    UK road trip

Looking like a staycation this year in the UK, had plans for a European road trip last year and Thailand this year but all that's on hold at the moment.

Looking for suggestions for a UK road trip.

About 2-3 weeks, not staying in the same place for more than a few nights.

Gonna be a mega picture thread!
    Shalom

Are you planning on... motorhome, caravan tent or B&B/Hotel first off

Mostly hotels and campervanning, might try Norfolk for a start then gradually work our way around the coast line with a few days stopover in the capital .
    Nothings set in stone yet.

Trouble is with the COVID restrictions it'll mean high demand, stuff will get booked up quick and prices will be high this year.

Do the kids like doing active stuff?

this summer the country will be bursting at the seams with badly driven suv's, all filled with the kind of repulsive noisy dross that would normally be found in the pubs and beaches of spain and turkey.

my recommendation would be to hire a narrowboat and cruise the canals for a week or two.

no traffic jams, no dross, no crowds, your own space.

Skye, Arran and the West Coast of Scotland - where it's at.

Canal barges are often piloted by some of the biggest pissed up yobs in the country, btw.

The only difference is that at least you can remain at some distance from them most of the time.

I've just watched a recent vid of the YT channel Wee Broon Van (Scottish couple) and they said that most campsites are already fully booked.

@joe - good luck on your trip & hope this summer turns out to be better than last year's. Take pics!

^^^ i had a look at some of the canal boat holiday costs and even a week on a 2 berth is c£1800 upwards so two weeks on 4+ borth is going to be a chunk of change.

^ as katie says bet something booked now or you'll end up at Ourgate in a wooden wigam.

800 is not bad, about the same as a week in one of those awful back street b&b's with a couple of council funded homeless in the next room and run by a gimlet eyed old crone who charges for salt and pepper.

    have you considered

Good, I'm looking forward to that. I'd love to be travelling around the U.K. for a few months. If you're ever up around Bishop Auckland on the trip please take a lot of pics, it's my old ancestral home yet I've never been.

    Have fun.

I'd be making it historically based, with different kids doing research projects on the different historical sites, and go hardcore with only paper maps and lots of cursing and fighting rather than GPS. Something to remember. Still remember 2-3 months of touring Europe with my dad at 16, as does (according to my older sister) he.

Anyone else hate North Americans even more when they start doing that, or is it just me?

Sorry Edmond, I should have excused myself before doing that. My bad

It's not really a North American thing, more like a casual, "no big deal thing".

    But I do understand completely.

    Cheers

It'll take a few days to get back into the outdoor lifestyle after so long shut inside, but I'm sure they'll adapt well.

Not a bad idea, plenty of canal side pubs for liquid refreshments if it gets too hot.

Excellent suggestions, We've been giving Scotland much consideration. One of the most picturesque countries in the world. Pretty isolated, so could park up the campervan without site fees or disturbances.

The only thing deterring us is the infamous midgies, I saw a documentary on campervanners in Scotland recently who were wearing full face mossie nets for most of the day outside.

If it's as hot as last year, it'll be a winner.
Gonna post up about 5 pics a day over the 3 weeks all from different linteresting locations .
Its gonna be a trip of a lifetime.

    Good ideas Lulu.
My oldest in 16 now, so this will probably be our last big holiday together before they want their own space and to do their own things. Children grow up far too fast.

The UK is too small for sleeper carriages.

Got a few Motorhomes lined up to view the moment lockdown is over, might even get a trial taster week in at Easter , then a month in August.

That is a fact. One year when the kids were 16 a western state road trip to view 14 universities. The next year 17 and 10 months gone. Have not seen either in two years this June. One has not been home in 4 years, the other 2.5. Enjoy every moment. Is is lonely without kids.

    Joe,

You need to prvode some idea of budget, with prices going up and places getting booked fast as they are, even 2 weeks in a campsite in Skeggy is going to cost what 2 week break for a family of 4 in Antiqua would have cost pre-COVID.

Allegedly only island residents allowed. News story re a mainland Scottish couple, family and friends stay resulted in a court case.

Joe, me mum will put you guys up in Somerset, but please don't wank in my bed... I'm hoping to visit next Christmas.

How about an old battlefield tour? I'd love to do that... give the kids a great history lesson as well.

And why not take in the HMS Victory in Portsmouth, I'd love to do that as well.
