The anonymous female student posted a link on popular website The Student Rooms offering herself for sale in exchange for cash - and has so far attracted 92 posts from fellow students.

Despite the fact that her course - believed to be in the social sciences - will be almost finished by the time the new £9,000-a-year fees come into effect next year, the student says she needs the cash as she is from a poor family.

Her post, written at 4.34pm on December 26, states: "Considering selling virginity.

"I'm a 1st year student at a good uni. My family aren't that well off and I'd like money to fund my studies/give me more opportunities/options in life."

She goes on to say that she is a 'quite attractive' 18-year-old, adding that she is a slim blonde with a bust size of 32DD and has 'a pretty face (apparently)'.

The desperate teen adds: "How much do you think I'd get. Also, would I be able to keep it quite quiet."

A total of 92 students posted comments about the auction, many telling her not to do it and others saying she should expect a minimum of £2,000.

One student, calling himself Ritchie888, tells her: "While you're at it, sell your soul."

She responds by saying: "It's a commodity. So it's better to lose it on a ONS (one night stand) to some randomer in a drunken haze then profit from it?"

Another student, calling himself Three Mile Sprint, states: "Go for it, it's your body and if you stand to make a profit on something your not emotionally attached to then by all means do it.

"There are specialist markets and such for it, generally the price is around the £2,000 mark."

Another student, calling herself ChaoticSkills, said: "If you have very little self respect for yourself then you are more than likely to do it. Just because your family is poor doesn't mean you have to resort to such extremes.

"There's plenty of ways to make money you just need to go out and find a job save some money and contemplate how to spend it wisely.

"That's easier said then done, but like I said it's not really an option you should consider...from a moral viewpoint that is."

Wooly Mammoth responds to the auction by saying: "I think you would regret it for the rest of your life.

"As a virgin do you honestly want your first sexual experience to be purely based on financial gain? "The sort of men who pay for sex do not see the person they are sleeping with as a person, they see them as an object thats been bought and paid for and therefore do not care about the way that YOU feel during the sexual experience.

"They have paid for YOU to please THEM not vice versa. Do not expect any kind of support during what will undoubtedly be a nerve wrecking and sensitive experience.

"If your uncomfortable and don't wish to go through with it half way through then you can't expect the person who has paid for your body to be understanding.

"What kind of impression is this going to make on your life in the future when in 10 years time you may have a husband or boyfriend and every time they touch you it makes you flinch with the thought of such a terrible first sexual experience? "I promise you that doing this is a one way ticket to causing serious emotional harm that may not be able to be undone in the future.

"Money comes and goes, your virginity is only there once and a bad experience can put you off for a long time."

When she realises that many of the students aren't taking her seriously - putting in a top bid of just £18 and a packet of Refresher sweets, she fumes: "Well the going rate is £18 apparently...although hopefully I won't just be pitching to povo students."

The Student Room claims to be the 'world's largest online student community' - which helps with personal and professional advice, study guides and various other educational tips.

In 2004, 18-year-old Bristol University student Rosie Reid sold her virginity for £8,400 after auctioning herself off on eBay.

Although eBay withdrew her auction she ended up sleeping with a 44-year-old BT engineer who paid her £8,400 for a night with her in a hotel in north London.

She was reported to have had 2,000 offers after initially posting the auction as a joke, but then realising people would pay 'good money' to take her virginity.

Ok, so basically on the back of the last thread, I'm a 1st year student at a good uni. My family aren't that well off and I'd like money to fund my studies/buy property/give me more opportunities/options in life.
