Barnacles is positioned as a Mediterranean restaurant but it also offers a menu of local seafood dishes.
One of them, called ying yang ($22) because it comprises two dishes on a plate, is excellent.
The two dishes, crispy honey baby squid and prawns in mayonnaise sauce, show up a stark contrast in taste as well as colours.
The squids are almost inky while the prawns are a pale yellowish hue.
The latter are good, with the shellfish fresh and succulent.
But the baby squids are the star of the dish.
They come drenched in a sweet sauce and still manage to stay wondrously crispy.
It’s simply the best version I’ve eaten.
