Does it make any materially mitigating difference if they despatched him humanely first (as one would a cow) before butchering him?

it seems to me the whole point of the video is to shock and horrify people, so i guess i was wondering why they didn't just show the whole thing from start to finish without edits.Originally Posted by The Ghost Of The Moog
It's not nice to be beheaded but is it any better to be blown up by a bomb or a missile fired from a jet or a drone, or killed by a bullet from a rifle? The end result is the same. Dead is dead.
It was meant to shock, yes.....but not just with gore. This made it a more powerful propaganda tool.
The video was slick in the sense of its production values. This wasn't as amateur as the fuzzy Al Zarqawi videos of prisoners being decapitated in the abattoir - taken with a hand held camcorder .
OK, that's an interesting theory, but i have to think that an unedited clip would have been more effective in meeting (what i assume to be ) their goals.Originally Posted by The Ghost Of The Moog
the NYT is reporting that ISIL was trying get the US to pay $100 million for foley's release. the US declined.
An unedited version would have shown merely that they are monsters.
This version appears to have had some art direction. eg: prisoner sitting on sand dune with panorama backdrop - the land of their desert god*.
*Mindful that Christianity is also a religion spawned from those same scrubby deserts.
Unfortunately until the US decided to leave weapons of mass destruction behind, when they ran out of Iraq, the sharp blade has always been the favoured "settlement" tool.Originally Posted by Koojo
The innocence of war reporters I leave for you to decide. The guilt of "our brave lads" dropping bombs and missiles from 10,000m has been proven not only to kill opponents in war but percentage wise,, a larger number of innocent mothers, daughters, wives, sons and old men at wedding parties, herding goats, collecting water from rivers or attending "church".
Is it more brutal, you decide. Was he a civilian, the opponents have history in that respect.
A tray full of GOLD is not worth a moment in time.
It's a war, not every side has the ability to kill from afar, away from cameras. Although there are plenty of videos showing the massacre of innocent men, woman and children left up on the internet for people to watch and cheer over.Originally Posted by Lancelot
"Shock and Awe" was the phrase utilised by none other than, the then, POTUS. Terrorism at it's glorious best, yes? What goes around usually comes back around, to somebodys distaste.Originally Posted by raycarey

Allegedly the US had already tried a “substantial and complex” rescue operation" and failed. How much did that cost how many lives lost, military and civilian. Where are the videos of it taken by the "civilian"? How much did it cost? Was it the first, second or third such mission?Originally Posted by raycarey
James Foley: US Military Launched Secret Rescue Operation in Syria for Journalist, Other Americans - ABC News
"U.S. special operations forces early this summer launched a secret, major rescue operation in Syria to save James Foley and a number of Americans held by the extremist group ISIS, but the mission failed because the hostages weren’t there, senior administration officials told ABC News today.
President Obama authorized the “substantial and complex” rescue operation after the officials said a “broad collection of intelligence” led the U.S. to believe the hostages were being held in a specific location in the embattled Middle Eastern nation.
When “several dozen” U.S. special operation members landed in Syria, however, they were met with gunfire and “while on site, it became apparent the hostages were not there,” one of the officials said. The special operators engaged in a firefight in which ISIS suffered “a good number” casualties, the official said, while the American forces suffered only a single minor injury.
The American forces were able to get back on helicopters and escape"
Impact, spreading the message, employment for one of the ISIS members abilities or just utilising the facilities that the US left behind in their haste to meet a political promise made by the current POTUS.Originally Posted by raycarey
Alleged non combatant. Did ISIS hold a trial and display incriminating evidence created by the "non combatant" to show his terrorist tendencies? Does MI5, CIA have a file on the "non combatant" and is it public? Maybe they should build a wire prison on a convenient island and terrorise the incarcerated every week for multiple years. Yes much more civilised.Originally Posted by Mr Earl

Yet taking out a dozen guys with a bomb is ok even though there are bits

One pussy-hole murderer who doesn't even have the balls to show his face.
Incidentally, The Gents comment about it being difficult to cut off someones head if they oppose rings true.
Who here would sit on their knees staring into the camera waiting to get beheaded?
Personally I would have been headbutting the kvnt down the sand dune while biting his face off.
First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.
i was thinking this too....ISIL are alleged to be such bad asses (worse than AQ!!!), why doesn't he show his face? perhaps he's got family in the UK?Originally Posted by Albert Shagnastier

Hmmmm.
Propaganda bullshit
i think you've misunderstood part of my post---due to my being unclear. it's the western govts and media that keep telling us that ISIL are "worse than AQ".....almost as if it's a marketing campaign they're pushing.
but i do find some of the choices these ISIL guys are making to be interesting.....not showing the most gruesome scenes from the beheading, covering their faces, etc...

IMO it definitely shouldn't be ruled out as a possibility.Originally Posted by Albert Shagnastier
Watching this kind of brutality, & reading about the brutality of Muslims hundreds of years back, makes me wonder what many countries' Immigration Officers & past politicians must be thinking.
"What the hell have we let ourselves into?"
To think that these monsters may one day just hop on a plane & 'go home' - like nothing has happened - seems amazing. I hope that each & every one of these murderers is brought to book & dispatched post-haste, by their present host countries.
