I had 4 weeks.

Planned to head to Kathmandu via Pokhara (never heard of it)

Never left Pokhara - what an utterly splendid bit of the planet.

I was 29 when I Trekked in Nepal.

At 57 there is no way in this world my knees would let me get up and down those mountains. Be carried out I reckon after paying 6 million quid.

That said, plenty of great day walks out of Pokhara, anyone can do it if in decent condition.

You should go.

I'll look into it Terry...my knees are still working and my legs do most everything required...its the altitude adapting I might have some difficulty with.

In Peru on trips to Machu Pichu you spend a couple days in Cusco drinking Coca matte' in order to kill the effects of altitude sickness. Nice trip as well.

I'll look into it Terry...my knees are still working and my legs do most everything required...its the altitude adapting I might have some difficulty with.

My legs and knees are still working OK but I fucked one knee up in a fire one time.

Its OK but not one hundred %. When trekking in Nepal one can be walking for many hours climbing or descending these mountains. Going down is the worst for knees.

Any weakness in legs or knees and they will certainly bound into life on a trek. No doubt about that.

Essential to have knees and legs in good working condition or never attempt trekking in Nepal.

Only way down is to be carried by a team of locals or on the back of a donkey when the track allows.

Worst case scenario Helicopter rescue is available. Make sure you are insured for this, they will not fly unless the money is guaranteed .

Altitude does not enter into trekking in Nepal unless attempting high altitude treks.

Most punters just do medium level Tea house trekking and bunk up in a Tea house every night. We done 6 days starting and ending in Pokhara.

That said the climbing and descending is brutal at times.

One is still amongst the mountains surrounded by blinding views even at low altitude trekking.

About $700 bucks return from Bkk to Nepal. Not bad.

7 hour bus ride to Pokhara from Kathmandu or an expensive flight. All reports I'm reading says the Tourist bus is OK, we done this is 88 on an old banger on atrocious roads.

I will try and get back this year. Been meaning to go back for many years.

I'll just do day walks.

So what months are the best to do these treks?

The prime month is November in Nepal. All the high altitude trekking is done in this month.

Monsoon finishes in September so late September into October for Tea house trekking is good before the crowd arrives.

Next best time is March to May, this is spring time.

I'm gona try and get there September or early October this year.

i first went in 1976, Last trip was 2001 when i trekked to the lakes outside Kathmandu ( Gossunkund)
Knees gave out coming down an had to walk zig zag an even backwards to mange the last 2 days.
2 steps heading straight down and unbearable pain.

We ran mtn bike tours out of the ktm GH in 85/86 an overland bike tours from Lhasa to Kathmandu Richard Reitman Photography | Tibet
those were great days did most of the major routes trekking an even did the Annapurna circuit by mtn bike and made it 3/4 of the way to Mustang before we were arrested an turned back.

How many moons?

Nice shots. Was there last year in May. October is the best season as Terry says but they got unlucky last year with the Blizzard killing dozens of tourists on the Annapurna circuit in October.

That was after the Everest disaster while I was there killing heaps of Sherpas.

Looking through these old pics from 2009 certainly reignites the travel bug inside me.

Not as good as Phuket Richards pics.
