Chitty's Mountain mission to the top of Wales.

It's all about waiting for the weather at the moment and it appears there may be a window of opportunity for clear sky's this week on top of Wales.

The devil is in the detail, so a spot of planning is required.

Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa in Welsh) is the highest mountain in Wales and England. It's one of our most famous and regonizable landmarks and is well worth a visit. Standing tall over the village of Llanberis, Snowdon is a part of a close-knit family of jagged peaks and can offer views of Snowdonia, Anglesey, Pembrokeshire and Ireland.

I reckon this is the route we shall be taking..

Following the opening of the Llanberis pass in 1832, the Miners Path was built to carry copper from the Britannia Copper Works near Llyn Glaslyn to Pen y Pass, where it was then transported to Caernarfon. The mining came to an end in 1916, remains from the work can still be seen on the path to this day.

Distance: 8 miles (there and back)
    Total Climb: 723m (2,372 ft)
Time: Approx 6 hours (there and back)
    Start and Finish: Pen y Pass Car Park (SH 647 557 / LL55 4NY)

    Secrets of Snowdon

Here are some interesting secrets about Snowdon.

    • In 1639 came the first recorded ascent of Snowdon, by Thomas Johnson.
    • Morris Williams, a miner, was the first to sell refreshments at the summit in 1838.
    • Edmund Hillary trained on Snowdon before conquering Mount Everest.
    • You can find a rare flower on Snowdon, The Snowdon Lily. The lily can only be found in a handful of location across the world.
    • Snowdon is said to be the tomb of the giant Rhitta Gawr. Rhitta wore a cloak made of menís beard and was killed by the legend King Arthur.

The plan is to get a family picture with this summit picture as a backdrop.

Shall post up some more pics and a travel report later in the week when the mission is completed.

I don't think i'll have time for chatting up the locals, although expect a few sheep pics.

We are doing the whole mission in one day including travel time driving from Manchester, a 6 hour round trip.

So hopefully 12 hours in total baring twisted ankles and meltdowns.

Everyone's been bribed to join the mission, it's already an expensive day and i've not included the trip to Decathlon for walking boots etc.

    More planning...

    It's a one day mission!

Gonna have to take plenty of supplies because the cafe at the top is closed due to Covid.

A few bunches of bananas and chocolate bars should do the job.
As for drinks, I was hoping for a pint of Snowdons craft ale and a Welsh rarebit from the summit cafe.
Unfortunately we'll have to drink the mountain water from the numerous waterfalls.

What ever you do don't have a pint of Felinfoel, "feeling foul" in English but i imagine its not for sale in the Norf, hateful fukers the Norf Walians not even real Welsh IMO just a load Celts diluted by Scousers with a orrible accent like Syb.

Impressed and dying with envy here, but are you allowed to do such walks nowadays, what with social distancing still in force?

    Snowdon Mountain Railway 2020 Services
After careful consideration we have decided not to open the summit building ‘Hafod Eryri’ for the 2020 season. This decision is based on the difficult practicalities of trying to implement safe social distancing measures within the building.

We have also made the decision not to operate our Heritage Steam Service for 2020 and we will instead focus on our Traditional Diesel Service throughout the season. We have made significant internal adjustments to our carriages which enables safe segregation between compartments, social distancing within compartments and reduced passenger numbers.

The destination for the remaining 2020 season will be Clogwyn Station, which is ĺ distance to the summit of Snowdon. The journey time to Clogwyn is approximately 45 minutes and passengers have a 30-minute stop-over at this unsheltered station. Please be aware that there are no facilities at Clogwyn, or on-board the trains.

Think we'll give it a miss and climb it the hard way.

All about family memories, bonding and sense of accomplishment.

Cheers Mendip, I wouldn't want to risk being seated with a restricted view and next to a bag of Welsh crap with no leg room.

A few energy inducing supplies for the climb...

Chitty's Mountain mission to the top of Wales.-20200720_175855-jpg

The Naproxen is just a precaution for yours truly on account of my joints clicking for a week last time I climbed Snowdon 5 years ago in a total white out.

I fear half the battle will be motivating others rather than my own personal struggle.

I'm not sure but the boats I work on certainly do.

I'm pretty sure that mobile drilling rigs are treated as a vessel and as such have a master. I'd imagine they have a bow and stern, in which case also a port and starboard side.

    Yes, well near enough.

Need to keep everyones blood sugar levels up for the 6 hours accent and descent.

    The anxious anticipation is growing...

The rules of 5 mile travel in Wales were relaxed last week so all is good unless I get to close to a sheep

After a three hour drive the ominously looking Snowdon horseshoe came into view, amazingly all the peaks are visible including the prize.

Unfortunately the Miners trail car park was rammed so we made our way into the picturesque village of Llanberis to revise our plans.

Fortunately there are several different trails going towards the summit, we opted for the Llanberis path.

Llanberis path - 7.13Kms, if you eat all the sugar and only doing that distance you'll be coming down with Type 1 diabetes

The sugary snacks were a mistake, everyone craved savoury with much of the chatter about foods.
A couple of bananas each was all that was consumed with the promise of a curry in the local restaurant being the secondary goal.
The distance was 15km up and down with the descent being harder on the joints than accent.

A pic for the sheep lovers..
