Swimming in the sea in the UK

We get occasional visits from seals along this beach. Still waiting to bump into one

When I was a kid I regularly swam in the sea along the Dorset and south Devon coast, but that would have been in August.

Currently in Isaan my swimming pool is 33 degrees, which is a bit warm, but when it goes below 23 degrees I find it uncomfortable. One thing I have noticed is how much difference just 1 degree in water temperature makes.

What sea temperature are you expecting August/September time. Or is October the warmest month... I believe that the sea temperature lags a couple of months behind the land temperature?

The only time the sea had felt warm to me was of the coast of West Wales in August.
Cornwall and the South Coast by comparison were freezing.
Must be something to do with the currents..

I've swum plenty of times in the sea in Dorset and it never felt cold to me. But I don't recall doing ever it in winter.

I used to swim in Cornwall almost every day, April - September mainly Crantock or Fistral beach close to Newquay as well as Beacon Cove. The sea was always freezing cold and Crantock beach was incredible dangerous due to rip tides from the Gannel. People drowned there every year, and probably still do...

I'm dreading the Summer and warm seas. In fact I've already starting looking for campsites in Scotland and Norway for the motorhome.

The sea is warm along the west coast of Scotland from the North Atlantic Drift. There are palm trees at Poolewe.

You should team up with Wim Hof - The Iceman - for a few hours relaxation in a freezer or something.

The water is now circa 9.5C. Toasty!

Swimming daily for over a month now. Up to 35 minutes a day. I'm still rarely putting my face in the water. It's too cold and I enjoy the view as I swim, up to 650 metres.

I feel I've lost weight, certainly more muscle tone and feeling generally a lot fitter. In fact I'm not looking forward to the Summer and the warm 17/18C that attracts the masses from London :-(

Great swim today. The tidal pool had warmed to a sweltering 12C. 1000 metres, circa 40 minutes.

Thanks - that's just off "The stacks" at Botany Bay, Kent. There's a chalk reef immediately behind us there, so this is as close as you go in that kind of swell.

Agree it's so embarrassing to be called numb nuts unless your nong is to "hand". I was a stoong sea swimmer for years but nearly died in a rip off Fingal Nelson's bay NSW trying to rescue 2 kids almost quit sea swimming tho used to a mile a day.Luckily no one drowned but it was hair raisinging close like my KL fire a plane crash in India, I can see it in slomo now.

Alas 18m sq pool is my choice today or with the giant Catfish of the murky Mekhong, They've installed millions of dollars yes$$$ of lamps solar , bike paths but no one single tap or shower to rinse, mind you only falangs bathe here , tho there are some lovely rock pools sand shoals and in Summer warm enough the fishermen think I'm daft but as my wife and you all know I am.

I'd literally shit myself if I swam near one of those giant catfish!

Having said that,ignorance is bliss on my part.
I once swam in waters near Cape Tribulation to cool off and whilst walking back up the road suitably refreshed I was perturbed to see a sign warning swimmers off due to crocodiles.

Love Cape Trib used to have a Canadian pa and swim at Cow Bay one of the nicest beaches in the world and the frisson of sea croc sighting gives it that Alderley Edge!!

Remember Friday is bath night try Hanley anything is possible.
