    Songkran in London

To Wat Buddhapadipa in Wimbledon to celebrate Songkran. The sky is blue, the air is warm, the light is clear, a perfect day. Entering the temple grounds is a surreal experience, leaving London suburbia for what, for all world looks and feels like Poy Luang in the mountains of Northern Thailand. Apologies for the resolution of my photos but the POS TD Gallery won't allow me to post at a decent resolution.

    Looks lovely.

    Certainly authentic looking.

Do they bring over temple architects etc from Thailand to build such things, or how does it work?

It was designed by an architect from the Fine Arts Department in Bangkok. It was originally a Thai Government/Royal Family project.

Calonne Road, about 10min walk from Wimbledon tube.

First few times we went as kids the temple wasn't even built and the small celebrations were confined to the house at the front and the garden out back.

The temple went up at the end of the garden slowly over about 3yrs and from the early 80s it just got bigger and bigger....more people were there each year, and it was the first time as kids we saw other kids that looked like us

    Great memories.

Dropped the mrs and kids off at this little celebration and went for a 10k run around Wimbledon common. Got back, ate some food, some thug shod in saffron splashed me with water, strolled the temple perimeter with the children.

Due to the heat that day, if you closed your eyes you could've well been in a village temple on the outskirts of Sakhon Nakhon. The smells, the sounds, indeed the sights - I sighed a lot. It was just like Thailand but with an incongruous smattering of oak and elm.

It's a lovely place. I know the guy that helped paint it, Manoon who lives in Staines/Nakon Phanom. Lovely guy who also used to work in several restaurants.

I had a great time with him back in the late nineties, preparing food at the back of his stall at a Thai festival in Battersea. A few people thought I was a well known chef and his sales took off big time...
