Oscar Pistorius apologises for killing Reeva Steenkamp

Oscar Pistorius: "I'm scared to sleep... I have terrible nightmares"

An emotional Oscar Pistorius has started his testimony at his murder trial by apologising to the family of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

In a trembling voice, he said he was "trying to protect" her and said he could not imagine their pain.

Mr Pistorius said he suffered "terrible nightmares" and often woke up smelling Ms Steenkamp's blood.

Prosecutors say he killed her in February 2013 after an argument. He says he mistook her for an intruder.

The Paralympic athlete told Ms Steenkamp's relatives that there "hasn't been a moment since this tragedy happened that I haven't thought about your family".

"I wake up every morning and you're the first people I think of, the first people I pray for. I can't imagine the pain and the sorrow and the emptiness that I've caused you and your family.

"I was simply trying to protect Reeva. I can promise that when she went to bed that night she felt loved.

"I've tried to put my words on paper many, many times to write to you. But no words will ever suffice."

In the packed Pretoria courtroom, Ms Steenkamp's mother, June, sat stony-faced while he spoke

Reeva Steenkamp's mother, June, remained impassive during Mr Pistorius' testimony

Mr Pistorius said he is taking anti-depressants and sleeping pills.

"I'm scared to sleep, I have terrible nightmares, I can smell blood and wake up terrified," he said.

He added that he never wanted to handle a gun again.

The trial in Pretoria was delayed for a week after one of the assessors assisting the judge fell ill.

Under South African law, there is no jury system and two assessors, normally lawyers or retired magistrates, help the judge reach a decision in serious cases.

Defence lawyer Barry Roux said he will call 14 to 17 witnesses in his case to testify on "ballistics, urine emptying, damage to the toilet door, sound, and disability and vulnerability."

    'Inexact science'

Earlier, the athlete's defence team called on pathologist Jan Botha as its first witness.

Mr Botha, a private pathologist who said he has carried out about 25,000 autopsies, was asked about gastric emptying and calculating Ms Steenkamp's time of death.

Earlier in the trial, the state called forensic pathologist Gert Saayman who said vegetable matter in Ms Steenkamp's stomach suggested she had eaten around two hours prior to her death, which contradicted Mr Pistorius' version of events.

Mr Botha disputed this conclusion, saying that determining the time of death through gastric emptying is guesswork, calling it a "highly controversial and inexact science".

Prosecutor Gerrie Nel was fierce in his cross-examination of Mr Botha and sought to suggest that his evidence was unreliable since he did not attend Ms Steenkamp's autopsy and worked from photographs

Mr Pistorius sobbed loudly in court as Ms Steenkamp's injuries were described

The pathologist accepted that he was "not a ballistician" after appearing to contradict the state's account of the sequence of shots that killed Ms Steenkamp.

But he insisted he was not there to "win the case for either the defence or the prosecution" after being accused by Mr Nel of making his findings fit with the defence case.

"I'm here to assist the court," Mr Botha said.

Oscar Pistorius recounts moment of killing

South African athlete Oscar Pistorius has described the moment he fired the shots which killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in his home.

He told his trial in Pretoria he had heard noises from the toilet and thought an intruder was coming out.

"Before I knew it, I had fired four shots at the door," he said.

The trial of the athlete, who could face life imprisonment if convicted of murder, was adjourned until Wednesday after he broke down crying.

    In court

    Pumza Fihlani BBC News, Pretoria

Shortly before Oscar Pistorius described in court how he had shot Reeva Steenkamp, his lawyer asked him to demonstrate his height without his prosthetic legs.

Gasps were heard in the overflow courtroom as he slowly walked on his stumps over to the mock-up of the toilet door. His confident demeanour changed - on his stumps he seemed self-conscious. Very few people have seen him like his and it is not an image visible to the world as his testimony is not being televised.

The court heard for the first time that the athlete had spoken to Ms Steenkamp shortly after waking up, to bring in some fans from the balcony. She had asked if he was having trouble sleeping. Another revelation was how he had whispered to her to get down and phone the police after hearing the sound in the bathroom - but there was no mention of her replying.

He also did not mention having an argument with his girlfriend that night, rather describing a quiet, couple's night in. The prosecution argues that he killed her in a fit of rage and neighbours have testified to hearing "loud voices" prior to the four shots Mr Pistorius fired.

The 27-year-old double amputee denies deliberately shooting Ms Steenkamp on Valentine's Day last year.

On his first day on the stand, on Monday, he made a tearful apology to Ms Steenkamp's family.

The prosecution alleges that Mr Pistorius killed his girlfriend after an argument with her

    'She wasn't breathing'

In the early hours of 14 February 2013, he said he had got up from bed to bring in some fans he had left outside, in order to cool his bedroom.

When he heard a window opening in the bathroom, he said, he thought there was a burglar trying to get in.

Wanting to protect Ms Steenkamp, who was not sleeping, he had gone to get his gun in the dark.

"I whispered to Reeva to get down and phone the police," he said.

