John Boehner: Ending Abortion Is 'One Of Our Most Fundamental Goals This Year'

I would've thought that the issue of stopping from becoming an increasingly marginalised party would be more important:

As hundreds of thousands of people braved sub-freezing temperatures in Washington, D.C., on Friday to join the anti-abortion protest March for Life, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) took the opportunity to reiterate his commitment to banning abortion in America for good.

Addressing the crowd at the National Mall via video broadcast, Boehner said it's time for anti-abortion activisits to "commit ourselves to doing everything we can to protect the sanctity of life." Step one, he said, is making permanent the Hyde Amendment, which prevents federal dollars from being used to pay for abortions except in cases of rape or incest.

"For the new Congress, that means bringing together a bipartisan pro-life majority and getting to work," Boehner said. "In accordance with the will of the people, we will again work to pass the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, formally codifying the Hyde Amendment."

Boehner said he will make it a national priority to "help make abortion a relic of the past."

"Let that be one of our most fundamental goals this year," he said.

The March for Life attracted a diverse crowd of young and old protesters from across the country. Hundreds of parents had bundled up their infants and toddlers and strapped protest signs to their strollers. Michael Kennedy, 33, and his wife Bethany, who is pregnant, drove their four children down from Westerly, Rhode Island to stand in 20-degree weather on the Mall.

"They're troopers," Bethany told HuffPost. "We felt like we have a responsibility just to be a witness to everyone else, to see that this is life, our children. We needed to be here."

Several lawmakers made it out to the protest to address the crowd in person. Rep. Diane Black (R-Tenn.) touted a bill she recently introduced that would strip Title X family planning funds from Planned Parenthood, and Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) delivered a sermon that called for a "spiritual cleansing."

"Our nation is adrift, adrift in a wilderness where right and wrong have become subservient to a hedonism of the moment," Paul said. "I believe our country is in need of a spiritual cleansing."

He added, "We much preach a gospel so full of compassion, a gospel so full of justice that it cannot be resisted. Then and only then will the law again protect the innocent."

Yes, let's make it a relic of the past by, errm, bringing back the past!!

Now, now Ant. GOP must have a top priority mission. The last one, "Beat Obama at all cost" didn't work out well. Suspect this new one will have the same outcome.

Yeah, but "Let's Stop Looking Like a Party of Angry, Old, Out-of-Touch, Whitemen" doesn't seem to be working either.

I look forward to reading details of their support for orphanages, foster homes, adoption centres, free comprehensive healthcare for all children, and all the other issues that a child, unwanted by their biological parents for what ever reason, will require for them to live in the world. I would guess though that these are not their priorities though after all, they have real issues of death dealing to be busy with with guns, war, banning healthcare... you name it.

Are republicans born stupid, callous, cold hearted with a hundred dollar bill up their japseye or do they learn it from their parents?

Boehner is just posturing to try to avoid a primary challenge from some teabagger next time around and to stop Cantor from stabbing him in the back.

Strangely I find myself almost agreeing with the old angry whiteman.

I personally see abortions as being morally ambiguous in that to ban or to allow abortions is arguably evil, so it should be a personal choice each woman to choose and live with the consequences.

With the current range of contraception, there is little excuse for unwanted pregnancy beyond ingorance and unavailability of contraceptives. If someone really wants to minimise abortions then all one has to do is deal with the real issues ignorance of and lack of availability of conracetive choices to men and women.

But then lets be honest for religious types they tend to object to both abortions and the necessary education and availability of the contraceptive choices that would minimise abortions. And thats the give away, these people see sex for making little baby religious nutters as a godly thing to do, whilst having sex for fun is a sin.
AKA sex is good as long as you do not engoy it too much.

in their minds sex for fun is a sin, unwanted pregnancy is god punishment for that sin, abortions and contraception is an abomination as its a man made way of avoiding gods punishment.

which brings us to the really interesting question which is why do they never explain the real reason behind their objections to abortions

The biggest mouth pieces for these religious wind bags more often than not have another side to their personalities that engages in everything they stand on their moral high horses and pontificate against. I always have a thought that those shouting the loudest are trying to console themselves for the acts they have actually committed. Find a nutcase banging on about abortions being evil and I would bet that somewhere HE has forced a girl to have one / She has forced their daughter to have one....

Religion mixed with politics is the biggest evil doer the world has known. If religious nuts keep interfering with politics, then politics should be allowed to interfere with religion beginning with equality for all inside of them and prosecuting any church leader / member (conspiracy to) for actions that inside a corporation would be found to be illegal. I wonder if there is a law against taking a work of fiction and passing it off as fact?

I think they just hard core capitalists who need a next generation to support their business.
An interesting argument for abortion is the sudden drop in crime in NYC about 15 years after it became legal in the state. Unwanted kids are more likely to be criminals.
An interesting argument against abortion is..., well there just isn't one.
Agree it is a war on women and it's all the planet.
