The greatest tragedy of the whole thing is that the death penalty actually has great potential if it were reserved for and applied to criminals who truly deserve it. Smuggling drugs just isn't morally offensive enough to warrant the disproportionate response so then it gives the death penalty a bad name.

For me, providing drug users with drugs at their request does not come close in moral crime terms to the worst cases of violent crime against the individual such as torture, murder and rape.
Of course drug smuggling is bad but if we are to ever drum up actual support for returning the death penalty we would be best to focus public opinion on the crimes that are most morally repugnant.

Drugs don't cause misery at all, it's only when they are denied do they cause problems and in that respect governments should do much more to provide them at economic prices,and more widely. Decriminalisation is the only sensible course and in time would see an end to the quite dangerous proliferation of chemical legal highs. Heroin, cocaine and cannabis are all derived from natural occurring products and as long as everything is kept nice and organic then even " green " folk should be happy.
Killing someone simply because they breached daft drug laws is not only silly, it is pointless and quite mean. But then one doesn't expect much more from these little wogs.
