7.1 magnitude quake strikes Alaska



(CNN)A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Alaska early Sunday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake's epicenter hit near Cook Inlet, 162 miles southwest of Anchorage. It was about 50 miles deep.

Joshua Veldstra, a professional photographer who lives in Homer, said the earthquake lasted about 30 seconds.

"When it hit, it was just soft at first, and it just kept getting bigger," Veldstra said. "It was one of those moments where you didn't' know if it was going to get worse or if it was going to calm down."

Anchorage police tweeted that there were no reports of major damage or injury following the earthquake.

The USGS reported that there was a low likelihood of casualties and damage, but the agency's "Did You Feel It?" map shows strong shaking could be felt near Anchorage.

The National Weather Service said there was no tsunami threat from the quake because of how deep it struck.

Two smaller earthquakes -- a 4.0 and a 3.2 -- struck within 30 minutes after the first one.

There was also a 6.6 quake off the coast of Mexico on Thursday. I am presently on a fault line that is in the middle of those two quakes hoping that some pressure was relieved and it's not a sign of things to come.

There was a 4.8 quake here last month and I felt enough of it to know I never want to feel that again.

Washington (AFP) - A 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck southern Alaska early Sunday, US seismologists said.

The US Geological Survey, updating its earlier location for the quake, said it struck at 1030 GMT and was centered about 83 kilometers (51 miles) east of Old Iliamna.

The USGS, which initially had assessed the magnitude of the quake as 7.1, estimated that it had a depth of 127 kilometers (79 miles).

There is only a low likelihood of casualties and damage, the USGS said, adding that "weak" shaking from the quake could be felt in nearby cities.

One of the cities where it could be felt was Anchorage, the closest large city, some 162 miles (259 kilometers) from the epicenter.

Twitter was awash with posts -- including from Anchorage -- saying the shaking was pronounced and prolonged.

"Everyone in Anchorage is awake and on Twitter right? Biggest longest of my entire life. Family is all hanging in our bed now," wrote @jgrenn.

Another Twitter user, @Shelbae97, wrote: "Thank Alaska for that earthquake," and posted a photo a broken mirror and other household objects flung to her feet.

A local power company, Matanuska Electric Association, said in a statement that "the 7.1m earthquake at 1:30 am caused several outages," including to two power substations.

A local television station, KTUU, reported that about 4,900 Matanuska customers were without power.

"Crews have been called in from home to assess the situation and restore power," the power company said.

The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no risk of a tidal wave "because the earthquake is located too deep inside the earth."

Strong 6.1 quake hits Mediterranean between Morocco and Spain

Rabat (AFP) - A strong 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck early Monday in the Mediterranean between Morocco and Spain, the US Geological Survey said.

The shallow quake hit at 4:22 am (0422 GMT) 62 kilometres (39 miles) north of the Moroccan city of Al Hoceima and 164 kilometres east-southeast of Gibraltar, USGS said. It was followed by a 5.3-magnitude tremor.

In its initial assessment of the quake's impact, USGS said there was "a low likelihood of casualties and damage".

In February 2004 a strong 6.3 earthquake that hit near Al Hoceima killed 631 people.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — The rumbling and shaking heard across the Lowcountry early Tuesday afternoon may have come from a group of F-18s on a training run creating a sonic boom.

Captain Clay Groover from Marine Air Station Beaufort would not say how many F-18 Hornets were involved or what flight path they were following, but he did say the jets were in the air at the time people across the Lowcountry heard and felt the boom. Still, MCAS Beaufort officials could not confirm the boom was created by the jets.

The jets' flight path led them over open water about 15 miles offshore, officials said.

Officials with the U.S. Geological Survey and the College of Charleston were able to confirm that there had not been a Charleston-area earthquake. CofC officials speculated that the boom and rumbling was caused by a sonic boom. The earliest reports of the boom showed up on Twitter around 12:45 p.m. A seismometer operated by The Citadel also did not record a seismic event at the time of the boom, but did show several rumbles about an hour earlier that went unnoticed around the Lowcountry.

Geologists were able to say it was not a tectonic event in less than an hour.

"Reports of a loud noise along with houses shaking is indicative of a sonic boom generated by an aircraft of some kind. Sonic booms are pressure waves generated as the aircraft exceeds the speed of sound, they are perceived by the people on the ground differently under different atmospheric conditions," said Dr. Erin Beutel, an associate geology professor at the College of Charleston. "It can also take between 2-60 seconds after the plane passes through for the boom to be heard, and over the ocean, the pressure wave can travel further and be heard by more people than on land."
Meteorologists supported that theory on Twitter shortly after the event, pointing to weather radar picking up chaff right about the time the boom was heard and felt.

Charleston is not a stranger to mysterious booms. They're often attributed to sonic booms from passing jets or Seneca Guns.

Wellington: A magnitude 4.1 earthquake near Christchurch was felt across New Zealand, sending hearts racing and prompting people to contact loved ones.

The quake struck at 12.24pm local time on Thursday, putting workplaces across the region on edge as the country approaches the fifth anniversary of the February 22, 2011, quake that devastated Christchurch and killed 185 people.

It was centred 10 kilometres west of Christchurch,, at a depth of 16 kilometres, according to GeoNet.

More than 2000 people reported feeling the shake, including residents in Dunedin, Masterton, Napier and Auckland.

St John's Ambulance received no reports of injury. Police and Fire Service did not respond to any quake-related incidents.

"This earthquake is a reminder that we are still in the post-earthquake period in Christchurch and Canterbury," St John spokesman Ian Henderson said.

"We strongly encourage people to keep an eye out for their friends and family, especially those who are ill, live alone or who are frail. This is especially important as we head towards the fifth anniversary of the February 22, 2011, earthquake and earthquakes will be on peoples' minds."

