Marijuana Overdoses Kill 37 in Colorado On First Day of Legalization

Colorado is reconsidering its decision to legalize recreational pot following the deaths of dozens due to marijuana overdoses.

According to a report in the Rocky Mountain News, 37 people were killed across the state on Jan. 1, the first day the drug became legal for all adults to purchase. Several more are clinging onto life in local emergency rooms and are not expected to survive.

"It's complete chaos here," says Dr. Jack Shepard, chief of surgery at St. Luke's Medical Center in Denver. "I've put five college students in body bags since breakfast and more are arriving every minute.
"We are seeing cardiac arrests, hypospadias, acquired trimethylaminuria and multiple organ failures. By next week the death toll could go as high as 200, maybe 300. Someone needs to step in and stop this madness. My god, why did we legalize marijuana? What were we thinking?"

    Rainin' Fire in the Sky

Colorado and Washington state approved the sale of marijuana for recreational use in November though statewide ballot measures. Under the new policies pot is legal for adult use, regulated like alcohol and heavily taxed.

One of the principal arguments of legalization advocates was that cannabis has long been considered safer than alcohol and tobacco and was not thought not to cause overdose.

But a brave minority tried to warn Coloradans of the drug's dangers.

"We told everyone this would happen," says Peter Swindon, president and CEO of local brewer MolsonCoors. "Marijuana is a deadly hardcore drug that causes addiction and destroys lives.

"When was the last time you heard of someone overdosing on beer? All these pro-marijuana groups should be ashamed of themselves. The victims' blood is on their hands."

One of the those victims was 29-year-old Jesse Bruce Pinkman, a former methamphetamine dealer from Albuquerque who had recently moved to Boulder to establish a legal marijuana dispensary.

Pinkman was partying with friends when he suffered several seizures and a massive heart attack which ultimately proved to be fatal. Toxicology reports revealed that marijuana was the only drug present in his system.

"This is just a terrible tragedy," says his friend Peter. "Jesse was trying to go legit and now this happens? I guess drugs really are as dangerous as they say."

Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, who opposed the ballot initiative that legalized the drug, says he will call a special legislative session to try and overturn the new law.

"We can't sit idly by and allow this slaughter to continue," he said during a press conference Thursday.

I find the times i smoke dope, which are very rare, i get really stoned and actually don't like it much. I can manage my alcohol intake, but to be stoned is not for me anymore. Not that i wouldn't say no to a big fat doobie.....

When many of those around me needed pills to sleep, chill out, etc, a nice toke at the end of the day was all I ever needed to relax and get a good nights sleep. Apparently, that means I was a druggie and them not.

Try talking about the benefits of brown sugar - that makes you a "junkie" (even worse then a "druggie")
    (to them that is)

Square head non-smokers, DO NOT, I REPEAT, do not listen to any of the ganga music posted in this thread. It may cause you to smoke illicit herbs that have been on our earth since since before the dawn of Babylon thinkers. And if you smoke these natural illicit herbs they will cause you to rebel against the mainstream and think abstractly giving you a different outlook on many serious life issues.

Legalize it - don't criticize it
Legalize it and i will advertise it

    Some call it tampee
    Some call it the weed
    Some call it Marijuana
Some of them call it Ganja

Legalize it - don't criticize it
Legalize it and i will advertise it

    Singer smoke it
    And players of instruments too
    Legalize it, yeah, yeah
That's the best thing you can do
    Doctors smoke it
    Nurses smoke it
    Judges smoke it
    Even the lawyers too

Legalize it - don't criticize it
Legalize it and i will advertise it

    It's good for the flu
    It's good for asthma
    Good for tuberculosis
    Even umara composis

Legalize it - don't criticize it
Legalize it and i will advertise it

    Bird eat it
    And they leave it
    Fowls eat it
Goats love to play with it.

^And that right there is an absolute fact. Everything in moderation. Abuse is abuse no matter if alcohol, prescription drugs, vitamins, pot, over eating, endless days of work, etc.

    Its all about balance.

I am looking forward to see how this will be addressed by companies who have drug testing. I suspect companies can have their own policies and all companies are an "at will" so I see some rough controversial roads ahead. Again only the attorney's will rake in the $$$$.

I say its alright by me. I enjoy a Vap hit from time to time.

I will say though, the same laws for any "altered states" driving of a motor vehicle should be enforced to the fullest extent of the law. That applies to any and all forms of media people use to get high. There should be zero tolerance.

