A 95-YEAR-old World War II veteran was killed after repeatedly being shot with beanbag rounds by Chicago police attempting to drag him to hospital, a court has been told.

The stepdaughter of John Wrana Jr has filed a lawsuit against the six officers involved in the incident which took place in July last year.
The Courthouse News Service reports officers had been summoned via a 911 call to the Park Forest Assisted Living Center to help remove Wrana after he refused to be taken to hospital for treatment for a urinary tract infection.
The complaint states the officers had been unable to persuade the veteran to leave his personal room. After conferring in the hall, the six men decided to take him by force.
In the fraca that resulted, “five rounds of bean bag cartridges from a 12 gauge shotgun within a distance of approximately only six to eight feet from Mr Wrana, far less than the distance allowed for discharging that shotgun, and, consequently, savagely wounding and killing Mr Wrana,” the court document reads.
Police officials say Wrana brandished “a cane or knife”, which elicited the officer’s response.
The bean bag cartridges travel at approximately 190 miles an hour, and the manufacturer warns that "shots to the head, neck thorax, heart or spine can result in fatal injury," according to the complaint.

His stepdaughter says the elderly man needed a cane to walk or stand up.
The 95-year-old man was then reportedly handcuffed, photographed and further restrained before being transported to hospital. He reportedly bled to death.
The Cook County Medical Examiner ruled that Mr Wrana’s death “was a homicide caused by blunt force trauma to his abdomen as a result of shots fired from a bean bag shotgun,” the suit says.
The lawsuit is seeking punitive damages for excessive force, wrongful death and violation of due process.

n officer was charged this morning in the police killing of 95-year-old John Wrana, the World War II veteran who was fatally shot with beanbag rounds in his apartment at a south suburban senior facility last year.

Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez’s office said patrolman Craig Taylor, 43, was charged with one count of reckless conduct, a Class 4 felony. Taylor has been with the Park Forest Police Department since January, 2004.

If convicted, Taylor faces a sentence ranging between probation and three years in prison. No other officers have been charged in the case.

How it went down..................


Wrana, who had served with the U.S. Army Air Corps in Burma during World War II, was just weeks shy of his 96th birthday when the confrontation occurred with police at the Victory Centre assisted-living center in July 2013.

The elderly man had refused medical treatment for a urinary tract infection, and reportedly became belligerent. Police who were called to the scene fired a Taser that failed to hit Wrana, and then shot him with bean-bag rounds fired from a shotgun. He died hours later of internal bleeding, authorities said.

Though Wrana was infirm and needed a walker or a cane to get around, police considered him armed and dangerous. They said he brandished a cane, a knife and a 2-foot-long metal shoehorn that some officers initially took for a machete.

Police responded with a Taser, a riot shield, a shotgun with beanbag rounds and one drawn handgun when they rushed him. An Illinois State Police inquiry of the case determined that Taylor fired the 12-gauge Mossberg police shotgun five times at Wrana.

Park Forest police used shotgun beanbag rounds from Combined Tactical Systems Inc. The rounds travel up to 190 mph, and manufacturer’s guidelines recommend that shooter be between 21 and 50 feet from the target. An independent pathologist who studied the original autopsy report said that it appeared Wrana had at least four impact wounds to his abdomen.

Despite Wrana being inside his living unit alone with his front door closed, prosecutors said, "the officers did not make any attempt to talk with Wrana and instead formulated a plan within a few minutes of their arrival to re-enter the apartment in force and secure Wrana with a ballistic shield, a Taser, a less-lethal shotgun, and a loaded-firearm.”

Prosecutors said in a court document that when Wrana moved toward officers and refusing to drop his knife, Taylor "opened fire upon Wrana with the shotgun shooting one beanbag round at Wrana and paused for a moment before firing four more rounds in succession with all of the shots coming within just a few seconds.”

Wrana dropped the knife after Taylor fired the fifth and final time, prosecutors said. Taylor was 6 to 8 feet away from Wrana when he fired the shots, prosecutors said, even though he was trained to fire the shotgun at a minimum of 15 feet.

After the fifth shot, Wrana dropped the knife but remained standing, prosecutors said. At that time, the police commander on the scene used the riot shield to knock Wrana to the floor, where other officers handcuffed him, prosecutors said. He died later at a hospital.

Of course ^ yes, but what kind of world sends six heavily armed cops against an old man who doesn't want to go to the doctor today??? What legal basis is there for them to beak into his house and drag him to hospital??

It's fucking insane..more so on the belated token charge that took 8 months to appear.
The family is sueing for 5 mill. I'd be adding a few zeros to that and including the company that manages the apartments.

I would have thought that a nice young lady could have sorted this with a sneaky glance down her blouse a cookie, and nice cup of tea.

When my grandfather, a veteran of WW1 and WW2, was 95, if he didn't want to do something right then, that was that - he wasn't going to do it. He would decide to go do it in his own time, or could eventually be talked into it.

These are obviously bullshit lies. The man was in an assisted living facility he would not have had access to a butcher knife. This type of thing happens all the time in the US. As an American I wish I could tell you that it wasn't true but it is. The type of people who are recruited to become cops are entirely the wrong people. In the US returning combat veterans get first dibs at police jobs. Many of them have PTSD and are pumped up on steroids.

all they get is 'we apoligise' and that it was an isolated incident
but a week later one hears of another 'isolated' incident which would make your hair stand on end.

I thought at that sort of age they still had rights, like the right to refuse non-critical treatment.

^With my grandfather, you had the right to piss off and quit bothering him.

Unfortunately the same thing is happening more than it should in Australia, too. Really VERY shameful.

This kind of thing just makes me sick to my stomach. You would think a 43 year old would know enough about life to give a 95 year old a break. No respect for the rights of this elderly gent at all.

If they had any true consideration for this man's safety, even if they felt threatened, they could have just confined him to his room to let him cool down.

For the record, I can think of no excuse for six cops shooting a 95 year old man who refused treatment and I hope they are swiftly brought to justice.
