Four Years of Austerity in 40 Pictures

This coming May will mark four years since the European Commission, the European Central Bank, and the International Monetary Fund took control of the Greek economy. Although massively important, it’s an anniversary not many people are going to celebrate.

As more of a memento than a celebration, photographer Dimitris Michalakis has put together a selection of 40 photographs that he’s taken over the past four years. The series depicts the social impact of austerity in Greece, and serves as a snapshot into almost half a decade dominated by headlines about social polarity, debt, and economic crisis.

greece, or rather its people, are now paying the price for years of government mismanagement by cooking the books, abusing subsidies, tax avoidance and corrupt practices at the expense of other european countries.

    serves them right.

a large proportion of the people themselves were not averse to trousering money that they didnt deserve. they saw the eu as a way of gaining access to massive handouts easily obtained by using fraudulent accounting techniques.

these things always catch up with you in the end.

Actually, here are the EU subsidies for 2009, before Greece cracked. Say 1,000 Euro per capita in this year. That didn't do much in encouraging excessive consumption, wouldn't you agree?

Now each capita is indebted with tens of thousands of Euro to the EU and other money changers, and there appears to be a proportionality issue.

    Yes, well aware of that.

What I was saying was Thai govt has not screwed other countries... not making others pay for her, her debt and welfare. That is what half of southern europe does.

But I am aware and know where Thailand was.

Thailand did not receive aid like european countries have received from other european countries. IMF funded Thailand something less than USD20bn, which Thailand paid back. Having a look at your wikipedia link,

"By 2001, Thailand's economy had recovered. The increasing tax revenues allowed the country to balance its budget and repay its debts to the IMF in 2003, four years ahead of schedule"

In contrast, europeans seem not to be planning to pay back their debt. Yes, that is my opinion and I believe I am wrong when they have paid it back.

At the time, Thailand had acquired a burden of foreign debt that made the country effectively bankrupt even before the collapse of its currency. [1]

Now I am starting to think You don't know the background or what happened after.

Fact remains Thailand paid back the debt in few years, ahead of schedule. Euro states like Greece have something like 50 year plans and they are already missing payments and demand more money, which does not come from IMF but from individual countries in northern europe who are struggling to keep their hospitals running in this euro-made depression. All this to keep the euro alive and ouzo drinks flowing and carefree life intact in southern europe.

I feel it is an insult to Thailand to compare her with euros.

    Perhaps you have misread something?
