Thread: Yet Another Earthquake(s)

At 13.58 we had a rather lively 5.8 centred about 7km offshore and then at a quarter past three we had a quite violent shaker registering 6.0 at only 5 km deep. That is shallow. Aftershocks continue to shake the floorboards.

Damn, welcome to Jellywood.

Didn't feel anything inland from it.

Just had one five minutes ago here in the Philippines. Shook the house pretty hard.

I heard on the bush telegraph it was a M 6 last at Chch.

^^Nope. My guess is that it was probably offshore near the island of Mindoro. I am in Batangas, southern Luzon, so we usually feel those.

Just came up on the net. I am correct. 5.3 off of Mindoro, 75 km south of Batangas.

Yup, they're calling it a six, underneath South New Brighton at about 6km. It was a sharpish jolt followed by seven seconds or so of a rolling feeling.

Yes, that was taken earlier today.

Lot of aftershocks felt in Canterbury, nothing inland Otago.

I'm wondering about when/if any Wellington shocks will happen.

Seems as if CHCH is going to shake for some time to come.

Doesn't look like this swarm of "aftershocks", actually part of a larger movement, is going to settle down quickly.

No-one's gonna rebuild Chch in a hurry either.
Unless it's shifted off the swamp.

A swarm of 32+ EQs since the first one at 13.58 NZ yesterday. Now 10.30 am NZ.
Averaging a shock every half hour or so.
All N-NE of Chch, all shallow, 5 < 15 km average depth.
M 3.2 < M5.

EQ swarm current stable phase at M 3< 4, average depth 7-8 kilometres, 10-20 kilometres NE of Chch.

My take on this is that the eastern foot of the NZ rise is submerging as the Southern Alps rise while the Pacific plate pushes over the Australian plate in the S. Island.

Australian plate meanwhile pushing over Pacific plate in N. Island.

No great volcano alerts, but EQs getting closer to Wellington.

The EQs at Chch could be coming to an end, or now settled prior to the next fault fracturing, an ongoing tectonic process.

Happy... How many of those are you actually detecting when they happen? Has to be unnerving.

Quakes are still an ongoing scenario in one locus NE of Chch.
EQs levelling out between 2.5M < 4M at shallow depths 6k< 15k or so.
Peaks at 5< 6 M, then low magnitude phase before another peaking period, a pattern of quakes.
