region almost
as big as the city of Orlando.

Emergency responders hurried to evacuate residents, protect homes and shut down roads across the region, even as authorities warned
that the biggest fire was “still out of control” early Wednesday and keeping crews from entering the area.

This largest fire, known as the Thomas Fire, erupted in Ventura County northwest of downtown Los Angeles.
The Thomas Fire tore across 65,000 acres by Wednesday morning, and the blaze destroyed hundreds of homes, threatened 12,000 structures
and forced 27,000 people to evacuate, officials said.

Most of those who fled were left wondering whether their residences were among those destroyed.

Apparently Rupert Murdoch's house is threatened, according to news this morning. One can only hope he is still inside it.

Driven up and down this road many times.

It looks like something out of a disaster movie.

I wouldn't call it that. Fires are being put out as the Santa Ana dies, casualties are low.

But at night it looks like outtakes from Volcano.

Always have to go look at a map when this happens to see how close the fires are to my brother's place - my US geography sucks.

    Agreed.

iircc, The northern and souther CA have never been this frequent or large. (Couldn't be arsed to google.)

I just read a NYT article that stated that part of the weird weather is that CA got lots of rain this year which caused vegetation to grows more and more fuller, giving more fuel to the fires with these fierce winds.

It may only be the beginning of annual fire rampage in CA.

We'll get ours again, too...When the warm weather comes...Blessed with snow and freezing temperatures at the moment...But we're just the northern extension of the "food chain"...Sorry 'bout that, "Boob"...

The cold has a lot of benefits...Can't really acknowledge them and appreciate them until you've experienced it...A lot of hardships, as well, but you adapt and learn...Some live solely for snowboarding and skiing...

And when the planet gets "real hot," everyone will fight for the north land...

Santa Barbara is being used as a stay place for evacuees, but the smoke is very rough. UCSB cancelled all classes yesterday because of the air quality, my kid there says it sucks and they have run out of masks. Hard to study for finals next week when the university is closed. No access to tutors or the libraries...

^ B/C of the air it might be safer to leave and drive north and stay in a hotel/motel for a couple/few days. ?

Just read about hundreds of thorough bred horses turned loose so they had a chance to survive the fires. At least a dozen horses dead and I presume many missing.

    San Diego area burning.

Disturbing video of these horses in the link.
