Hurricane Harvey will be major disaster: Texas governor
    3 hours ago

Parts of the central Texas coast have been battered by hurricane winds
Texas is facing a "very major disaster" as Hurricane Harvey approaches its coastline, the state's governor says.

It is now a category four storm as it powers across the Gulf of Mexico. It is due to make landfall on Texas' central coast very late on Friday.

Greg Abbott has asked for more federal aid to cope with the storm, which may be the worst to hit the US in 12 years.

The National Hurricane Center said storm surges may bring life-threatening floods in and around Houston.

Dallas preps 'mega-shelter' as Texas braces for more rain

Houston (CNN)Harvey is no longer a hurricane, but life-threatening flooding continued in and around Houston on Sunday night as citizens with boats assisted authorities in search and rescue efforts.

Flooding from Tropical Storm Harvey is overburdening resources in the country's fourth-largest city, prompting authorities to call on volunteers with watercraft for help in rescuing those trapped in homes and buildings.

An immediate respite from Harvey's wrath seems unlikely to come. The National Weather Service calls the flooding "unprecedented," and warns things may become more dire if a forecasted record-breaking 50 inches of rain does fall on parts of Texas in coming days. In anticipation of a worsening situation, Dallas is turning its main convention center into a "mega-shelter" that can host 5,000 evacuees.

The rainfall threatens to exacerbate an already dangerous situation, as Harvey's rains have left many east Texas rivers and bayous swollen to their banks or beyond.

    Harrowing tales from Houston

"The breadth and intensity of this rainfall are beyond anything experienced before," the weather service said. "Catastrophic flooding is now underway and expected to continue for days."

The storm killed two people in Texas, authorities said, and the death toll will likely rise. More than 1,000 people were rescued overnight, and Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner warned that some 911 calls are going unanswered as operators "give preference to life-threatening calls."

a reminder for the people of texas...hurricane sandy hit NY and NJ in 2012....the members of congress from texas voted against federal disaster aid....and then later ensured that flood insurance payments were delayed by 3 months.

Cars, trucks and all vehicles that have water rise above the dash board are done. The electrical system will fry out leaving the vehicles useless.

They often sell these out of state before a "flooded title" can be attached to the title.

    Looks bad.

And Ray, do you remember the Katrina thread on AJ?

    Boy those were the days!

At least nine people dead as Tropical Storm Harvey continues its rampage across Texas

Tropical Storm Harvey continued to pummel southeast Texas on Monday, leaving at least nine people dead and vast swaths of the nation’s fourth-largest city unrecognizable as murky brown water submerged highways, houses, shopping plazas and entire neighborhoods.

Federal officials said more than 30,000 people in Houston and across the Gulf Coast were likely to seek temporary shelter as Harvey, which initially made landfall as a hurricane, continued to drench parts of Texas and Louisiana with heavy rain and surging floodwaters.

Parts of Harris County have seen 30 inches of rain — and an additional 15 to 25 inches are still on the way as Harvey regains strength, the National Weather Service said.

    Klon,

    It's called the National Guard.

And FEMA is worth learning about it if you care.

For the one who has a long distance transmission line into his thinking:

Wondering whether there is any army (well, in USA they do not have "army"?) capacity (potential) available that might be helpful for some rescue actions? (they should be in possession of a special gear that can make wonders, shouldn't they?)

However, only in case they are not needed for some more urgent humanitarian actions somewhere else than in its own country...

The figures of the helpers can be changed by a keystroke

Pentagon: Military response in Texas could soon expand
Robert Burns, Associated Press Published 1:46 p.m. ET Aug. 29, 2017

Washington — The military’s role in Harvey rescue and recovery efforts has been limited by weather and flooding but could soon expand by tenfold or more, a senior National Guard officer said Tuesday.

Air Force Maj. Gen. James Witham told reporters there currently are about 3,500 National Guard troops involved, including about 3,000 from the Texas National Guard. He estimated that the Texas guard number could rise to 8,000 to 10,000 in coming days, possibly joined by 20,000 to 30,000 from other states.

Pentagon: Military response in Texas could soon expand

The NG troops from Texas are surely busy to care first for themselves. Pity that e.g. 30,000 servicemen (other countries have soldiers) have to care for Korea(s)

Texas Military Bases Feeling The Effects Of Hurricane Harvey
Military bases in Texas are “battening down” for the impending storm.

Major Timothy Wade says they’re battening down for the storm.
“on the base, they’re taking down a lot of the flags that are normally up because those can become dangerous with high wind. All of our vehicles and things along those lines are being moved inside of hangars.”

It's getting worse. A Levee was breached in Brozoria county to the South of Houston.

Also, 80% of homeowners do not have flood insurance.

About 80% of Hurricane Harvey victims do not have flood insurance, face big bills
Bernard Condon and Ken Sweet, The Associated Press Published | Updated 11:30 a.m. ET Aug. 29, 2017

NEW YORK - Homeowners suffering flood damage from Harvey are more likely to be on the hook for losses than victims of prior storms — a potentially crushing blow to personal finances and neighborhoods along the Gulf Coast.

Insurance experts say only a small fraction of homeowners in Harvey’s path of destruction have flood insurance. That means families with flooded basements, soaked furniture and water-damaged walls will have to dig deep into their pockets or take on more debt to fix up their homes. Some may be forced to sell, if they can, and leave their communities.

All these people taken out in boats, they have a second problem: They have no insurance,” said Robert Hunter, director of insurance at the Consumer Federation of America.

I sence a bit of angst in those wishing a natural disaster on Texans. Sort of sad as I'm sure some of these folks sent aid to others in times of crisis. Surprisingly few have perished thus far. Some gambled and lost like the woman that drove her car into deep water. I guess you could say she was in over her head. Makes me wonder if Fredwiggy didn't make the right move.
