Unfortunately the Museum was closed and you couldn't access the viewing area to look at some the entries, very disappointing. This was then compounded as i enquired if the Moorcock Inn which the family own was open, and i was informed its been closed since COVID.

So that was our early evening trip written off.

So it was just the shop open, Derek the patriarch of the family wasn't around but one of his sons Paul (middle below) was and was incredibly tolerant of the queue of people wanting their picture taken with him. We didn't bother, never really interested me.

The side trip was a bit of a disappointment until the chap above talking to Paul turned up, he has a couple of cars he wanted to put into auctions so it was round the back for a look.

In really good nic inside and out. Speaking to the owner and his son, they buy classic cars, do them up a bit and drive them for a while and sell them on - not for any real profit just a father and son hobby, lucky son.

Back on the road and back to Pickering we stopped off for a couple of pints before getting back to the station for the return. First though another quick look at that engine.

This is the Larpool Viaduct, no longer hosting trains but is maintained and forms part of a cycle way.

As neither of us were driving now the Moorcock trip was off we availed ourselves of a couple of Theakston's Old Peculiar on the way back.

Back at Whitby they moved the engine back to the front

Leaving the station and there was a sea of bikes parked up, my attention was caught by an R80 Bobber.

They take their duty of care for their customers seriously.

Sorry the pic doesn't do it justice and they got knocked about on the way to the jetty for a sit down. Inflationary times, they are 50% more expensive than when i last bought them some years back, now £9.25p

Indeed, its produced by a company called Bowler, they have been taking ordinary Landrovers and turning them into monsters for years now - that vehicle is a Dakar rally version.

So it was a sit down at the jetty to eat the fish and chips. I noted that the seagulls were noticeably less in numbers in the evening, presumably they stuffed themselves mugging the takeaway tourists at lunchtime and were sleeping it off.

The only disturbance was a group of local kids who'd stripped off their school uniforms to jump off a harbour pier and swim across to where we sat - there was a gaggle of girls with them so boys being boys they were trying to impress them

and that was it, a couple of quiet ones and to bed for an early start.

The only fly in the ointment was the trip to Fortunes to stock up on some smoked kippers in the morning which turned into a traffic jam up a the narrow cobbled streets and after 30 minutes I sacked the idea

Fortunes are an institution in Whitby and it was a sad miss on my part.

So a few misses during the trip but it was a great to catch up and the NYMR was a great day out and well worth the £50 imo.

I have an app called Imgur (Imgur: The magic of the Internet) You can download the app. on your phone or you can also download it on your computer. Once you are on the site, you can download images onto the site (to do that, you'd hit images and then add images..they need to be on your computer first). Sorry if this sounds complicated.

Once you do that, once you click on an image that you have downloaded onto the site (and one you want to post on here), on the right you will see a link (many links) but copy the link that says, 'direct link'. Then on this site , you will pick the tab that says, download from link. Then paste that link into the bar and uncheck the box at the bottom. Then you are ready to post it. I find it really handy to have my pics on imgur. I hope it can work for you. Let me know if you have any questions?

Now deliberately so, its great to sit back and listen to the engine. It was noticeable when the diesel took over that the braking and acceleration was harsher. I grew up at the end of the steam age and in my mind its a lovely way to travel, just the whole age and feel of it.

We are lucky these old trains are maintained (the skills to build them, drive them and the infrastructure also has a team to upkeep it) . There was a youngster on board, really blonde who was obsessed by the whole thing and the volunteers doted on him, the future on these railways no doubt. His dad spent the journey picking him up and feeding him into the engine and other places to look at the detail. Great to see.
