Diplomat arrest: Devyani fell victim to planned conspiracy, alleges father
Uttam Khobragade on Thursday alleged a conspiracy behind the arrest of his diplomat daughter Devyani in New York and said all charges against her were fabricated as he dubbed US Attorney Preet Bharara's remarks after the incident as a "blatant" attack on the Indian judiciary.

"Please take cognisance of Bharara's utterance, that the Indian legal process is meant to 'silence' the maid," Khobragade, a former IAS officer, told reporters here.
"It is a blatant attack on the judiciary of India," he said. "Is it the Prime Minister or is it Preet Bharara who rules India?' he asked.
Khobragade accused the maid of fraud and said all charges must be dropped against Devyani.
"Devyani has been falsely implicated. The entire case is a conspiracy. The FIR against her was fabricated. The US must withdraw charges against my daughter," he demanded.
"I wish to thank the government and media for their role in handling of the case," the father said.
Raising further objections on Bharara's remarks, the father said, "What does his statement say? It says that the Indian courts were trying to silence the witness. That means Indian courts are not here to give justice but to silence the victim. Is it not a serious criminal contempt of court." "I want to make an appeal to the Supreme Court. Please take cognisance of this utterance, which is nothing but scandalising the process of justice in India," he said.
"This statement is clearly reflecting their mental state. It has confirmed the conspiracy. It is tantamount to saying that the Indian government is not protecting their citizens that is why we are protecting them sitting in New York," he said.
"I will try to meet Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh. If this justice is simply not acceptable, then I will go on fast," he said.

UN posting gives Devyani temporary immunity, US says
WASHINGTON: The transfer of diplomat Devyani Khobragade to India's Permanent Mission at the United Nations would grant her full-diplomatic immunity temporarily and protect her from any arrest in the US, but the visa fraud case against her would go uninterrupted, a US official said on Friday.
"For anyone, it would apply for the length of time that they have that diplomatic status. But it doesn't retroactively wipe out past discretions," the state department spokeswoman, Jen Psaki said.
"Receiving diplomatic immunity does not nullify any previously existing criminal charges. Those remain on the books. Nor does obtaining diplomatic immunity protect the diplomat from prosecution indefinitely. It relates to the status of a diplomat's current status for the length of the time of that status," Psaki said.
Diplomatic immunity means, among other things, that a foreign diplomat is not subject to criminal jurisdiction in the United States for the time they are a diplomat, for the time they have that immunity, she said.
She added that,"when immunity is conferred, it does not retroactively take effect at a previous point in time but relates solely to the diplomat's current status."
"So, I think some of the confusion here has been if there is a change in status, does that mean that there is a clean slate from past charges. There's not," Paski said.
After her arrest on visa fraud charges in New York last week, Khobragade was transfered this week from the Indian consulate to its Permanent Mission at the UN.
She also said that the US is yet to get an official request "through the proper channels for accreditation" and hinted the full diplomatic immunity would remain till the time she is posted at the UN.

Diplomat's arrest: Maid faces arrest on arrival in Delhi
NEW DELHI: Sangeeta Richards faces arrest when she arrives in the national capital as the Delhi Police has registered an FIR against her and her husband Philip and a non-bailable warrant against her has been issued by a local court.
Police had registered the FIR on October 9 against the couple on the complaint of US diplomat Devyani Khobragade. Philip had been examined by the police who later got a non bailable warrant against Sangeeta.
"Khobragade's father had approached the Delhi Police with the complaint after which the south district police had taken an opinion from the prosecution on whether a case was made out in the circumstances narrated by him and went ahead with the case after their approval," an officer said.
Philip's mother Agnes Samuels who works as a cook for the New Zealand Embassy was contacted by Times Now wherein she claimed that she had no relations with her son. She claimed that she had left him when he was eight and had no idea about his family. Their flat in south Delhi was found locked on Thursday.