He said he then went into the passage without his prosthetic legs and, overcome with fear, started screaming, and shouted for Ms Steenkamp to get to the floor.

Members of the public followed the testimony from the gallery

A bucket was put in the dock in case Mr Pistorius vomited as he testified

Mr Pistorius is seen here leaving court on Tuesday

The toilet door slammed, reconfirming his belief there was a person or people in the bathroom, the athlete said.

"I heard a noise from inside the toilet, what I perceived to be someone coming out of the toilet," he said tearfully. At that point, he shot at the door.

After the shooting, Mr Pistorius said he had smashed in a door panel to get into the toilet, where he discovered what he had done.

"Whilst I leant over the partition to get in, I saw the key, so I took it and I unlocked the door, and I flung the door open, and I threw it open," he said, sobbing.

"And I sat over Reeva and I cried... and um, I don't know how long... I don't know how long I was there for... She wasn't breathing."

As the athlete broke down, the judge adjourned the trial.

    Valentine's gifts

Earlier, the athlete described how the couple had spent a quiet evening together on 13 February, Ms Steenkamp doing some yoga as he spoke to his cousin on the phone.

He had then watched TV in bed with his head resting on her stomach and she would occasionally show him photos of cars she was looking at on her phone, he said.

He said that they had bought Valentine's Day gifts for each other. He had bought her a bracelet and they had been due to go the jewellers' to collect it the next day, he said.

Ms Steenkamp, a 29-year-old model, reality TV celebrity and law graduate, was hit by at least three bullets while in the toilet cubicle of Mr Pistorius's home in Pretoria.

Known as the Blade Runner, Mr Pistorius holds six Paralympic medals and competed in the 2012 Olympic Games.

There are no juries at trials in South Africa, and his fate will ultimately be decided by the judge, assisted by two assessors.

Even if he is acquitted, South African law stipulates that the court must consider the separate, lesser charge of culpable homicide, or manslaughter.

If convicted on this charge, he could face between six and 15 years in prison.

Mr Pistorius also faces charges of illegally firing a gun in public and of illegally possessing ammunition, which he denies

If the prosecutor keeps up his Perry Mason act and ridiculous nit-picking questions about how many electric fans were on and where they were plugged in, I'd vote to let Pistorius off.

Oscar Pistorius trial: Anguish at Reeva Steenkamp photo

Oscar Pistorius became distraught as he was shown a graphic photo of his dead girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp by the prosecution at his murder trial.

"It's time that you look at it," chief prosecutor Gerrie Nel said, presenting the photo at the start of the first day of cross-examination.

The South African athlete, who denies murdering Ms Steenkamp, insisted he had made a "mistake".

He says he accidentally killed her after mistaking her for an intruder.

He told the court on Wednesday: "I made a mistake. My mistake was that I took Reeva's life."

Prosecutors say Mr Pistorius intentionally killed Ms Steenkamp on 14 February last year by firing a gun through a bathroom door at her after a row at his Pretoria home

The 27-year-old Olympic and Paralympic sprinter, who is a double amputee, faces life imprisonment if convicted of murdering the 29-year-old model, reality TV celebrity and law graduate.

Following legal arguments on Wednesday morning, Mr Nel showed video footage of the athlete at a gun range shooting a watermelon.

Mr Nel then said the watermelon had exploded in the same way as Ms Steenkamp's head - and showed the graphic photo. He asked Mr Pistorius to look at it and take responsibility for his actions.

An emotional Mr Pistorius turned away from the image on a monitor screen and said: "I've taken responsibility… but I will not look at a picture where I am tormented by what I saw and felt that night... I remember. I don't have to look at a picture, I was there.''

Reeva Steenkamp's mother June was comforted by family lawyer Dup de Bruyn when a graphic photo of her daughter was shown

Aimee Pistorius became emotional as s she listened to her brother on the stand

After an adjournment to allow Mr Pistorius to compose himself, Mr Nel sought to highlight what he said were inconsistencies in the athlete's statements, questioning his claims that police had tampered with items in his home after the shooting.

"I am not pleading not guilty because the scene was contaminated," Mr Pistorius countered. "I am pleading not guilty because what I'm accused of didn't happen."

The BBC's Andrew Harding, who was in court in Pretoria, says in the opening moments of cross examination, Mr Nel showed the highly combative style Mr Pistorius can now expect from him in the coming days.

    • No stranger to high-profile cases - prosecuted former police boss Jackie Selebi on corruption charges, calling him an "arrogant liar" during cross-examination
    • Widely praised for his meticulous attention to detail
Earlier, while being questioned by his lawyer Barry Roux, Mr Pistorius told the court he had tried to revive Ms Steenkamp, who was hit by three of four pistol rounds he fired through the door.

"I checked to see if she was breathing and she wasn't," he said. "I could feel the blood was running down on me."

He said he had managed to carry Ms Steenkamp downstairs, where neighbours had tried to administer first aid before paramedics arrived.

"The paramedics arrived. They asked for some space to work so I stood up," Mr Pistorius said. "Reeva had already died whilst I was holding her, before the ambulance arrived, so I knew there was nothing they could do for her."