What might be the biggest consequence of the legalization of cannabis in the USA is the billions of dollars that will eventually be taken away from the Mexican drug cartels. The Sinaloa drug cartel wouldn't think twice about decapitating someone who sold a single bag of pot on their turf and now you have entire states legalizing the stuff. Cutting those savages off from the USA market is reason enough to legalize cannabis and other drugs. I imagine that USA law enforcement when looking at the growing power of Mexican cartels would welcome legalization of drugs in general. The Mexican cartels represent a terrorist threat to the USA that may have already surpassed that of the Islamists. How the USA deals with these cartels is a far more important issue than the lifestyles of drug users, who seem to always find a way to get their drugs regardless of the laws.

If you add the economic effect-

Judging from three days on the ground in Denver interviewing experts and reviewing the latest tourism data, Colorado could make anywhere from $100 million to $500 million in extra tourism in the first year alone of newly legal weed.

Over 50 stores are selling pot to any adult over 21, and hundreds more will open. The first weeks saw an almost-religious pilgrimage of thousands of sick people, persecuted potheads and media members who came to make history. But in their wake will be legions more former smokers hitting retirement as well as curious newbies who were already thinking about a Colorado trip. Pot just tipped the scales.

The Fun I Had Buying Marijuana as a Tourist in the Legal Pot Paradise of Colorado | Alternet

I'd say Colorado is ahead of the game.

I am not going to elaborate to much, on the difficulties in developing, finding and agreeing on equipment, to do easy portable reliable "one go" relativity comprehensive drug test on the spot, in countries where Political and Judicial very strict checks and balances for law-enforcement is in place.

Suffice to say independent medical experts have had to test and approve the results, Political commissions have had to debate and evaluate same, and extensive test programmes have had to run their course, finally the Judiciary have agreed that the results, and the Politician/Judiciary/police negotiated procedures for use where legal and correct, and the results true and consistent enough for cases to initially being built on those test results, and then run successful cases where defence challenges on the mechanics and procedures have not been able to shake the results.

Finally a Political decision allowing the Police to then mass purchase said equipment and the Politicians incorporating it into the Justice department budget.

These things takes multiple years to get through the bureaucracy as you know.

That driving and working under the influence of drugs until a very few years ago, was connected with an very very small chance of getting caught is a well established fact, arguing it is pointless, some here say that drug-testing on their workplace is old news etc. etc., yes in certain industries and certain countries sure, but it is still very much the exception from the general rule even in those countries, Police and employers have not had proper legally approved comprehensive drug test equipment to test on the spot, and blood-work was prohibitly expensive, and deemed to invasive for random compulsory checks.

Random systems used at many workplaces has suffered from poor quality and efficiency plus limited coverage.

I posted earlier posts here that this is about to change big time many places in the coming years, and that Colorado and other states can be in for ripe pickings at an unprecedented scale, that is unless they deliberately continue the "don't/can't ask - don't tell" procedures and obstruct law-enforcement and new tech. in the DUI area, to avoid their dope project getting bad publicity.

Work places where employers are serious about safety, and the places where they worry most about liability lawsuits will be much less skittish about implementing the new tech.

So here is the latest news on the subject from my home Country, it is a google translate so it is a bit rubbish but still comprehend-able.

"Significantly more get caught for drug driving

By Lene chef / Sten Jørgensen

With drug meters at hand the police reveals more and more driving under the influence by drugs drivers and expect the number of charges will increase further.

Police - Drug meter traps motorists with a drug- meter traps the police more and more motorists driving in drug intoxicated.

They have probably been there all along , but now they are revealed : the drug affected drivers. Police have namely luck with getting stopped more and more . Last year, police charged nationwide nearly 3,967 motorists for driving drug affected and it is four times more than in previous years .

    - There are no more drugs by drivers on the roads
(probably unlike there will be in Colorado ) , but police have become better at spotting them with a drug- meter , says police commissioner Erik Mather from South Zealand and Lolland Falster police to DR Zealand.

The police expect the number of charges will explode

In their police district , in 2010, snatched ZERO drug affected motorists , last year the figure was 255 !

The tool is a drug- meter , a device which takes a saliva sample for analysis , and then show what drug a driver may have been influenced by .

And with many new narkometre in the police districts , it is expected that the number of motorists caught for being drug affected can explode in 2014.

    - But we can hope that those who smoke cannabis or take amfetamin , now aware that the police have the necessary tools to detect them. It may well get them to think for a moment before sticking out behind the wheel , says Erik Mather .

    "

Let me just add here that for those caught in my Country it is no small matter even if we do have decriminalisation on pot, there is a no tolerance policy on drugs when it comes to DUI, that mean for any positive on the test is by law seen as a BAC of 0,10 - so you lose your licence for 3 years and get a fine of 1/25 of your year salary before tax - for a first time offence, second time and onwards longer licence loss time, bigger fines, and compulsory prison. Third time you also compulsory have your vehicle confiscated.

It's coming to a Country/State near you soon.
