    Quick trip to Hanoi

On a business trip to Hanoi, Always love the place. weather just perfect. I took my wife this time to tour around a bit. The pre flight song and dance due to Covid was some work but travel here was easy. Additionally was told today that we do not have to PCR Test before returning back Thailand.

    A few pics

Arrived and chilling by the pool bar

Hanoi beer and a Elijah Craig Small batch Bourbon

    Downtown and night walking

    Random pics walking around.

Cannot come without enjoying some Vietnamese Noodle soup.

Nice pics, JP. I've spent a bit of time in Hanoi and I think it's beautiful, but I find quite a few of the people to be some of the rudest in SE Asia.

It's not just the weather that gets warmer the further south you go (at this time of year anyway ).

Interesting contrast, I have always found the folks around these parts super nice. My wife even said the same. Of course my wife being Thai also believes that they try and rip you off every chance on change so every time she buys something its a full on sit down and count.

Nice. Strange to see Uncle Ho's mausoleum devoid of tourists. When I visited there (2019), there were lots of tour groups.

@stumpy - how's the tourism there now? Do/ did you see lots of foreign tourists or just a trickle?

Re: the Viet people, accdg to my mom the Southeners are warmer & friendlier than from those up north. (She's from the south).

She also said that the North people have more correct / proper pronunciation. The Southern pronunciation is more "butchered".

    Enjoy your work-fun trip!

    @ Katie

Tourism in general is very slow. Our flight from Ho Chi Minh City wasn't full and the airport for domestic flights was pretty easy.

Around town I saw one big group of Western tourists getting off a bus.

If you aren't afraid of contracting covid and can endure a bit of pre travel paperwork it's actually a nice time to travel and most areas are in the opening up stages so businesses are reopening and the traffic is light and costs cheaper.

I have to honestly say I have only been to Tuy Hoa area and Hanoi and always on business. I always add on a few days to hang out and take on a bit of fun so I cannot honestly compare southern and northern folk. Guess a southern holiday trip is in order.

Thanks for your photos. Been there only once.

Very enjoyable hotel staff very accommodating and the down town motorcycle lads will know where to find whatever you desire.
We went onto Haiphong Bay for a few days. Took the early morning "local train", aimed at locals taking their produce to various markets. The return train was a standard, a little faster but not as entertaining.

    Will return soon.

They also kicked the shit out of the Chinese. The '79 border war, the last time China attacked a foreign nation. They got their asses whipped.

That explains why they’ve stuck to attacking their own nation ever since.

Nice one Stumpy, thanks for the pics.

My last trip to VN was 2007. HCM, Vung Tao, HCM. Never made it up to Hanoi.

There were these 2 English lads we'd been drinking with in BKK that were headed to Hanoi, bumped into them in HCM, they complained there were no women of the night up there and made a bolt for the capital.

I'm looking forward to getting back to VT one day, I've been close to working there a few times since covid started so I'll hold off on paying my own way there for now, but would be good to catch up with a bunch of old work pals from my Coil Tubing days in Brunei. And they have a casino now.

I kind of remember an alleged Deng Xiaopeng quote:

"I visited USA in january, went to Texas and wore my first Cowboy hat.

When I returned to China, I ordered an invasion of Vietnam in febuary"

That’s a decent bar, Stumpy. Were they whiskeys or a mix of everything?

Well stocked with all types of spirits including some top shelf Scotch from Macallan. It was nice as it was all open to the street so you could enjoy the evening.

    Last few pics

New factory progress from roof of building 2.

Really enjoyed walking around the city. Very clean.

Lunch, BBQ chicken, with a taters and onions in a nice sauce with a French baguette. Those cucumbers got tossed immediately

    Near a roundabout

Great Noodle shop. The Wonton soup is outstanding

End of day I found myself in this bar. Enjoyed a Local craft pilsner from the tap, 7.2% abv. Very nice

Yeah. I dropped by a few. Great selection, nice atmosphere. The area we stayed was heavy westerner traffic. Met quite a few Americans in that bar. Also to note, they also know how to make a real cocktail.

Another point to note...it's been recording far higher AQI readings than anywhere in Thailand over the last few days.

The third highest recording of 'major cities' in the world today, at 162 (unhealthy).

That was one not so great factor when we visited - but even ten years ago we just called it 'smokey'.

It seemed lots of folk burned wood to keep warm, and they're on narrow streets with many four storey+ buildings.

Ya know Cy, when we landed that cold front was in and the skies were incredibly blue and air was nice. However flying out today it was a hazy mess. I agree. I saw people dressed up like Thailand. Long jacket, scarfs, beanies etc.

I think I got very lucky weather wise.

Sitting at Ho Chi Minh City airport right now. Flight back home in about an hour....well let me rephrase that. Back in Thailand for a test and go then back home the next day.

4 days later....... back on the road again. This time to the wine country for a month or so.
