A turkish jet was shot down according to news reports.

Syrian security forces 'shoot down Turkish fighter jet' over Mediterranean Sea | Mail Online

    It seems Syria apologized.

    Daily Mail online news:

A Turkish fighter jet has been shot down down by Syrian security forces, the Turkish prime minister has claimed.

The F-4 jet disappeared over the eastern Mediterranean sea, southwest of the Turkish province of Hatay, which borders Syria, earlier today.
Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan today said Syria admitted it had shot down a Turkish warplane in the Mediterranean and apologised, BBC Monitoring reported.

Maybe, but it could be a plain warning, not to interfere, softened by an apology.

Well since Russia has just sent a few warships to their Syrian port then you maybe can think that Assad is playing a poker hand with the west and Turkey.
I still think this is a large whoopsie though upping things.

It would be interesting for these allegations to actually announce:

Where the airplane was - Syrian or Turkish airspace,

Whether it was one or two airplanes shot down - an F4 and F16 has been mentioned,

Whether anyone shot them down and if so what was the method, an air to air missile from a Syrian plane, ground to air missile from a Syrian missile battery, ground to air missile from a terrorist manpad of Libyan provenance, ground to air missile from a NATO implant

Whether it crashed of it's own fault - 40 year old F4.

Was the Lebanese TV station fed a story or has an agenda with the Syrian government and told broadcast this or else.

Don't forget there have been many other instances of countries fabricating evidence to cause a war.

So many conspiracies can be fabricated from this one announcement or hey lets just accept the BBC version and start NATO attacking a sovereign country.

There are probably plenty of people on both sides itching for a "Wag the Dog" scenario.
Too bad so many people have to die to feed the power hungry governments.

^I thought the F4's were quite resilient to damage, twin engines + a sturdy structure?

They are good machines. The best there was at the time. Turkey are retrofitted and used for reconnaissance. They look cool

This could get nasty. Israel is worried about Syrias chemical weapons. They want to make sure that they don't fall into the hands of the wrong people.
There are enough exports from Lybia already.

A Syrian military spokesman told the official news agency SANA that anti-aircraft batteries opened fire on an "unidentified target" after it entered their airspace, bringing it down in Syrian waters.
"Turkey will take all necesary steps and will take its final position after the full [explanation] of the incident," the statement said.

Ah ha, the most plausible explanation:

A former military Syrian official, now in Beirut, told dpa he had information that the Syrian troops who had shot the plane thought it was another Syrian pilot defecting with his jet to Turkey.

It would be interesting to know if Syria had planes up in the area at the same time.

The Turkish jet flew around in circles off the Syrian coast and in Syrian airspace until it got shot down... no prizes for guessing who put the Turks up to it.

It's like the Tonkin incident with real bullets.

So you know the Turkish jet 'flew around in circles until it was shot down' do you ?
I wished you would let the world media and the Turkish government know what you are privy to that the rest of us are still waiting to discover.
Are you a phsycic ?, could you let the rescue craft know where to search for the wreckage that they are striving to discover please.

^^ not circles exactly, more like figures of 8...

The Syrian military said the jet was flying fast and low just a few hundred yards off the Syrian coast when it was hit, and it fell in Syrian waters seven miles west of the village of Um al-Touyour, north of Latakia.

    Everyone relax, it's "wasn't hostile".

    Syria: Plane shooting 'not hostile'

    Jun 24 2012
Syria confirmed it had shot down a Turkish reconnaissance plane because the plane entered its airspace, insisting it was "not an attack" as both sides desperately tried to de-escalate the episode before it exploded into a regional conflagration.
Turkey threatened to retaliate but did not say what action it would take as it searched for the aircraft's two missing pilots.
The downed plane heightened tensions between two countries that had been allies before Syria's 15-month violent uprising, and signalled that the violence gripping Syria is increasingly bleeding outside its borders.
Germany and Iraq were among the countries urging restraint in the region.
Syria and neighbouring Turkey had cultivated close ties before the Syrian revolt began in March 2011, but since then Turkey has become one of the strongest critics of Syria's regime. Turkey hosts civilian and military Syrian opposition groups, including hundreds of army defectors who are affiliated with the Free Syrian Army and collect food and other supplies to deliver to comrades on smuggling routes.
Turkish authorities also suspect Damascus, which was collaborating with Turkey in its fight against autonomy-seeking Kurdish rebels, is now turning a blind eye to Syria-based Kurdish fighters who belong to the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, considered a terrorist organisation in the US and Europe.
The plane, an unarmed F4, went down in the Mediterranean Sea about eight miles from the Syrian town of Latakia, Turkey said. Syria claimed the jet violated its air space over territorial waters, penetrating by about a kilometre. It said Syrian forces only realised it was a Turkish jet after firing at it.
In a telephone interview with Turkish TV news channel A Haber yesterday, Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi said the downing was "not an attack". "An unidentified object entered our air space and unfortunately as a result it was brought down. It was understood only later that it was a Turkish plane," A Haber quoted Makdissi in a translation of the interview. "There was no hostile act against Turkey whatsoever. It was just an act of defence for our sovereignty."
Turkish President Abdullah Gul conceded the plane may have unintentionally crossed into Syrian airspace, but said such an act was "routine" for jets to unintentionally cross borders for short periods. The government has not described the plane's specific mission.
Mr Gul said his government was still investigating what happened, but "no one should have any doubt that whatever (action) is necessary will be taken".
