Barcelona: 13 dead, two men arrested after van mows down pedestrians in Las Ramblas d

At least 13 people are dead and 80 are injured, after a van mounted the pavement and ploughed into pedestrians in Barcelona's historic Las Ramblas district.

    Key points:
    • A van drove into pedestrians in a busy tourist district in Barcelona
    • Two people were seen fleeing the vehicle, local media reported
    • Catalan police confirm the incident is being treated as a terror attack

Catalan police have confirmed they have arrested two men in relation to the crash, and the incident is being treated as a terror attack.

Carles Puigdemont, Catalonia's regional head, said 80 people had been hospitalised.
"Unfortunately the number of fatalities will likely rise," Catalonia's regional interior chief Joaquim Forn said during a news conference.
Police also confirmed a driver ran into two policemen at a checkpoint earlier on Thursday (local time), but did not indicate if the two incidents were related.

Media reports said the van had zigzagged at speed down the famous Las Ramblas avenue, a magnet for tourists.
"I heard screams and a bit of a crash and then I just saw the crowd parting and this van going full pelt down the middle of the Ramblas," eyewitness Tom Gueller told the BBC.
"I immediately knew that it was a terrorist attack or something like that.

"It wasn't slowing down at all. It was just going straight through the middle of the crowds in the middle of the Ramblas."

The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the attack via its Amaq propaganda arm.

What some people call using events such as these to gain political capital others see as just stating facts. Facts such as Europe has failed to secure its borders and Merkel basically introduced an open door policy and has been trying to force other countries against their will to take in immigrants from her failed policy which even she now regrets. Controlled immigration is fine when individual countries can decide who does and doesn't come in, uncontrolled not so much.....

Spanish police shoot five after second vehicle attack

Spanish police in the town of Cambrils on Friday shot dead five attackers wearing fake suicide belts after a car ran down and injured six civilians and a police officer, one day after a similar attack left 13 dead in Barcelona.

ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attacks, which have led to three arrests.

The driver from Thursday’s deadly van attack, who escaped on foot, was still at large, according to local reports.

You're confused. The right wing Spanish prime minister is already trying to milk this for everything he can get out of it. However I doubt that people have forgotten that his party jumped the gun and blamed the Basques for the Madrid train attacks a few years back, based upon no evidence. The perpetrators were Al Quaida.

As to ETA, they declared a truce years ago and are now pretty much defunct. Politics has replaced the gun.

Barcelona attack: Spain terror cell had 120 gas canisters

Police say the wrecked house in Alcanar is a focal point of the investigation
A 12-strong terror cell that carried out two attacks in Spain this week had collected 120 gas canisters and was planning to use them in vehicle attacks, Spanish police say.
Canisters were found at a house said to be used by the cell that blew up in the town of Alcanar on Wednesday night.

Police are still hunting for the driver of the van that hit dozens of people on Barcelona's Las Ramblas, killing 13.

In addition to the 13 killed on Thursday afternoon on Las Ramblas, a woman died in a second vehicle attack early on Friday in the town of Cambrils. Five suspected jihadists were shot dead by police in the second attack.

Catalan police chief Josep Lluis Trapero has given an update on the investigation.
He said the cell was still believed to consist of 12 men and had been planning attacks for more than six months. One person remained at large, four were under arrest and there were two sets of human remains to be identified, he added.

The person at large was the driver of the van, Mr Trapero said, adding that police knew his identity but would not reveal it.
But police have confirmed they are hunting Moroccan-born Younes Abouyaaqoub, 22, who Spanish media say was the driver.

The two sets of remains to be identified may refer to victims of the house explosion at Alcanar.
Spanish media have speculated the two may be Youssef Aallaa, the brother of one of the suspected jihadists killed at Cambrils, and Abdelbaki Es Satty, an imam from the town of Ripoll, north of Barcelona, where a number of the suspects are from.

The imam apparently left the mosque abruptly in June and has not been seen since. The mosque president said he had told him he wanted to go back to Morocco.

"We're starting to see clearly that [the Alcanar house] was the place where they were preparing explosives for one or more attacks in the city of Barcelona," Mr Trapero said.
He added: "We are not in a position to say what caused the radicalisation of these people."

Mr Trapero said police could not rule out that the suspect still at large had crossed the French border, although he had "no specific information on this".

The father of two of those shot dead by police in Cambrils, Mohamed and Omar Hychami, told the BBC he was devastated. Hecham Igasi also accused the imam of radicalising his sons.

It is now known that three vehicles were rented under the credit card of Younes Abouyaaqoub.
One was used in the Las Ramblas attack, another was found after the attack in the town of Vic and a third in Ripoll.

Mr Trapero said the cell had planned to fill all three with explosive material to carry out attacks.

Some reports in Spanish media say the jihadist cell had intended to target the iconic, Gaudi-designed church with explosives.

His Mum is Thai. At least, according to Thai social media I've seen. Not seen it anywhere else.

Crackdown on car and van rentals to halt terror attacks
British drivers will face extra checks before renting vehicles to ensure they are not extremists under Government plans being developed after the Barcelona attack.
Ministers are so concerned by how easily terrorists are getting hold of rented vans to drive into pedestrians that they have ordered a crackdown, the Telegraph has learnt.
Information handed over to rental companies – including names, addresses and financial details – could be cross-checked against criminal watch lists, sources said.
Drivers could also be told to give more personal details as officials consider whether more information could help spot likely attackers.
Barcelona was the latest target for an attack using a rental vehicle after similar incidents in Westminster, London Bridge, Finsbury Park and Nice.

Can't imagine a Britain where people are investigated for wanting to rent a van, maybe in time this will extend to those wishing to buy a knife, gas canister, nails, kitchen or gardening stuff, sports equipment...but our glorious leaders are quite right, the jihadists will never change the Brit way of life.

Good that it's illegal to hijack trucks and vans, even if they're not used to drive into crowds, but does anyone know what the cunning plan is to purge people from owning/renting cars that can also do quite a bit of damage?

Then you have an extremely poor imagination and no knowledge of recent history. Go to Belfast, which as you may know is in Britain, and ask around about life before the Good Friday Agreement.

Yes, for sure, not a clue what's going on in Britain. Good that you know, I can clue up by your take on it.
