Me too. I went as far as constructing a mini library in my house for the kids covering nearly every subject going.
If ever they want some info on a subject that I carn't give enough detail, i'll direct them to the book shelves.
A few hours later and they're still reading and about other subjects and info that they've found whilst browsing, things they wouldn't have ordinarily looked at.
With ebooks and Google you find your info and that's that.

    Even by your standards that's....

    ...oh, never mind.

But yeah, how could Dostoevsky ever compete with reading TD.

    For fuck's sake.

Paper books all the way for me unless I am on a long haul flight where the Kindle wins hands down. A very small secondhand bookshop opened in Diamond Plaza in Mandalay- an oasis. Very hard to find English books here

We also have a free library by the moat- quirky but mostly empty

If I have to read Burmese Days one more time...

Second hand bookshops are going to go the same way as Blockbuster video shops.

It would be more of a hobby than a business, but perhaps with a cafe attached it may tick over and become a focal point within the expat community.
You never know, you might unearth a few rare 1st editions from within the elderly expat community.
I sold a rare 1st edition several years ago for £27,000 at auction.
There was/is a bookshop in CM? Carn't remember its name..

Canterbury Tales in Pattaya seems to do OK.

Apparently vinyl record shops seem to be the next big thing for audiophiles.

Who would have said that 25 years ago.

anyone who has had to work with the public on a daily basis will understand the anger and frustration that this man feels, but if one wants to gain a good reputation, expand ones customer/client base and increase ones income, one had better be prepared to smile frequently, swallow ones pride and "butter ones parsnips" and be sure to butter the buggers well.

dealing with the increasingly ill mannered and aggressive public these days is annoying to say the least, what with the obesity, the yelling into the phones and the intrusions into ones personal space. even walking down a crowded street or joining a queue or negotiating an airport is a tortuous experience as one is forced into close proximity with the kind of people who under normal circumstances one would do everything in ones power to avoid and possibly wish dead.

i know this bookshop in hawes, i visit the town frequently and have spent time in his store, and although i have never been charged to enter, i have had to put up with his angry nagging as i browse. "be careful with those books, i'll charge you for any damage or torn pages"

hawes is a town for walkers and i suppose a shop full of wet and muddy booted timewasters warming themselves up or escaping the drizzle would be enough to tax the patience of any shopkeeper, let alone a yorkshireman, so i do have some pity for him.

there is a wonderful dairy in hawes that produces wensleydale cheeses. (the wensleydale creamery)

    http://www.wensleydale.co.uk/

one can wander round the shop there and gorge oneself on samples of their cheeses.

the wensleydale pantry on the main street in the town serves delicious comfort food in huge portions in an old fashioned tea room setting.
I can safely say that in all my years browsing in countless bookshops throughout the British isles I have never encountered a single incident when anyone acted in any manner other than the most genteel. As most of us know, a bookshop is redolent of a deserted church in its almost sepulchral silence as we ponder the tomes before us.

What Tax is failing to tell us is that the owner of this shop is in fact his half brother spawned by an injudicious liaison between his mother and a cross-eyed, whippet-rearing, hermit living in self-imposed exile on the lee of Scarscrackside Dale where the locals are noted for their unusual habit of gurnswiffling, a peculiar articulation whereby they communicate through clenched flabby buttocks.

obviously spoken by a publicly funded back office desk bound pencil shuffling drone who had little or no contact with the general public during his working life in the department for saddling up high horses.

Ahhh, if only that were true. Alas, I had no such sinecure but spent most of my working life firmly embedded in what passed for the weft and weave of British society including its somewhat distended underbelly.

Mind you, those chappies in the DExEU are certainly earning their corn and I doubt any of them have had a day off in the past six months. And they get paid a pittance for their pains too despite what that cvunt Hammond had to say on the subject.

Britain is a stupid place, with a very stupid, unsophisticated, conceited and ignorant population subsisting on an unending diet of ephemeral pap, alcohol and cheap consumerism.

The only thing concerning me now is the exchange rate and now that that is going to be consigned to the gutter I'm pretty well past caring.

Britain is now a repository for xenophobia, illiteracy, ignorance, stupidity and an increasingly poorly paid lower end that will continue to eat itself in a frenzy of spite and unrequited greed.

    Fuck 'em.

The days of cyber/IT/electronic, relating to stimulation and information, will be short lived. The fashions and cycles of practice will have worn out their welcome, crumbling before us.

Reverting to an aged old school, where independent thought and creative self-sufficiency are instinctive commonplace. Those whom have retained a passionate intolerant perception and cavernous conditioning for the dying cyber age will suffer the most, as the lack of natural depths and wisdom defines them.
