Hague Tribunal Rejects Beijing’s Claims in South China Sea

BEIJING — An international tribunal in The Hague delivered a sweeping rebuke on Tuesday of China’s behavior in the South China Sea, from the construction of artificial islands to interference with fishing, and ruled that its expansive claim to sovereignty over the waters had no legal basis.

The landmark case, brought by the Philippines, was seen as an important crossroads in China’s rise as a global power. It is the first time the Chinese government has been summoned before the international justice system, and neighboring countries have hoped that the outcome will provide a model for negotiating with Beijing or for challenging its assertive tactics in the region.

JUST IN: China refuses to accept South China Sea arbitration award, says it has historic rights in the waters

China's territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests in the South China Sea shall under no circumstances be affected by those awards. China opposes and will never accept any claim or action based on those awards, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"The Chinese government reiterates that, regarding territorial issues and maritime delimitation disputes, China does not accept any means of third party dispute settlement or any solution imposed on China.

The Chinese government will continue to abide by international law and basic norms governing international relations as enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, including the principles of respecting state sovereignty and territorial integrity and peaceful settlement of disputes, and continue to work with states directly concerned to resolve the relevant disputes in the South China Sea through negotiations and consultations on the basis of respecting historical facts and in accordance with international law, so as to maintain peace and stability in the South China Sea," it added.

FULL TEXT: Final decision on West PH Sea dispute by UN tribunal | Inquirer Global Nation

"This arbitration concerned the role of historic rights and the source of maritime entitlements in the South China Sea, the status of certain maritime features and the maritime entitlements they are capable of generating, and the lawfulness of certain actions by China that were alleged by the Philippines to violate the Convention

In light of limitations on compulsory dispute settlement under the Convention, the Tribunal has emphasized that it does not rule on any question of sovereignty over land territory and does not delimit any boundary between the Parties"

After admitting the Court has no juristiction the court takes it upon itself to judge the "lawfullness of the actions by China".

I wonder how they can have taken any other decisionif that was the remitthey acted upon.

But I will persevere and see if there are any other nuggets to be exploited.

They could always starve the poor indigenous landowners, grog them up, steal their lands or place then in concentration camps as others have done, and continue to do as we live and breath today.

    That is an epic understatement.

They can steal all the tech that that want but if they can not deploy it on the battlefield then it means fuck all. The Chinese have the will of an eight year old girl when it comes to stepping outside of their own boarders. They ran scared from the Viets on land so now they act like a little bitch with the SCS.

"Do not turn the South China Sea into a cradle of war," vice foreign minister Liu Zhenmin told reporters in Beijing, as he described the ruling as waste paper.
"China's aim is to turn the South China Sea into a sea of peace, friendship and cooperation."

I wonder why an Ameristani publisher in 1994 made the mistake of printing an atlas with the names of SE China islands/seas with Chinese names. A mistake, Chinese gold or maybe history, usage and legality/global powers treatise.

US publisher marked Huangyan Island as Chinese territory in 1994 - People's Daily Online

"Rand McNally, an American publisher that specializes in maps and other educational materials, labeled Huangyan Island using the Chinese transliteration system of pinyin in a 1994 world atlas, a Chinese American professor has recently pointed out.

Cui Jiaji, a retired professor who used to teach at the New York campus of DeVry University, told the Xinhua News Agency that the 1994 Illustrated Atlas of the World clearly marked "Huangyan Dao" in pinyin on pages 166 and 167.

Cui also noted that the island was placed outside the line of the border of the Philippines. “It is obvious that Huangyan Dao is outside the red border line, and is within Chinese territory,” he said.

In addition, Xisha and Nansha Islands in the South China Sea were all marked in pinyin, along with Yongshu Reef and Taiping Island. Other land areas on the pages were marked in English, Cui said."

Golly, Batman. I wonder why myself.
Lets see...the guys name is Cui Jaiji. Do you suppose he has some Chinese ancestry.
Did the publisher tell him what language to put the names on that map?
And do you suppose he did it in order to cinch a claim by China 12 years later that these were Chines territories---can't you see the names on the map, you fools.

I knew it. I knew it. I knew it.

Let me say firstly. I am assuming that the maps as illustrated in the article are genuine. My local Thai library unfortunately only has the 2005 Beano Book of Brown Lands on it's shelf.

The person, allegedly, bringing this to our attention certainly has a Chines looking name. I will give you that. Whether he ever sat foot in China is not stated, whether he was born and raised/attended Ameristani schools/universities is not stated. Whether he is a red spy lurking at an Ameristani University all these years just to raise a point in a Chinese newspaper is not stated.

What is crystal clear that an Ameristani publisher of books throughout the world, has produced an atlas of the world which indicates, nothing stronger than that, that some of it's atlas buyers believe certain islands in the SCS have Chinese "connections". They are not the world authority.

One could presume either the publisher is sloppy and copied the first map he could find. Or one could assume the publisher, being an exceptional publisher, situated in an exceptional country, with exceptional access to the truth, checked the facts prior to publishing an Atlas.

Further in the article there are "claims" that this atlas has been "revised" over time 1992, 1994 and 1999. One assumes the exceptional publisher used the most "correct" geographical names and locations. Who defines the "correct" names and locations is probably not the Chinese government. More likely a government official closer to home who just happens to be exceptionally inaccurate but bends to any political wind that is blowing.

Many people only buy one atlas in their lifetime, many people use an atlas as a factual book and many libraries use the NON-FICTION area to place their atlases.

But please, don't let facts cast a shadow on your prejudices or the blaze of headlines through the MSM.

China conducts test flights on two new airports on Nansha Islands (7) - People's Daily Online

No problems the first of the many commercial flights have landed. Tourists will now be able to taste the fresh fish and seafood from the devastated islands, swim in the pristine sea and sample the delights of the hostesses and blue khaki clad soldierettes manning the AAC missile systems.

When one of the CAAC (Chinese Airways, Always Crashing) nosedives into the pristine sea, they can blame on foreign military intervention.