The quake was followed by one of a lighter magnitude 2.9, 22 minutes later, centred a few hundred metres away in Prebbleton. It struck at a depth of 10km.

Spooked residents were quick to report the shake on Twitter using the #eqnz hashtag.

Christchurch City councillor Glenn Livingstone wrote on Twitter that the quake caused caused a "bit of a nudge in the CCC chambers".

Rebuild Christchurch tweeted they felt "the whole building" move.

"Biggest shake in quite some time," they said.

Brian Dolan said the quake happened "just to remind us of our earthquake drills".

Some said it brought back bad memories, while one person said their heart "was still pounding" several minutes after.

At 11.03am, just over an hour before the 4.1 quake, there was a magnitude 3.1 earthquake centred 10 kilomteres north-east of Culverden, in North Canterbury.

The earthquake, which struck at 3:25 p.m. local time on Saturday, was centered about 95 kilometers (59 miles) north of Yelizovo, a town in Kamchatka Krai. It struck about 159 kilometers (99 miles) deep, making it a relatively deep earthquake.

Shaking was felt throughout large parts of the peninsula, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) estimated that some 278,000 people may have felt the earthquake, with moderate shaking felt in Yelizovo and Paratunka.

Light shaking was also felt in one of the region's largest cities, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy, which is about 110 kilometers (68 miles) south of Saturday's epicenter. Computer models from the USGS indicated that major damage was unlikely to have occurred.

Mulltiple aftershocks strike Russia’s far eastern Kamchatka Region

A strong, deep 7.0-magnitude earthquake rocked Russia’s far eastern Kamchatka peninsula on Saturday, the US Geological Survey reported.

The quake hit 106 kilometers north of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy, the capital city of Russia’s Kamchatka Krai.

The depth of the earthquake was reported at 153 kilometers. There have been no immediate reports of serious damage or casualties. No tsunami warning has been issued.

The area was hit with at least seven aftershocks since the event, Kamchatka’s Geophysical Service said. Five of them measured 2.0 and above, according to a spokesman. The remaining too - 4.5 and 5.2, respectively.

Rescue crews are searching and inspecting buildings, TASS quoted an emergency services spokesperson as saying. “There have been no reports of damage yet,” Yulia Ananyeva said. “We saw furniture and doors shake as well as swinging chandeliers. Our office is one the first floor.”

She added that the buildings in the area were built to withstand a magnitude 9 quake.

Meanwhile on social media, frightened witnesses posted descriptions of the strong tremors felt in the region.

Terrified shoppers quickly evacuated one of the local malls when people felt tremors from the quake. One resident andre_prilepsky posted a picture showing people waiting outside in the snow without coats on.

Ksenya Maksimova tweeted about the “unpleasant feeling … when everything is shaking,” while several other young Twitter users said they “almost died of fright.”

Others were more enthusiastic about their first time in a strong earthquake.

“Cool earthquake! Our telly nearly fell over!” Senya Mikhaylitskaya tweeted, adding that she and her friend were about to rush into the street when it all ended.

“The earthquake broke our bottle of Bacardi,” stated Marina Brovkina, posting a pic of the shattered bottle of booze.

On Instragram, shamans_wood described the events as “action Kamchatka-style,” saying that the quake actually felt different in different parts of the city – from the sights and sounds of bouncing cars, wailing sirens, and even visibly shaking houses, to almost no noticeable effect.

When a journalist posted a comment asking user svetakov1 if she had any video of the quake, she replied: “Taking a video is the last thing you think about in such moments. I was thinking about whether I should pull my cat from under the cupboard [if] she’s dying there quietly … I hate those quakes.”

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake hit near northeast Taiwan on Tuesday (Feb 2), according to the China Earthquake Networks Centre.

The temblor took place at about 10.19pm local time, CENC added. No tsunami warning was issued but Twitter users as far away as Kaohsiung, on the southwest of the island, reported feeling tremors.

The US Geological Survey, which assessed the magnitude of the quake as 5.8, estimated that it had a depth of 190 kilometres.

There were no reports of injuries yet. Last year one man died and another was hospitalised after a fire caused by a powerful quake off Taiwan set buildings shaking in the capital Taipei and sparked a short-lived tsunami warning in far southwestern Japan.

A 6.4 magnitude struck southern Taiwan in the early hours of Saturday morning, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

Pictures in local media showed some buildings in the city of Tainan have collapsed and it is unclear whether there are any casualties.

The city government is reported to have set up an emergency response team. It is home to nearly two million people.

6.5 earthquake strikes eastern Indonesia

JAKARTA - A powerful 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Indonesia late Friday, but no tsunami warning was immediately issued, US seismologists said.

The earthquake hit at 5.02pm, the US Geological Survey said, and was centred three kilometres east-southeast of Andekanter in the Sumba region at a depth of 30 kilometres.

People as far north as Dunedin are reporting feeling a "severe" earthquake which struck far to the south of the country.

The 6 magnitude earthquake hit at 8.28am, 175km southwest of Snares Islands at a depth of 10km.

Geonet had recorded seven felt reports as of 9.02am. It was classified as "severe".

Several people in Southland and at least one in Dunedin have reported feeling the quake.

On Facebook, Irene-Síomhaith West said she felt the earthquake in North East Valley in Dunedin.

"Jolted me awake when it hit."

Department of Conservation operations manager for Murihiku Tony Preston said no DOC staff or members of the public were on Snares Island, and it was believed no-one was on any of the sub-Antarctic islands at the moment either.

8.1 magnitude quake struck Indonesia


Tsunami alert after a huge 8.1 magnitude quake struck Indonesia.

The powerful and shallow earthquake struck off the west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The epicentre was 502 miles southwest of Padang, USGS said.
