Kiwis are lucky as they have an obviously good alternative i.e. the silver fern on a black background.

Aussies don't have such an obvious alternative I don't think.

Could just replace the UJ with the coat of arms but I fear any revision could end up getting hijacked by the PC brigade in which case I would rather stick with the original.

Definitely no dots or red black and yellow.

Australia's flag should be the same (southern cross on a blue backround) but without the Union Jack.
Perhaps in its place the Australian coat of arms or a kangaroo wearing sunglasses reclining on golden sand under a palm tree sucking on a stubbie of fourex)

So no recognition of Aboriginal history at all?

Unfortunately the Eureka flag has already been hijacked by neo-nazis.

NZ has a second flag now

The national Maori flag - Tino Rangatiratanga
but that one wouldn't get everyone's support

Any other country have a black-background flag?
The black with silver fern is easily recognised through the sporting world, Olympic team uniforms etc, but I'm not so keen on what could be a drab looking grey-on-black
and would it have to have an adidas logo too, since they have the rights for All Blacks and Netball NZ uniforms?

You're all closer to the Chokes anyway, I'd go for a red flag with yellow stars to show how easily you'll bend over when they come knocking. Just put one or two sheep's arses on it so they know who's who.

Question for you Aussies and Kiwis. Why should Aussies change their flag if NZ does?

How interesting, you do not think modern Australia has been shaped by our histroy ?

I would keep it, or at least some representation of our colonial history.

Not really the place for a coat of arms.

We learn all about the Brits in school. We or at least I certainly don't identify them, I don;t have a burning need to watch eastenders and coronation street to get in touch with my roots. And a very large part of the population is now modern immigrant born rather than settler.
Additionally, much of our connection with britain is negative, Rum Rebellion, Eureka Stockade, Gallipoli, their dumping of the commonwealth to join the common market, they are in the EU now, their basically wogs.

So here we go, this would look fantastic at the cricket...

All the suggested flags for NZ and Aus are fuking hideous. Right down there with banana republic flags.

Taking out the Union Jack is just childish bullshit driven by old Irish republicans and Scottish whinging nationalists. A country that tries to deny, or hide it's past has an uncertain future.

Accept the colonial past for what it was and stop whinging......FFS you're getting almost as bad as the British themselves.....

I think it would be better to steer clear of human cultural symbology as it is a contentious issue when there is a small indigenous population and the nation was built by colonial occupation. Symbology from the world of nature would be more neutral.

I suppose it is kind of ironic in that the more connected the world becomes, the more insular and sepratist the people become. Scottish separation, basque/spanish, thai/south, canadian/quebequiois, the list is endless...

To be fair, I don't think that the world is more separatist. Think it's always been this way.

^ The innertubes just let you be better at being separatist than say, the printing press did.

Yes we do. The Eureka flag.

Haven't seen a proposed design that I like as yet.

    .
    With controversial contemporary meaning.

Sorry, that does not represent all Australians, how quaint and simplistic it would be if it did eh?
