Boston Bomber Tsarnaev Sentenced to Death

    AFP
    May 16, 2015

Boston (AFP) - A US jury on Friday sentenced 21-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev to death for his role in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings, one of the worst assaults on American soil since the September 11, 2001 attacks.

It took the jury more than 14 hours to choose death on six of 17 capital counts for the Muslim former university student of Chechen descent who came to the United States as a child and became a citizen. Their only other option was life without the possibility of release in America's toughest "super-max" prison in Colorado, which some have dubbed the "Alcatraz of the Rockies."

The same 12-member panel of jurors convicted him on April 8 on all 30 counts relating to the April 15, 2013 bombings, the murder of a police officer, a carjacking and a shootout while on the run.

Three people were killed and 264 others wounded, including 17 who lost limbs, in the twin blasts near the finish line at the northeastern city's popular marathon.

Tsarnaev went on the run and was arrested four days later, hiding and injured in a grounded boat on which he had scrawled a bloody message defending the attacks as a means to avenge US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

He showed no emotion as he stood, flanked by female lawyers and wearing a dark blazer with his hands clasped before him as the court clerk declared the death penalty verdict before a hushed room. US Attorney General Loretta Lynch called the sentence a "fitting punishment."

    - Death penalty opposition -

The verdict in the federal case came despite widespread local opposition to capital punishment in Massachusetts, a largely Democratic state that abolished the death penalty in 1947.

Prominent survivors, including the parents of the youngest victim Martin Richard, had also opposed the death penalty on the grounds that years of prospective appeals would dredge up their agony. The Richard parents were among other victims and survivors who crammed into the courtroom on Friday to hear the verdict.

The jury's 24-page verdict form showed that few on the panel bought into the defense argument that Tsarnaev was influenced by his 26-year-old brother Tamerlan, who was shot dead by police on the run. Only three said he acted under Tamerlan's influence and that Tamerlan planned, led and directed the bombings. Only two determined that Tamerlan shot dead a university police officer while the pair were on the run. Only one juror determined that he was unlikely to commit or incite acts of violence in the future while serving a life sentence.

The six death counts all relate to the pressure cooker bomber planted by Tsarnaev at the marathon finish line. His brother planted the other.

Government prosecutors delivered a powerful closing statement Wednesday, calling Tsarnaev a remorseless terrorist who deserves to die and declaring that life imprisonment would be the "minimum" punishment.

I would think being locked in a 6x10 foot room without any human contact or any form of news from the outside for the rest of his life would be worse than death...

He'll be in one for a decade or more before they kill him.

My understanding is the death penalty would land him at the Super Max in Colorado. Found a YouTube video a couple days ago where the warden, or a former warden, said being there is worth than death.

I guess guys like the Unabomber deal fairly well though. What I read claimed people that are intelligent can fill the time reading, doing puzzles and not lose it mentally.

I guess the last thing you see is back drop of the beautiful Rocky Mountains and then you never see it again. The only thing they ever see again outside the prison walls is the sky.

A bit pointless killing the chap. As a deterrent, it is utterly futile since these folk are motivated by their fanaticism and unlikely to respond to threats of death as a consequence of their misguided beliefs. Thus, this sentence is simply an act of judicial revenge satisfying the bloodlust of an unsophisticated and somewhat bovine constituency.

Very American really and comes as no surprise.

Wonder what family he has in the states that could or would visit him? His brother is dead ... not sure his parents are allowed in the USA ... that only leaves his sister-in-law.

That depends on how long they take over the killing.

Call me old fashioned if you must, but I do believe that for some crimes, and this was one of those crimes, the guilty must be made to suffer, either mentally or physically and in this case both.

Dozens of his victims will have to endure many years of painful surgery to treat their burns and dismemberment and I feel that only by making his life or his death as unpleasant as possible can justice be served.

There is nothing wrong with a desire for revenge.

I was reading something (can't find the link now) that implied that he might die of old age.

First he was given a federal death penalty at a trial in a state that no longer has the death penalty so the legal wranglings get even more tortuous than usual and even if they clear all that up the feds and states can't get the drugs needed to kill people anymore.

Okla. is going to experiment with using nitrogen and Utah is going back to firing squads and Nebraska is mail-ordering drugs from India!

If they want him to die quick it's probably best just to remand him into the custody of the Baltimore PD.

Much better existance than most of the world population. It will take years of appeals before he ever has to think about being put to death. In the mean time, he is fed, housed, clothed and taken care of by those he wanted to kill, go figure.

Yeah sure - life will be a barrel o'laughs. No need to worry about death 'til he's strapped on the gurney.

Quite how one may " feel " about it, is really irrelevant to we more civilised folk who are guided by our intellect rather than mere emotion. Essentially, you are advocating mob rule and whilst that may be sufficient for Northern tykes it certainly isn't acceptable behaviour to we more blessed by intelligence and the nous to use it.

If that ever happens. In the mean time no taxes, rent, credit card payments, fuel bills, grocery costs, utility bills, etc., etc. Do you really think it is going to be all that tough for this killer?

Russia is also having a field day decrying this sentence, and it is of course exactly what the nutters in Chechnya would have wanted.

You are entitled to your opinion as well as I am to mine, Because of terrorist nature of attacks this could be brought forward to military justice and he would be shot 6AM tomorrow.
But likes of you want martyrs to live as long as possible and spread their hate and how many people will die?

Well, gent, Old Testament attitudes won't be eradicated anytime soon. Any sooner than the Muslims giving up their several forms of Capital Punishment.