Before Mr Roux ended his questioning, he asked Mr Pistorius if he had intentionally killed Ms Steenkamp.

"I did not intend to kill Reeva or anybody else for that matter," he replied.

If Mr Pistorius is acquitted of murder, South African law stipulates that the court must consider the separate, lesser charge of culpable homicide, or manslaughter, for which he could receive between six and 15 years in prison.

Mr Pistorius also faces charges of illegally firing a gun in public and of illegally possessing ammunition, both of which he denies.

I still fail to see how a person LOCKED in a bathroom can be an immediate threat / danger to you and as such would require you to shoot them several times through the said LOCKED door. Or am I missing something here ?
If you really were in fear as is being suggested wouldn't your main concern be for the safety of your defenceless little lady ? And if you couldn't find the said little lady might it suggest to you that it might just be her in the bathroom ?
    The whole thing stinks.

Oscar Pistorius: I did not pick on Reeva Steenkamp

Live coverage of the Oscar Pistorius murder trial. Warning - may contain graphic testimony

    Pistorius trial

South African athlete Oscar Pistorius has denied "picking on" his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, as his cross-examination continues.

He was commenting on a mobile phone message Ms Steenkamp had sent him.

The Paralympian also denied ever shouting at her and regretted never telling Ms Steenkamp he loved her.

Mr Pistorius denies murdering his girlfriend, saying he accidentally killed her after mistaking her for an intruder.

Prosecutors say Mr Pistorius intentionally killed Ms Steenkamp on 14 February last year by firing a gun through a bathroom door at her after a row at his Pretoria home.

I don't know whether he's acting” - June Steenkamp Reeva's mother, on Oscar Pistorius

The 27-year-old Olympic and Paralympic sprinter, who is a double amputee, faces life imprisonment if convicted of murdering the 29-year-old model, reality TV celebrity and law graduate.

As the cross-examination resumed, chief prosecutor Gerrie Nel suggested that Mr Pistorius should have apologised to Ms Steenkamp's family in private, rather than in court as he opened his defence on Monday.

The athlete replied that he had not had the opportunity and had been unable to find the correct words.

When pressed, he said he apologised for "taking the life of" Ms Steenkamp.

In an interview with the UK's Daily Mirror newspaper, her mother, June, said the apology "left me unmoved. I knew it was coming".

She said: "He has been very dramatic, the vomiting and crying... I don't know whether he's acting."

In court, Mrs Steenkamp shook her head as Mr Pistorius was taken through several Whatsapp messages, which Ms Steenkamp had sent.

Reeva Steenkamp's mother, June, again followed Mr Pistorius' testimony closely

In one, she wrote: "You have picked on me incessantly since we got back from Cape Town."

Asked to comment, Mr Pistorius said: "I don't feel like I picked on her incessantly - maybe we were having a rough time in our relationship."

Mr Nel, known as the "bull terrier" in South Africa for his fierce questioning, also suggested that Mr Pistorius was concerned about himself during their relationship.

    • Widely praised for his meticulous attention to detail
"It was all about you Mr Pistorius," he said, repeatedly.

As well as denying ever shouting or screaming at Ms Steenkamp, the athlete said he had never shouted at a previous girlfriend, Sam Taylor, as she had testified earlier in the trial.

On Wednesday's dramatic first day of questioning by Mr Nel, the South African athlete became distraught as he was shown a graphic photo of Ms Steenkamp after her death.

An emotional Mr Pistorius turned away from the image on a monitor screen and said: "I've taken responsibility… but I will not look at a picture where I am tormented by what I saw and felt that night... I remember. I don't have to look at a picture, I was there.''

Totally agree. It's really quite an absurd story. If you think there is an "intruder" in your bathroom with the door locked and you are armed, the first thing you would do is make sure that the person in the bathroom is not someone who is supposed to be there.....by challenging them to identify themselves....and you would check to make sure your GF was safe before doing anything.

You do not just open up and fire four shots (not just one....four) through the door at a target you can't identify. That is patently ridiculous and anybody with more that five minutes of firearms instruction does not fire blindly at an unidentified target. Oscar had quite a bit of firearms training apparently. At the very least he is guilty of criminal negligence causing death. Seems likely he was just in an uncontrolled rage over something that came up with his GF....and he had a bit of previous form regarding reckless use of a firearm.

His remorse in no doubt quite genuine but his behaviour was totally reckless and inexcusable.

My guess is that he get's cleared of the murder charge - as it's hard to argue against the fact that he is as thick as fuck, but
gets a few years for mansalughter .
No jury here , so we have to second guess the judge,

It's a strange design for a house - assuming it's to scale -the bed is bigger than the carsey and shower combined , and what is that thing at the front right ? some kind of private sink ?
it looks like an experiment for white mice , rather than a house ...

it would be a more interesting case if reeva steenkamp had shot through the bog wall with an AK47 and nailed oscar pistorius on the bed , for having a sneaky look at her phone .
