A 43-year-old German prisoner who travelled around Portugal in a camper van is now the focus of Scotland Yard's investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann 13 years ago.

Police believe he was in the area where the little girl, then aged three, was last seen in May 2007.

They are appealing for information about the van and the suspect's other vehicle, a Jaguar.

The man transferred it to someone else's name the day after she vanished.

"Someone out there knows a lot more than they're letting on," said DCI Mark Cranwell, who is leading the Met inquiry.

Madeleine went missing from an apartment on a Portuguese holiday resort on the evening of 3 May 2007, while her parents were with friends at a nearby tapas bar. The most recent Met Police investigation, which began in 2011, has cost more than £11m.

The force said it remained a "missing persons" investigation because it doesn't have "definitive evidence" as to whether Madeleine is alive or not.

Scotland Yard said the German authorities had taken the lead on this aspect of the case because the German suspect was in custody in their country.

Detectives said the suspect, who is not being named, was in jail for an "unrelated matter" and had "previous convictions", but they declined to supply more details.

    'Critical' information
An appeal on German television was broadcast this evening at 19:15 BST.

DCI Cranwell said the prisoner, then aged 30, frequented the Algarve between 1995 and 2007, staying for "days upon end" in his camper van and living a "transient lifestyle".

He was in the Praia de Luz area where the McCann family was staying when she disappeared and received a phone call at 7.32pm, which ended at 8.02pm.

Police have released details of the suspect's phone number and the number he dialled saying any information about them could be "critical" to the inquiry.

They also want the person who called the suspect to come forward.

"They're a key witness and we urge them to get in touch," said DCI Cranwell.

"Some people will know the man we're describing today... you may be aware of some of the things he's done," he said.

"He may have confided in you about the disappearance of Madeleine.

"More than 13 years have passed and your loyalties may have changed," he added.

"Now is the time to come forward."

Police said the suspect was one of 600 people that detectives on the inquiry, known as Operation Grange, originally looked at, though he had not been a suspect.

After an appeal in 2017, "significant" fresh information about him was provided.

Since then, Met detectives have carried out "extensive inquiries" in Portugal and Germany in order to gather more details about him.

Scotland Yard said they were trying to "prove or disprove" his involvement in the case and retained an "open mind".

The squareheads have a jailed sex offender (has been named in the German press) as a suspect in her murder and have said that they believe she is dead and that they know how she died.

German public prosecutors have said they are investigating a 43-year-old German man on suspicion of murder and believe that Madeleine McCann, the British girl who disappeared in Portugal in 2007 aged just three, is dead.

"The public prosecutor's office in Braunschweig is investigating a 43-year-old German national on suspicion of murder.

"From this you can see that we assume that the girl is dead," Braunschweig state prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters said.

The UK Metropolitan Police investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann is to close after 11 years, amid fears the German prime suspect will never be charged.

Scotland Yard is understood to be preparing to shut its Operation Grange inquiry later this year. The investigation was set up four years after the 3-year-old girl went missing in Portugal in 2007.

    It is feared there is
insufficient evidence to charge Christian Brueckner, the convicted paedophile and rapist whom German police believe was involved in the child’s disappearance at the resort of Praia da Luz.

A source connected to the UK side of the investigation told The Sun: “The end of the road for Operation Grange is now in sight.

“The team’s work is expected to be completed by autumn. There are currently no plans to take the inquiry any further.”

UK Home Office funding for the inquiry is due to run out on March 31. But, the Met has applied for another grant to fund it through to September.

    It is understood
Madeleine’s parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, both 54, are aware of the plans to wind down the UK investigation.

It will mean the total cost of the inquiry is around £13 million (NZ$24.79m). Although Operation Grange is expected to be closed, the case could be reopened if new evidence emerges.

Madeleine went missing on the evening of May 3 2007, from her holiday apartment at the Ocean Club. Mobile phone analysis suggests
Brueckner, 44, was in the area at the time of Madeleine’s disappearance.

A recent German TV documentary also claimed he had regularly worked at the Algarve resort where the McCann family was staying.

German police named Brueckner as the prime suspect in the case in 2020. But, despite an intense investigation, including the suggestion he told a friend he was involved in the girl’s disappearance, prosecutors have never brought charges against him.

Brueckner is currently in a high-security prison near the city of Bremen in north west Germany where he is serving a seven-year sentence for raping a 73-year-old pensioner in Praia da Luz in 2005.

Last year, Christian Wolters, the German public prosecutor leading the investigation, said his team was “100 per cent” sure Brueckner was involved, but admitted evidence detectives had obtained was circumstantial.

They had appealed to the public for information, but have conceded that without a body, DNA or CCTV they lacked proof of his involvement.

Brueckner has denied any involvement in the girl’s disappearance. The Met Police is still treating the case as a missing person inquiry.

Making the kraut fit the crime was such a shoddy piece of inept policing the Met should have been pilloried for it but as it turns out it was a career posting for a whole team for a decade.

That was the main working hypothesis during the initial enquiry, I had a Portuguese friend who knew a couple of officers on the case. Wasn't there some question about DNA in the boot of a car? I don't remember details now. Anyway the Portuguese tried hard to build a case on that basis but it never came together.

Despite all the unknowns, if the German Public Prosecutor has a team that is "100% certain" then I think we can take their independent view as definitive. We'd all like to see a trial and hear the evidence to be sure. Such a sad business when a child disappears.

The only problem is that there is no evidence, only idle conjecture, baseless supposition and whimsy. Which of course is why there has been no charge or prosecution.

Occam's razor - parents were responsible through neglect or misadventure and concealed the fact by disposing of the body and inventing the abduction. They have lived the lie for so long they probably believe it.

I'd wager he understands it better than you, but it's misapplied here.

Using Occam's razor leads one to conclude that the perverted kraut weirdo who was in the area at the time is the most likely culprit, rather than a couple of well educated medical professionals whose life must have been hell ever since.

In 2019 in the US 79.2% of child deaths were at the hand of one parent or another.

The McCanns account was implausible and points to their culpability in an accidental death scenario that they concealed because an autopsy would have shown the presence of a sedative that they administered to make her more compliant and quiet. Consequences of truth = struck off, prison, loss of child custody of their twins.

The British credulity in swallowing their lies is astounding but then, they are so fucking stupid they voted for Brexit, BoJo, and gold unicorns.

A doped up psycho pensioner-fucking rapist kraut is but a silly bogyman construct only the dull-witted might accept ......

The other 20%? Obviously, they were slaughtered by itinerant, doped up, pensioner-fucking, psycho, rapist krauts who just happened to b in the vicinity that year of their deaths.

My thesis is founded on their statements which I considered to b self serving, unconvincing and rehearsed in a manner that lacked credibility. The whole scenario stank and their reaction to the alleged abduction was contrived and lacked true empathy. Once one dispenses with the lie, my deduction is the only remaining solution. In disposing of the corpse they also ditched the tranquillisers that they used to make her sleep while they got pissd at dinner.
