    Ngapali

The Dragonlady has had her interest piqued by Ngapali Beach in Burma. Does anyone have any experiences of this place they would care to share. We are looking at maybe flying from Don Mueng down to Thandwe and staying six or seven nights.

    Cheers.

It's been on my radar to, in fact I suggested it at xmas but got outvoted by mrs BLD and the kids so we went to Vietnam instead, I would be interested to see it before it gets developed.

as far as i know u can not fly from DM there, u'd fly into Yangon than another flight
Never been, no interest in an overpriced resort beach area.
why not fly to Dawei instead..Muang Magan Beach 16 ms from town...Fantastic white sand beaches, great fresh seafood, local villages to visit ( visits to Dawei town which is very nice) few tourist ( not yet on the Tourist route) you than could take a 4 hour shared taxi to the border and exit back to Thailand.....

Nice pics mate. The Dragonlady and I have a liking for overpriced resorts, so Ngapali is on the radar. There is no way in hell she would drive for 4hours on the goat tracks of Burma. Although in saying that, we are about endure 4 hours on the road to Otres beach Sihanoukville.

    Maybe next trip.

You know what old Firey is like, always planning ahead. Bloody woman is gonna put me in the poor house.

She has this upcoming trip to Cambodia at Easter then a few weeks later it's back to LOS for 5 weeks so she might have to put this one off till The next season.

If you want to get there tell Mrs BLD how cheap the seafood is, you'll be there in a flash.

@bld & croc - I met a couple of backpackers from my myanmar trip last year. Before I met them in Mawlamyine, they had just been to/near Dawei. They said the beach was great and simple (I think they stayed in a bungalow, don't know if fan or a/c). But being young backpackers, their needs were simple and didn't need flashy stuff. After Dawei, they took the train (8 hrs I think) to Mawlamyine. From Mawlamyine, it's ~4h to the Mae Sot border in Th. It's not a muddy goat rd, it's a new cemented road over mountains, ricefields & rubber plantations. Nice views - see my Myanmar thread if interested. I don't know what border you could use from.Dawei to cross to Th. Maybe the 3 pagodas pass? Expats in bkk would know more, I think.

Croc, it's usually shared taxis to travel long distances in Myanmar, but if you're flash you could hire the whole taxi. I think you'd need the whole taxi for your luggage. Lol

You could fly to Yangon, spend a day or 2 in the city, then make your way to Dawei or Ngapali. Cheers!

If you need a driver in Mawlamyine, I can PM you the details on my driver/host/guide before. Very nice guy & speaks good English.

Btw, try not to go there during Songkran/Thingyan, as the roads (and the drunk young ppl on motorbikes) get crazy.

You can get aircon and Cold Myanmar beer ( almost as good as beer Lao and only 1,500 kyat for a large bottle) at the beaches near Dawei
Never been, like i said, no interest in going. Have heard from a few people i have met that have been to Ngapoli and the beaches in Dawei and all preferred Dawei,

From what I'm reading Ngapali caters mainly for foreigners as it is a place that requires a short flight or a bloody long drive to get to. I'm told that the cost of a flight makes it restrictive to most locals. The locals tend to go to either of the two main beach areas for weekends, these are about a five hour drive south of Yangon.

I was reading a blog from "The Wanderlusters" which outlined the cost of eating out and drinking. A coldie would set you back about $au 1.80 and a feed of prawns about $au 5.00.

Watching quite a few YouTube vids and the beach is beautifully empty in most of them and in bloody good knick.

Accommodation varies through the spectrum, but as Katie knows our backpacking days are over, so you should find a nice air con place with a pool for a reasonable rate.

We just picked up 7 nights in phuket or Samui in 4 star gaff for a measly $300 and it is valid for 2years. So we can use this in conjunction with a trip to Ngapali to make the flying worth it.

    Thanks for that Katie.

You would be surprised at how lightly the Dragonlady travels when needed. However if it's a shopping expedition to Bangers or Singers, look out.

Just reading on Mymyanmar that accommodation in around Dawei can be very hard to come by due to the lack of foreign licenses. Also says that movement around the peninsula can be restricted for the same reason.

    Does however look very beautiful.

Perhaps these things are at least partly related?

yep, and the Italian /Thai company is building a new 4 lane highway from the border to Town.
I met some Burmese Investors down from Yangon when i was on the beach at a small restaurant, they told me most of the beach front land has already been brought and sold. If u want see it in is beautiful natural state go now.
10 years it will be a 6-7 hours drive from Bangkok

As far as accommodations, I was there in dec 2015, plenty of places in town to stay and about 4-5 bungalow type places on the beach ( 2 had only fan rooms an only $10/night) there is also a Myanmar tourist bungalow operation all off by itself and it was empty

^the backpackers that I met said that they were the only tourists at the time. So I agree that if you want to see Dawei in its unspoiled state, go now/near future before it becomes overdeveloped.
