    Lanes, Trains and Automobiles.......-3-hqxrh4b-jpg

we had an afternoon catch up around the pubs and had Fish and chips at lunch in the Trenchers and evening in the Magpies, both excellent take aways, watch the Seaguls!!!!. All the top Fish and Chip places have restaurants, it occurred to me that with the price differential of 50% for eat in they have over years trained the Seaguls to dive bomb you to drive you into their restos. I saw two people get their boxes (£10) ripped from their grasp and them left impotently raging at the sky.

    Anyway tomorrow is another day...

Oh, thanks. It looks like a very lovely place. I took the train up north from London, and it passed through York and Newcastle, not too close to Whitby looks like on the map.

The idea was we'd book ourselves on to the North York Moors Railway (NYMR) for a leisurely steam trip from Whitby to Pickering. The cost is £41 return and we chucked a few more bob at it and rounded it to £50 with gift aid. The link below is their schedule and ticket prices.

    https://www.nymr.co.uk/yorkshire-express

The railway is a charity and run by volunteers so the extra cash will hopefully go to go use.

We decided to cycle to Whitby station to check the place out before the trip the next day, there was a train ready to depart back to Pickering.

    can't fault the weather

this train is 825, teh NYMR site lists the trains they have operating and when if anyone is interested.

    https://www.nymr.co.uk/Pages/Category/st

they do some manoeuvring at the station and switch teh train from the front to the back

Whilst all this shenanigans was going on i noticed someone i thought i knew, my Brother In Law Richard and I thought, thats odd I don't remember my sister saying they'd be in Whitby too. As he walked passed i called out to him and on the third attempt, he turned around and said "I know you think i'm Richard but i'm not", slightly confused because he is the spitting image of him it took a moment for the penny to drop and then "Geof!!!", "Yes" was the reply. He is Richards twin brother who lives in a small village outside Leeds and was there with the family for a few days. A small world, i'd not seen him in 4 years.

I sent the picture to my sister who asked me when i took the picture with Rich as she couldn't remember it, even she has trouble telling them apart after being married 41 years

After the session the previous day me and the son were up, breakfasted and out by 09.00, the train leaves Whitby at 10.00 and we decided to take the bikes on board so we could explore a bit easier when we got to Pickering, more later. They advise you to turn up early 09.30 so we were there prompt but the train didn't arrive until 09.45 abut it did let British Rail down by leaving dead on time and was unaffected by tht RMT strikes plaguing the UK rail system atm.

My clown bile was suffering from a slow deflation and we only had the one pump which was not really doing the business.

    Mendip will appreciate the backdrop.

It survived the dog incident a few weeks back much better than i did.

At the station it gets loaded on the freight van for the princely sum of £3, pushchairs are free.

    Lanes, Trains and Automobiles.......-21-lte1cqf-jpg

Loaded up, now the route and times

The route is up teh Esk Valley which takes you up into teh North York Moors, I received an email a couple of days before hand which said they had to make changes to the schedule due to the "Unprecedented fire risk". It wasn't clear what the impact on our journey would be but garbled communication was a theme it turns out but mustn't grumble, they are volunteers.

The journey starts at 10.00 and finishes in Pickering at 11.40ish. The return leaves at 3pm and you alight at Whitby c5pm which means about 3 hours free time in Pickering. There are stops along the way but the ticket does not permit you to get on and off, there is another service you can take to do this. There is also a walking trail that follows the train track out of Whitby up the valley which looks like a very pleasant walk in good weather.

    The route.

    Lanes, Trains and Automobiles.......-nymr-route-jpg

There is a stop at Grosmont where they change engines but more later.

The journey as mentioned follows the valley up to Pickering, and it is up and the valley climbs up to the moors. The scenery is very pleasant with a shady tree lined river valley which i think i'd like to hike and opening to fields and glimpses of outcrops and moors. Its very rural so not much housing.

you can see the shot is blurred when taken inside.

so I resorted to a mix of inside and leaning out the window as we went.

The rolling stock is late 50's and the chap managing the buffet bar said the dining carriage is early 60's.

    Lanes, Trains and Automobiles.......-24-izma1ua-jpg

You are allocated a seat with your ticket which i suppose is good if its too busy but i estimate it was just under 1/2 full. The lady with the sunnies was from Laaandan and spent the first hour of the journey talking about COVID and Long COVID that she and her long suffering husband were afflicted with. I noted on the journey back the couple she had regaled her tail of woe to had moved.

The slightly posher carriage, there were no differentiated seat pricing but when you select your seat its not made clear what the carriages are like but no complaints.

    Lanes, Trains and Automobiles.......-30-pmkx521-jpg

I remember carriages like these as a nipper, they were used into the 70's and probably beyond.

Buffet bar and sadly again they let us down with no notorious British Rail sandwiches - sorry its blurry

    Righto.

Various pics taken on the journey

    the choo choo pulling backwards

    Lanes, Trains and Automobiles.......-choo-choo-jpg

you'll note its pulling in reverse, i didn't get round to asking why, however

    Lanes, Trains and Automobiles.......-102-jhvig5s-jpg

they do a footplate ticket where you can ride on the engine. Whilst leaning out taking pics it was then it dawned on my why they had the engine pulling backwards. Leaning out without glasses you get tiny lumps of soot and coal hitting your eyes so perhaps if you ride the footplate having the engine in that configuration means you don't spend 1 hour and 40 mins getting a face full of soot. Troy will probably know better though.

We got to Grosmont and they changed engines from the 825 to the bigger LMS. I mentioned volunteers, well we were waiting for the engine chang and not one of them said you could get out and walk around the plat form and take pics,. No info at all and i am going to Email them to suggest they provide a bit more narrative and guidance to help passengers get more out of the experience.

I noted a couple of people walked by that i knew were on the train so that was it, out and take pics.

    Ang on

The green carriage is a camping carriage, its in the middle of bloody nowhere so you are either really looking to get away from it all or you are steam nut.

When we got to Pickering it was the sons job to take the pics. One job he had, one and he fooked it up - no Pickering pics - he got fined an evenings beer for that, you still have to teach them even when they've left home.

Still we got off and then made a pilgrimage, can you guess to what, this will be easier for our UK viewer.

Katie, funny you should say that and Goathland station was indeed in the Harry Potter film, it was Hogsmade Station in the first film. - now you can watch it again.

We did indeed but sadly no pics due to "Pickering the lost hours". It is a lovely place and amazing the paintings have survived. But thats not the only reason for the visit. I'll update later or tomorrow.
