thats why $50 is very cheap

I was thinking about things like Mt. Popa, which is an hours drive away.
I went to (and stayed ) Mt Popa in Nov as we were on motorcycles coming from Mindat on the way to Mandalay.
Was not that impressed but did NOT walk up.
Late afternoon is best for photography
Yeah 777 steps or something. If the bint fancies trying that, I'll go and have a few beers and wait for her.

I might try it if it that is a zipline coming down.

You dont pay them to stay for the night, you pay them to leave in the morning

    any hotel will do
using booking.com u can book a hotel and usually cancel 2days before ur stay with full refund and many of the hotels in Burma ( at least the ones i have stayed in) you pay at the hotel

Just ask at ur hotel; one is no diferent than another...
    Just rent ur own motorcycle.....
just back from my Mandalay-Inle lake- Maruk u- Sittwe -Yangon trip

NEVER NEVER again long distance buss!!
The VIP bus that run Yangon-Bagan-/Mandalay/Inle look ok as they almost lay flat but the others........

JJ Bus company is good for the trip to Bagan. As PhuketRichard mentioned, the boat is nicer and way more interesting. The electric bikes are a laugh and a good way to see Bagan itself. Think park entrance was around 25,000 kyat or something and good for 4 days or so. Bagan Palace is an extra 5000 kyat and imo is well worth checking out.

As for Mandalay, try to stay away from the rail station as it is very noisy. A few of my friends stay by the moat at The Swan- decent breakfast, icy pool and comfy beds. Some complain of a mosquito issue

    i love the area near the train station;
my choice of stay is the Royal Power hotel on street 80

BTW the train tracks separate new and old Mandalay

I'm a light sleeper, but aside from the noise it's a great area IMO. It's near Diamond Plaza which is great for picking up travel supplies. The meal provided by JJ Bus is small- you'll want to bring some extra snacks.

Happy Noodles behind the station does good noodles (oddly enough!) and cold beers for rock bottom prices. For a more opulent feed head to Bistro 82 on 82nd Street- German chef who will cook up a great steak. Decent wine list, too.
