A few pics of my travels back home to say hello to friends and family.

The weather for August - September was excellent, most days were sunny and warm(ish) 17 degrees was the hottest

View from my Aunties house looking over the North Sea at Stirling Village near Peterhead. The lighthouse is Boddam Ness Lighthouse...

Usually you see supply boats or helicopters on their way to the oil rigs out this way

just around the corner from the lighthouse...

The bottom small rocky Island at the right hand side is where you can see seals sunbathing. We walked down but could only see them in the water. Must have been snack time.

Next we went up to the North Eastern tip of Scotland.

Fraserburgh town... Main industry is fishing, here you can see the fish houses (warehouses)


Looking up the coastline along the town. In the foreground is where they would have hung the nets and repaired and dried them.


The above pics were taken from the Kinaird Lighthouse which was the first in Scotland after a year of storms and wrecked boats at the turn of the 19th century.

and the new working lighthouse that took over when Kinnaird was decommissioned in line of automation of the lighthouses.
Note the size of the fog horn. Guaranteed to make you shit yourself if you are caught out by it.

There's a rig in the background being towed to a new location by two tugs and another in the far backgroung drilling. hard to see in this compressed pic.

OMG! That's the area I come from. My Mum's family are from Elgin & Lossie, just a little further up the coast.

I love that dramatic Scottish coastline, had some family in Dunbar years ago and had an amazing holiday up there when I was a kid.

Not quite the North East now. Down to Falkirk to see the Falkirk Wheel which is a great feat of engineering.

It is a link between the Clyde canal and the union canals which run across Scotland. They used to be joined by 11 locks and would take hours to go through They came up with the Falkirk Wheel after getting a lottery grant to upgrade the waterways.





There are still 2 locks at the union canal side of the wheel to be negotiated before arriving at the wheel...


Here's the wheel in motion...

each of the gondolas hold 300 tons of water so it's lifting / lowering 600 tons at one time but balanced evenly. Apparently it only uses the power equivalent to 2 kettles due to the design and counter balancing.

Falkirk wheel is nice, my brother moved to just down the street from it. Only problem is that he live in Falkirk now which is an absolute shiite hole. Grandparents lived there most of their lives and fuck me it's the pits. Not as bad as Paisley but not far off.

Quite looking forward to going exploring around Scotland again.

NR when were you around Lossie? I was there in 79-85

Ooops answering this a bit late. 1969 - 1972/3 (when I was born to just after my sister was) and then just on holiday since. My gran still lives in Elgin. No family in Lossie now, but have relatives buried in Lossie cemetery & still visit Lossie every time I'm up there.

If you want to see beautiful Scotland, stay away from the North East corner. Try the west coast and the highlands to see picturesque Scotland.

I spent most of my life in Peterhead, shit hole with the weather to match. Only thing going for it is it's slightly better than Fraserburgh, but that's not hard to achieve.
