Nightmare as Jet Pilot's Arm Falls Off During Landing...

Pilot's arm detaches mid-flight, causing 'nightmare' landing in Belfast

A pilot has lost control of a passenger plane after his prosthetic arm became detached during landing.

The Flybe plane was coming into land at Belfast City Airport from Birmingham in the UK.

Dark, gusty conditions and time constraints meant that the pilot had to continue to guide the plane into landing with one hand, without the help of his co-pilot.

After a regular landing, the plane bounced and then hit the tarmac really heavily, resulting in a ‘nightmare landing’ for the crew and 47 passengers aboard, according to the Irish Mirror.

The co-pilot was then able to reduce the speed and bring the aircraft to a halt.

According to a BBC news report, there were no injuries and the plane was not damaged.

The 46-year-old pilot had checked that his prosthetic arm was attached correctly before coming in to land.

During the manual landing he began the ‘flare’ manoeuvre, which is conducted just before touchdown, when his limb became detached, depriving him control of the aircraft.

In a statement Flybe, said the senior captain, who had more than 8000 hours of flying experience, was a ‘most experienced and trusted pilot’ and the safety of his crew and passengers had not been compromised in any way.

Flybe’s director of flight operations and safety said it was proud to be an equal opportunity employer, and the safety of passengers and crew was paramount.

After an internal investigation, Flybe said safety checks had been implemented to ‘ensure this type of incident could not happen again’.

The pilot was not disciplined after the scare.

They must be joking, one armed pilot and a copilot that doesn't know how to fly the plane and safety is paramount.

    Um, yes it fucking was.

Perhaps they could make a condition of employment that you must have all natural, permanently attached limbs FFS.
What next? Blind pilots? After all, can't be seen to discriminate can we.

What a rewarding and somehow life enriching experience it is to learn that Flybe is fulfilling its Equal Opportunity obligations at the evident expense of their passengers' personal safety.

Never mind that this man's disability nearly caused a disaster. Never mind that in their wisdom an airline employed him to fly a fucking airplane in the full knowledge that one of his fucking arms was made of plastic and not permanently attached to his body.

As long as some fucking bean counter can tick a box which shows the airline has complied with the stark raving bonkers principle that people should be employed, not on their abilities, but because of their fucking social needs.

Clearly, Flybe will not have my custom.

Cranking one off with a prosthetic arm would be tops!

Would feel like somebody else was doing it!

Have your balls just dropped, or something? Your preoccupation with onanism is really quite puerile.

Several years ago I went after a job on a ship where I had to apply through an agency. The agency requested a full body photo to show I had all limbs due to the nature of the work!! I wonder if that has changed, somehow doubt it.

Yes but there comes a time in the landing stages when there simply isn't time.

Airlines admit their cockpits are full of weird shit

    14-08-14

AIRLINES have urged passengers not to pry into what happens inside the cockpit once the door is closed.

As it emerged a Flybe pilot landed his plane after his false arm came loose, the airlines said that cockpits are ‘magical places beyond the reach of international law’.

A source at a major British carrier said: “We have one pilot who refuses to fly without his pet chickens.

“Most of the chickens just hop around the inside cockpit, treading on important buttons and switching the engines on and off.

“But there’s one chicken that spends the entire flight with its face pressed up against the windscreen.”

Another source said: “We’ve got a flight crew that puts on full scuba gear and then pumps the cockpit full of shaving foam.

“And another one of our pilots waits until he is at cruising altitude and then sets up a charcoal barbecue. He says the cabin pressure gives the marinade a bit more ‘oomph’.”

The source added: “You’re right to be worried. The ‘automatic pilot’ is more of a marketing thing rather than an actual thing

Good thing it wasn't false legs that fell off.

I'll give the reports as much credit as that OP photo being a Dash-8....

No-one noticed and the incident was reported by the Captain, which says a lot more about this than a headline implying some nightmare scenario.

So his arm slipped off the controls...big deal.

The worrying thing is Paddy o Ryan and his flying circus is gonna be looking at the weight saving implications to save fuel by employing pilots with balsa wood arms and legs .

The pic is a bit misleading as he was only flying a little twin prop plane with around 40 odd people in it . Mabe he used to start these old beasts by hand and had an unfortunate incident in the past .

Still could have been worse , imagine that coming off as your pulling the guts outa the joystick trying to get that mother up off the ground with a load of club 18 to 30 stone hen partygoers in the back on the way to Ibiza
I'm proud of my 38" waist , also proud I have never done drugs
