Manchester - Google Street v Shitman Street

About a year ago I remember one of these cars passing me outside work with a Google sticker on the side.

When Google Street was launched, I logged on for a butchers & there I was.

I thought that was pretty cool.

Yesterday the weather was lovely. As is custom, a lot of people head for the pubs, including myself.

I got there & it was packed.

This boozer has featured in one of Mathos' threads. It has a long history, having been rebuilt brick by brick after the IRA blew Manchester up about ten years ago, amongst other things. I think it's over two-hundred years old.

These clowns in the background were 'free runners' - the art of jumping off walls & such like a complete cock, popularized by a James Bond movie. The crowd, pissed as farts, were cheering them on as there wasn't much else to look at. The biggest cheer was reserved for when one of them fell backwards off a twenty foot wall & crashed onto the pavement.

See anything more interesting in the photo?

I sat down on a step to take a better shot of the, um, free-runners, but was clocked

There was a funny incident when some foreign fool wandered in wearing a Barca shirt. He got several pints poured over his head & the doormen threw him out - welcome to Manchester! Sadly it was all over before I could dig out my phone.

There was nowhere to sit, so I only had the one & fucked off to the park, situatuated within Picadilly Gardens.

    This was also packed.

These are African dancers, complete with bongos & some other kind of instrument.

    They were terrible.

There was nowhere to sit again, so I took advantage of a passing dealer & continued my search for a place to settle in the sun.

I figured I'd try my luck in the park in the gay village (I should probably re-write that, but you know what I mean).

I found an empty bench. It was empty because it was facing away from the sun. I couldn't be bothered looking anywhere else as I had a pack of Kronenburg I'd just picked up getting warm in my bag & was also looking forward to a joint, so I kicked off my shoes, stretched my legs out on the bench & settled down for a good session.

I was soon bored & decided to do my own version of Google Street - I'm wheeling out Shitman Street!

This is the view in front of me. Just a few fudgepackers, not much going on.

This is the view to my right.

    There's a couple of semi-decent carpet-munchers in this one.

This is the view to my left.

It's not a very exciting picture, granted, but this is Shitman Street, remember, so it has to be thorough.

    The view behind.

I got hungry, so went for a burger. I know you lot like your food threads, so I'll do a review.

I bought this sorry-looking thing for about a fiver.

    It was crap.

    I munched it though.

As the sun began to go down, it was time to go home. A quick stroll back through Piccadilly revealed that most of the people had decided the same thing.

Except for the dealers, who had been kept away from the nice folk all day by the plod.

    With that, I went home.

For the one person who enjoyed this thread I'll continue to update it.

I ended up back in town yesterday.

The weather was just as good. I walked down the main High St & noticed there was a bit of political feel to it.

This mob were peddling Islam outside of an empty shop, one of many empty shops on the street nowadays.

They hadn't made much effort - a few leaflets spread out on a wallpaper table & some tinny music coming from a small stereo.

This lot, on the other hand, were rocking.

They had banners & tannoys & were really giving it loads, a complete contrast to the last lot.

There's a bad vibe towards the political parties at the moment with all the expenses scandals & people are worried the BNP are going to clean up. I don't think they will, but let's see.

These guys had made an effort - they were punting CD's of pipe music.

I enjoyed it as well. Looks like the place has changed a fair bit since I was last there, early eighties. Spent a lot of time around "Shitman" street area, before it became a gay village. I worked in the Playboy casino on Canal street for a couple of years. Cheers.

Says bloody wild man of Borneo.

This recent bout of good weather has brought out a lot of beauties. I refrained from taking to them though, as it might shatter the illusion I had going on in my head.

I've seen these guys getting all their make-up on sometimes.

They are actually Afghans, or something.

I threw him 20p - fucked if he was having a £1 coin. There's a firm of about five of them altogether dotted around the city.

Whoever it was who worked on Canal St might like these.

These were taken on Sackville St, that one leads to the Union.

This one leads the other way.

No, but all the girls were. Terrible place to work, full of women that had to pass a costume test to work there, and then wear bunny costumes all day. The staffroom was a shocking place to be for a young lad, as there were far more women than blokes .

Only know Manchester a bit - used to drive up there twice a week from Cannock as I contracted some work out to a drawing office in Old Street.
used to stop at the Caledonian Hotel .

This is the rear of our town hall & it's a magnificent building.

You lot weren't worth walking all the way round the front to capture, where it looks a lot more impressive.

I fail completely to see the point of this memorial in our town centre?

Perhaps something paying tribute to the Peterloo Massacre would have had some historical relevance, but this shit
