One of Gayatri’s hot sellers is its South Indian curry fish head.

It is available for $10 on Mondays and Wednesdays, as there is an ongoing promotion, and sells for $18 to $24 on other days.

The fish head, which is big enough for two people, comes swimming in a big bowl of gravy that is thickened by coconut milk.

More than 10 spices go into the making of the slightly sourish-spicy gravy but it is not so spicy that it will leave your eyes tearing. The tinge of sourness comes from the tamarind juice.

The flesh of the red snapper is tender and cooked just right so that slivers come off easily at the touch of a fork. The viscous curry goes well with plain white rice, but you can also opt for briyani rice ($3.50) which is served with two types of vegetables and papadum (crackers).

The restaurant is no new kid on the Race Course block. It moved here about four years from Race Course Lane.

It also boasts a table call service which allows customers to get waiters’ attention at the touch of a button.
