Its black pepper crabs which it created in 1982 made it famous but its chilli crabs ($36 for one kg) are just as yummy.

The Sri Lankan crabs, which are huge and fleshy, is served in a big pool of creamy sauce thickened with eggs.

The perfect balance of sweetness and spiciness of the gravy, which is made using at least 17 ingredients, makes it finger-licking good.

Mop it all up with homemade mantou (steamed or fried buns) and you are in crab heaven.

Even Bollywood sex symbol Hrithik Roshan, who was in Singapore in January 2004 on holiday, ate the chilli crabs and pronounced them “superb”.

The service is so good it even shells the crabs for customers but the fun of eating these meaty crustaceans is in shelling them yourself.

And you don’t have to worry about staining your clothes – diners get bibs to protect their clothing.

The restaurant, which has been around since the 1940s, had its origins at Bedok Resthouse, where it was a seafood destination.
