01-42/43/44 Lucky Plaza, Tel: 6235-5223 Open: 8am to 9pm
The restaurant may be called Lucky Prata but the dish to order here is the chicken briyani ($5.50).
Many places offer this Indian dish of spiced rice and meat but the chefs at this air-conditioned eatery in Lucky Plaza make an especially good version of it.
The fluffy basmati rice has a mesmerising fragrance from the spices and the almond milk used to cook it. It’s rich – there are also cashew halves dotted among the rice grains – but not in a cloying way.
I would quite happily eat the rice on its own. But it is a lot better with the chicken, a tender chicken leg and thigh piece with a pretty spicy kick and a thickish gravy.
Rounding off this very affordable set meal is a scoop of tangy cucumber salad and a crispy pappadum.
For people who have despaired of ever finding affordable and delicious Indian food in Orchard Road, or good briyani without having to queue, Lucky’s the place to go.
