46% of Americans would have difficulty accessing $400?

    This seems difficult to believe.

America’s ‘recovery’ is baloney — we’re actually broke
    By Jonathon M. Trugman May 28, 2016 | 7:00pm

The Federal Reserve last week confirmed what most Americans already know.
    We’re broke!
In its latest report on the state of the US economy, the central bank said 46 percent of Americans would “struggle to meet emergency expenses of $400.”
“The new survey findings shed important light on the economic and financial security of American families seven years into the recovery,” said Federal Reserve Board Governor Lael Brainard.

Yes, there is data upon data on the fact that Americans are indeed broke.

I think that could be said about most of the world. I remember reading a while ago that that 20% of those in the UK have no savings whatsoever and around a third has less than £500 to their name, many working people just live from payday to payday

Sounds about right from what I have seen. Many don't even work anymore just sit around waiting for the monthly Govt handouts.

America is not broke, they simply decided to hand the county over to the rich in the 1979 election.... the money is still there its just that you plebs only get to see it when the rich loan it to you at pay day rates

but then this is what you have been voting for... so I guess its what you want and deserve.

I agree with BobR's first statement....I too find it impossible to believe almost half of Americans would have trouble coming up with $400.

I live on a budget and have saving in the bank if more funds are needed. You won't find me with a begging bowl for minor hospital treatment like some of the locals do !!
I just brought a new motorbike so things aren't that tight

    Half is 50%.

Will try to chase the data tomorrow, but if you look at the percentage of working poor (huge) working class (the majority) middle class (small business owners), that live outside of Seattle city limits, Manhattan, West LA, and other cities, then it is indeed plausible.

Note the debt the average american carries, and voila.....

Yes, I had a thread about it a couple of months ago. It was in the news at the time.

    Very strange.
Whenever I read about the wages Americans earn, I feel like a pauper, but now it looks like it's all to be seen in a different light.
Are living expenses really so much higher? I thought electric, internet, petrol etc. cost much less than in Germany.

What do they waste their money on?

For a moment I was feeling like a real looser. I thought it said 400k. The number of people here on some kind of gov. assistance is unreal. I think it also has alot to do with where you live and how hard you're willing to work mixed in with a bit of luck.

The issue is whether or not after one pays off all monthly bills etc does the average joe have more than 400 bucks leeway. Most average families throughout western economies struggle to remain solvent and usually rely on credit cards to pay for extra expenses not budgeted. Its been that way for years.

Bullshit the average western family will have a lot more than 400 bucks leeway a month if they live within their means, if you ain't earning the money you don't need the latest car, phone and eat/drink out all the time and can still live comfortably. It's the sense of entitlement that people have is the reason why they have no money. You have the choice save your disposable income on spend it on shit, sadly most people decide to blow it on shit without first having a safety net.
