Supervolcano in Europe may blow cork

We know that geological time is much longer than our lives and this newspaper may be sensationalist, but this is relevant and there could be millions of people involved. I hear pizzas in Naples are very delicious. You better get there fast if you want to enjoy one.

Supervolcano 'worse than Vesuvius' that could kill MILLIONS across Europe 'ready to blow'

A SUPERVOLCANO on the brink of blowing threatens to wipe out Europe, kill millions “immediately” and bring the world economy to its knees.

Around two thousand years ago Mount Vesuvius erupted, destroying the Roman city of Pompeii and killing an estimated 1,500 people.

    http://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/late...ption-vesuvius

Today, a far more sinister supervolcano named Campi Flegrei is lurking underneath Naples in Italy.

Shock research, revealed last month, warned that the “big daddy” of Vesuvius is showing signs of “reawakening” and may be on the brink of going off.

Should it blow in a “big one” eruption, experts told Daily Star Online thousands, possibly millions, of people across Europe would be killed “immediately” from incineration and suffocation.

Dense black ash clouds would block out the sun, plunging the continent into months, if not years, of eerie darkness.

Tens of billions would be instantly wiped off the global economy as air travel, industry and farming would be ground to a halt.

The environment would take a pounding too as a boiling black cloud of hit gas would shoot into the atmosphere, triggering acid rain and accelerating global warming.

Worryingly scientists cannot predict and have no idea when it will next blow its top.

Dr. Luca De Siena, Geophysics professor at University of Aberdeen, is one of the leading experts researching the volcano.

Campi Flegrei last blew in 1538 in an eruption lasting eight days that formed a new mountain, Monte Nuovo.

Actually volcanic erruptions cause global cooling, they block out the sun and its heat.

''triggering acid rain and accelerating global warming.''

I thought either global warming , brexit, or donald trump would get a mention .
but please- the sky is blacked out and it gets hotter

This Eyetie eruption is a mere burp compared to the Yellowstone national park super volcano which will eventually blow in a cataclysmic blast sufficient to be termed an extinction event.

The problem us that thousands of people actually live within the volcano. It's a potential disaster for Italy but not of the scale implied by the hyperbole of this Dannyboy style piece.

Yeah, I've read about that one.

    Massive and deadly.

As usual when talking about geological time, we could be talking about that eruption in 1 million years, or 10+ million years?

    Sooner?

Yup. Blows once every 600,000 years according to geologists. We're a little overdue apparently.

Anyway, I found this. There is a possibility - note the term *possibility* that it'll blow chunks within 80 years.

Yellowstone about to blow? Scientists warning over SUPER-VOLCANO that could kill MILLIONS

SCIENTISTS have warned the world is in "volcano season" and there is up to a 10% chance of an eruption soon killing millions of people and devastating the planet.

Volcanoes are the biggest threat to human survival, claim scientists

Instances of volcanic eruptions are their highest for 300 years and scientists fear a major one that could kill millions and devastate the planet is a real possibility.

Experts at the European Science Foundation said volcanoes – especially super-volcanoes like the one at Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, which has a caldera measuring 34 by 45 miles (55 by 72 km) - pose more threat to Earth and the survival of humans than asteroids, earthquakes, nuclear war and global warming.

There are few real contingency plans in place to deal with the ticking time bomb, which they conclude is likely to go off within the next 80 years.

The disposal of fracking waste has been blamed for earthquakes.

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/artic...disposal-wells

Could it be that it may also destabilise volcanic areas enough to increase volcanic activity.

Although Wyoming does not have as many fracking wells and deep disposal wells as some other states it does have quite a lot some close to Yellowstone and even a few inside the park.

Wyoming Map of Oil & Gas Wells

Italy also carries out fracking and there has been conjuncture that it may have triggered the recent earthquakes.

When karakatoa blew in the early 1800s the world went into a 2 or 3 year mini ice age. In other words the pollution put out bye 1 volcano overwhelms all the pollution put out bye mankind for many years in just a few days. Natures effect on the world climate survival is overwhelming compared to man.

I assume your asking the author of the article.

Well, at last we have a refreshing new threat to help relieve the pressure on Donald Trump. He just wants to temporarily halt visa issuance to a handful of failing states for 90 days, but surely a gigantic volcanic eruption killing millions could diminish the perceived importance of this Trump atrocity....at least for a few days.
    I blame the Americans......and Thaksin.

The supervolcano beneath Yellowstone National Park has not erupted for around 70,000 years. When it next erupts, scientists say most of the US will be covered by a blanket of ash, while there will be major climate changes felt across the globe.

Currently, experts say they are 99.9% confident Yellowstone will not blow in the 21st century but no one knows exactly when the next event will be.
When will Yellowstone supervolcano erupt again? Scientists might have worked it out

Humans are the greatest threat to human survival.
To blame the planet for our downfall is quite ignorant and self-important.

    The Earth?
The Earth is self-healing, yet a little natural selective extermination process would help in reassuring such healing.

Unfortunately the planet often chooses too few victims of entirely the wrong calibre. Wait until Trump visits the Vatican, then consume the entourage of both disciples.

    No it doesn't.

The average time between eruptions is 600,000 years, according to their data.

Some have been 10,000 years, some have been 3 million years. 600,000 years is simply the average that gives no indication as to the time frame before the next.

    Educate yourself.
