    Peter O'Toole Dead at 81

The honorary Oscar winner passed away at age 81 after a long illness on Saturday at the Wellington Hospital in London, his agent Steve Kenis reports.

O'Toole was one of the most gifted performers of his generation, rising to fame almost with his starring role in "Lawrence of Arabia" and appearing in a variety of screen classics like, "Beckett," "The Lion in Winter," "My Favorite Year," "The Last Emperor" — and cult favorites like, "What's New Pussycat," "The Ruling Class," and "The Stunt Man."

He was also a larger-than-life personality whose hard drinking, outspoken nature, and romantic escapades were nearly as well known as his movies.

O'Toole, the actor, won international acclaim, and O'Toole, the movie star, was dependable tabloid fodder.

He sure had a nice style about him, a serious kind of bloke. His best for me was The Night of the Generals. He played a loco so well. RIP

Probably the last of the hugely-talented hellraisers, Harris, Reed, Burton, etc.

    RIP. A true star.

Apparently he was never sure which country he was born in. England or the Republic. Apparently his dad got him 2 birth certificates! Brought up in Leeds. No wonder he had a warped sense of humour.

Certainly a very talented a actor.

I read a great story about him and Richard Harris. Apparently they were filming in Ireland, drinking late in a pub and the landlord wanted to close, so they wrote him a cheque on the spot and bought it off him.

The next day they realised they didn't have the money, so they went back and explained themselves. He took it in good stead and remained lifelong friends with them.

He passed away, so they went over to his funeral and as usual got hammered first.

Went to the cemetery, and were sobbing away over the grave when O'Toole realised they had the wrong funeral!

    Yep.
Easily one the of most outstanding film catalogues around.
    Too many awards to mention.

    From the old school.
When actors played characters [and method].

    As briefly mentioned already...
There is something about British actors from that generation......they're numerous and we know them all - some have passed, many still with us.
