Top Bullfighter Barrio Gored To Death By Bull

One of Spain's top bullfighters has died after being gored to death by a bull at a festival in the east of the country.

Victor Barrio, 29, had tried to attract the bull with a "muletazo" manoeuvre but it caught him off guard, sending him to the ground with a painful somersault.

The bull, named Lorenzo, then gored him in the chest.

Hundreds of people had been watching Mr Barrio perform at a tournament in the town of Teruel in Aragon when the bull attacked.

The bullfighter was rushed to hospital but doctors were unable to save his life.

Mr Barrio's death - the first matador fatality in Spain this century - was also shown live on TV.

In a final tweet five days ago Mr Barrio posted a picture of himself training, writing: "With the mind set on Teruel".

According to El Pais, Mr Barrio decided on a career in bullfighting at the age of 20, having previously combined his studies with working on a golf course.

He reportedly said: "I had always felt a great admiration for bullfighters and the party but I was ashamed to say I wanted to be a bullfighter and a hero, as I saw them."

Tributes were paid to Mr Barrio by many, including Spain's acting prime minister Mariano Rajoy, who sent his condolences to the bullfighter's family and friends, adding: "rest in peace".

The festival was suspended following Mr Barrio's death.

While around 10 people die each year at Spain's famous bull runs, the last matador death was in 1987 when Jose Eslava Caceres was trapped against boards and his lungs pierced by the bull.

I would post pictures but life's too short.

While any human death is not to be celebrated (well, nearly any), given the context and that the bull always dies anyways, for the enjoyment of the crowd..., one feels that 'a victory' the other way from time to time is only fair and righteous.

I've been through Teruel. Great touring route on the way south.

Bullfighting is one of the finest sports in the world that defines a people and it is a wondrous miracle that a European country plays host to it.

Can't get enough of watching it and whenever I'm in Spain I always flick on the TV channel that may be carrying it.

My favourite stage is the Tercio de Banderillas - very acrobatic and the epitome of acting with grace and precision under pressure.

Err, my association with Spain in the past has been long. Not many bits of it I haven't been to and had I not taken a different road I would be there now.

Spain is really a geographical expression and all the more interesting for it. The Spanish are more intelligent and subtle than the average Brit lump and have infinitely better manners.

Bob, he wasn't a nigra, he was a matador in the feria.

Sheesh, anyone might think he had just fucked a white woman and shoved his finger up a lardy-arsed, white, Texican's Sheriff's arse.

    No, not at all.

Brexit really has changed nothing for me, Brits are still, in the main, unattractive, boorish, stupid, lumpen bores with limited horizons and even lower brows, and increasingly becoming more American albeit with worse teeth.

Aieeeee! Caramba! ( Gent exeunts sideways, clapping and stamping his feet in a syncopated staccato ....)

Between yesterday's comments (about Dallas Police Officer murder victims) and this, maybe you should go back on your meds?

An American tourist in Spain goes to a restaurant and notices another guy eating some weird thing. He calls the waiter and says, "Excuse me. Can I have that same dish, please?"
The waiter says, "No sir, You can't."
    He asks, "Why not?"
Waiter: "Because, sir, they are the balls of a bull."
Man: "So what? I want them!"
Waiter: "No, sir. You dont understand. Here in Spain, bullfights occur, and the balls of the bull are chopped off and supplied to our restaurant, so we get only one pair of bull's balls a day. If you like, I'll reserve the next pair for you."
Man: "Okay, I'll come back tommorow."
The next day, the man goes in and is served a pair of small balls. Outraged he asks, "What the hell is this! Yesterday's balls were much bigger!"
Waiter : You don't understand something, sir. Sometimes the bull wins."

Bullfighting is savage and pointless. Take a captive bull, weaken it by repeated wounds and loss of blood, and then let some prancing asshole in a cape murder what's left of it to the cheers of the mob.

Sorry they executed the bull for trying to protect himself.

About the dead 'bullfighter' I care not a whit.

    The sun also Rises.

It was to me, a travel book.

It piqued my interest in Europe, where I went soon after.
