Colt Files For Bankruptcy After Gun Sales Slump

Gun manufacturer Colt Defense has revealed it is filing for bankruptcy as it battles declining demand and the loss of a lucrative US military contract.

The firearms maker, which supplied M4 carbines and M16 rifles in the past for the US military, listed debts of as much of $500m (£323m) when it filed in bankruptcy court in Wilmington, Delaware, on Sunday.

Existing lenders have agreed to provide $20m to allow it to continue operating while in bankruptcy, subject to court approval.

Under the scheme, the company, based in West Hartford, Connecticut, would be allowed to restructure its balance sheet.

The current management team, including chief executive Dennis Veillex, will remain in place until the process is completed in around 90 days.

Keith Maib, chief restructuring officer, said in a statement: "Colt remains open for business."

Sales in modern sports rifles and handguns fell 30% in 2014 and delays in US government sales have also hit the business.

Colt has struggled since November, when it took out a $70m rescue loan from Morgan Stanley to make an interest payment.

The company tried to restructure out of court, announcing in April an exchange offer for loans. That expired on 12 June.

Colt supplied the US military with M4 carbines used by front-line troops in the late 1990s and early 2000s, but that deal ended in 2013.

Founder Samuel Colt - a pioneer in the mass production of the revolver - opened his first plant in Paterson, New Jersey, in 1836.

He went on to become one of the 10 wealthiest businessmen in the US, according to the company website.

One of its rifles, the Winchester Model 1873, became known as "the gun that won the West" in the 19th century, with more than 700,000 being produced.

Colt died in 1862 and the age of 47. Armsmear, his home, still stands in Hartford and is a national historic landmark.

More imagination needed. The Swiss have trained St Bernard's to carry small casks of brandy to unfortunate brandy drinkers trapped in an avalanche. So why don't the Americans train coyotes to carry guns to people in need? I don't believe coyotes even require a dog license.

They were flying off shelves out of fear Obama was going to successfully ban them or make so many restrictions large numbers of Americans would be unable to own one. Now with the Republican Party in control and Obama on his way out, they no longer feel the need to panic buy.

If the Democrats (Obama's party) win in 2016 the panic buying will begin again.

Colt doesn't make the firearm(s) of choice these days. A nice Glock 17 for the ladies and the Glock 19 for the gents - more popular line of defense

I rather think most intelligent folk would realise they are not where they should really be if carrying a handgun was a prerequisite to normal daily life.

Guns are core to the problem, no western contry with gun control has anything like the issues ameria has with murder and violence. you have to compare america with narco states, third word countries... with highly ineffectual police to find places with higher rates of voilence.

guns make just too easy to kill. but its a reaility you and many of the american people do not want to belive. You just don't get it, do you? It's still legal there, and there are places left in the World where people can defend themselves and their property, and will not be arrested for shooting or beating a burglar in their home or a robber on the street.

Yes, Americans are losing all their freedoms and guns are clearly next on the list, but since we've been allowed to own them since we kicked out the British about 240 years ago, and there is no reason to change that now other than a continuation of the destruction of rights that has been going on since 2001.

Gun rights are one of the few things left Americans can be proud of and the people who accept gun control are as pathetic as my neutered dog.

Unfortunately America is too far gone to start up a serious gun control program.

As an Australian I'm all for gun control simply because we have a strong policy in Australia and it actually works.

It only works because we have a small population and the Governments gun control legislation was started many many years ago.

America has a very large population, the guns are already out there and the country has many fookin nutters getting around.

So if I was living in America I would be packing a gun and be secure in the fact that if I was a victim of crime I could blow the bad guy away and be protected by the Law. Quite fair enough.

So that's America for you. Guns are us.
